mixing breast milk with formula.

Hi I was wondering if one can mix a bit of forula into brest milk. I have heard of pple adding farex baby cereal into their babies milk to fill them up.

I would only consider adding some formula into brestmilk if baby was not gaining weight properly.

There are lots of ways a mum can increase her supply if she feels bub isn't getting enough breastmilk. If additional feeds of formula are truly required, it should be given after a breastfeed.

Laksa is right. I was having to comp feed with formula and the LC told me not to mix EBM and formula together as it may change the properties of the EBM and therefore the goodness.

Some may be wary, but according to the Special care Nursery where our Bubs was, mixing formula with EBM is fine (it will 'change' the EBM as now it's got formula with (!!), but will not affect the goodness of the BM), but this may depend upon the brand of formula. There are formulas specifically made for extra-hungry bubs, can't remember the brand, but one is called 'Sweet dreams' (it may be 'Novalac' brand). Naturally, upping your supply or encouraging longer feeds is the optimal thing. Adding farex may block the teat, and it's not encouraged for feeding to bubs under 4mo. Have heard of this, though.

If you don't want potential wastage or are wary, BF then top-up with formula. If supply is an issue, Fenugreek, Herbal BM supplements for Mum, or as a last resort, Motilium tablets may do the trick. The latter should increase supply by up to double within 36hrs. Hope you find a solution that works for you.:)
