I got a call today that my result was 8 and the limit is 7.7 so "just slightly over". Not sure what the numbers mean, I see people talking about limits of around 5... I hope they are different types of numbers!..

That was the one hour test, I was told not to fast prior, but it was a pretty early start so I hadn't eaten breakfast (so effectively had fasted) so would that have made my results higher? Or would no breakfast have made them lower, and I actually should have failed by a bigger margain if I'd eaten as directed? Yes I am COMPLETELY clueless about how it works, really can't get my head around it

I really really want my next result to be good, I have pretty much been LIVING on sugar this pregnancy so if I start being good...

I'm doing the 2 hour test on Monday morning with the overnight fast prior. I've seen a lot of mentions about 'carb loading' being recommended/compulsary prior, but I have just been told to eat normally.

I had been thinking I should eat super healthy and avoid carbs and sugars for the next four days til the test in order to get good results, but then (my cluelessness again) does that make my body unused to sugar and spike MORE with the drink or something  And now that I've read that lots of people are told to eat MORE carbs prior, well I'm really confused lol.

Help!!???? :helpme: pleeease x

For my first pregnancy, my 1 hr GD screening result was high, so I did the high carb diet and the 2hr test result was fine. My 2nd pregnancy I did the high carb diet and 2hr test straight up, results were fine.
3rd pregnancy, high results on the 1hr screening, then high carb diet and the 2hr results were fine.
So I would recommend you try and eat regular carbs for a few days prior if possible. Toast/ cereal for breakfast, potato/ rice for both other main meals and a couple of biscuits/ a scone for both morning and afternoon tea.
I don't believe that eating lots of sugar will cause you to get GD, but only that it's a problem if you have GD, if that makes sense. I have fasted overnight for all 3 of my 2hr GTT's.
Good luck.

Essentially fasting for your 1 hour test quite possibly means you may have spiked higher had you not fasted.

I would eat as you normally would leading up to the test on Monday. I don't think you can actually cheat the test though iykwim?

Good luck!!! ... Having GD was quite possibly the best thing that happened to me as strange as that sounds. It taught me so much about food and nutrition and have continued a low GI diet after bubs was born (and my body is thanking me for it!!)

**I was diagnosed GD requiring insulin at 20 weeks for my pregnancy, bubs was born with no complications, normal sugar levels. I was induced at 39+3 as my sugar levels were erratic**

Thanks for your replies :) I'm not sure why I have such a mental block about understanding how it works... I think I'm going to blame baby brain ;) Ok so sounds like either way, I should at least not try and cheat by cutting out a normal amount of carbs. Well that's nice and easy then ;)
It's great that there has been a positive spin on it for you cupidsvictim! I will try and remember that upside if the results don't go my way, thanks :goodvibes:

Definitely try and stay positive if the results aren't what you had hoped for. I was on a controlled diet when i was first diagnosed. No sugar AT all, started eating breakfast, i did everything the letter! My sugars didn't stabilize and was absolutely gutted to find out i had to be put on insulin!

The only way i managed to cope with it was by looking at the upside of it all :) (especially when my DH has a family history of type 1 diabetes)

Good luck with it all!!! Many women i know have failed the first test and breezed though the second :)

I have diabetes and an ideal number is less than 7. I should be between 4-5.5 after fasting but many things contribute to it being high (doesnt necessarily mean gestational diabetes). Just eat a normal meal the night before and dont stress. If it does come back positive for gestational diabetes it really isnt the end of the world. Good luck xx
