Hi there,
I'm just on the phone with a friend whose bub (7 weeks old) was up feeding every hour last night and today and just won't settle. She's had lots of nipple pain so is finding it REALLY hard to keep up at the moment and is feeling quite desperate. anytime she has given bub formula (to give her a break when she hasn't been able to express enough) he projectile vomits about half an hour later so that's not really an option. Any suggestions???

My baby is 9 weeks old and he projectiles an vomitted 3 times during a feed maybe he has reflux. We are now on Zantac 2 mls a day and thickened S26 formula. He is a lot better now and sleeps better and is not so whingey.
The Paed will ask if the baby is losing weight as sometimes if they are not keeping the food down they will lose weight.
GO to a Paed and they will assess the baby. i gave up breast feeding at weeks as wan't making enough and had bad cracked nipples. He drinks so much more now he is ont he bottle.
Good luck

thanks for the replies so far. He doesn't seem to vomit after a breastfeed so it must be something to do with the formula. the dr doesn't want to label bubs lactose intolerent until they test for it, which I think is a good idea. It's just that she doesn't know what to do in the meantime. Bubs is putting on weight well so must be keeping enough down.
Keep the replies coming!!
hi lilmac. how worrying for your friend.
first thing is to get the positioning and attachment checked to help alleviate the sore nipples, some people find creams help healing or just the hindmilk and lots of air drying. panadol or some gentle pain reliever could help too if she is getting desperate.
there is a great page on the aba site about lactose intolerance true lactose intolerance is rare. i would find it but i'm lazy atm, and just about to go to bed:o .
it could be that bubs is sensitive to cows milk protein. formula can sometimes aggravate this and then bubs can have trouble even with breastmilk as the gut wall becomes damaged. your friend could talk with someone about changing her diet maybe cutting out dairy and seeing if there is a change but it can take about 2 wks to see a difference.
bubs is in the age group where growth spurts/ fussy days are pretty common, frequent feeding can be a normal thing for a coupla days and then may settle down. getting the attachment happenning so mum is not in so much pain would be key.
having any medical problems ruled out would be good.
the ABA has a phone helpline numba that is great for reassurance and suggestions and could help her through this aswell. (not that you aren't doing an awesome job at that too:D )
