I am looking for a great business idea that needs a cash infusion to get going.
I have about 100k I am looking to invest in someone's small business to help them go to the next level.
This money is essentially spare from our budget and I can do whatever I want with it, and I want to invest it wisely and make some profit, but I also want to be involved in helping someone else too. Everyone wins kind of situation:celebrate:.
I am a SAHM but I would like to be involved on some level in a business venture.. at first I thought an awesome kid friendly cafe/restaurant but now I'm not sure how much I could help with that from home and its not a unique idea - and 100k isnt enough to start up in Sydney I don't think..
So where do I start? Should I buy an established business and invest or should I just wait till I hear a great, unique idea and throw some money in that direction?
I want to be part of an awesome project, I am great at planning and I think I could help build a business - I just dont have any direction yet!
Thoughts welcome :goodvibes:

I have an online business (but am not looking for investment) but am thinking maybe that could be something for you to look at? You could do that yourself. However, I understand that anything worth $100K is probably a fulltimei sort of caper so might not be practicable.

You should decide firstly what sort of return your are looking for and also how much risk you are willing to take.
If investing in a new product or service the risk would be quite high as the chance of a business failing in the first year is 80%. However if successful your return would be excellent.
Where as an established business needing a boost for growth is lower risk however the the owner would probably not be willing to give as much profit.

Thank you for the replies, especially that link. I didn't know such a website existed!
In terms of risk, I think I'd be comfortable with high risk/high reward because it is spare money, and I like the idea of being on the ground floor of something helping build it up..

High Risk/High Reward pretty much screams IT startup to me. There are plenty of really smart tech nerds around the place with brilliant ideas but no capital.
The cafe type business is really high risk/low reward in most cases. Even when they are successful, they don't really offer a very good return - but they fail regularly and take pretty much every penny down with it.
If you really wanted to have fun with it, maybe you could skim a few grand out of it and run a few newspaper or radio ads soliciting proposals. If you speak to the right people, I'm sure you'd be able to get a fair bit of free exposure out of it also - talkback radio and even those crappy morning shows would eat up a "kind mother wanting to use her money to help get someone else started" type of story. I'd bet that you'd get a bunch of proposals come in that you might not have thought of - and you might just find one that really intrigues you.

Thanks for your post DL,, I agree re the IT start up and from the proposals I've read so far there are a lot of IT proposals, but tons of other ideas too..
You're probably right about the cafe - bit of an emotional pull to that idea but so overdone, esp in Sydney.
My bosses are looking to consolidate at the moment..... They have a very successful cafe north of Melbourne though so it wouldnt be high risk/ high reward though. They are looking to sell in the next 5 years though and are looking to cash in on the very good name they have for themselves and try to sell to well known hospitality head.... They need to revamp the kitchen and a few bits and pieces and we are currently focusing on branding and promotion. They have been open for 9 years, though they are only open weekends and fridays.
It would be a sure return in 5 years but not a great return unless you were to become a silent partner and get some of the cream if their plan to sell works.... Think Colambaris in the Country.....
Good luck with what ever you do though :goodvibes:
I just wanted to say Good luck. I hope things go well for you.
I had a lightbulb moment driving to the shops today! But don't know where to begin as I've not studied business. I don't know if I want to say, in case someone steals it :o or if people will think it's stupid

Feel free to PM me if you like. I'm not going to be starting any businesses anytime soon - my hands are full enough with the one I already have.

Is that meant for me or OP?
