help all
DS has constantly infected ears (middle ear). every time he gets a cold or a blocked nose his ears get infected. the doctor says that this is quite normal for some children, but when do i say enough is enough?? there is only so much antibiotics can do and it isn't helping. and getting constant ear infections leads to a runny nose which leads to more infections.... the cycle just goes on....................
so i was reading about grommets that they put in babies ears to help drain the fluid out so they don't get infected all the time....
has anyone had this done with their littlie or know of anyone who has done it??
i can't stand knowing that DS is pain alot and that his hearing might be permanently affected by constant ear infections.
is it really a viable option??????????????????
any advice would be welcome....
thanks ladies

I had grommets when I was younger because I also had what seemed to be almost constant middle ear infections! I still get them today actually, but only say one or two a year which is much less than it used to be. So personally I think it would definately be worth it, but after the operation you have to keep the inside of your ears dry which i remember as a child wasnt much fun :( everyone would go and jump in the pool and id have to wait for mum to put in my ear plugs and a cap on. I guess thats a small price considering I can hear perfectly well now and only get one or two a year!
My DS1 constantly had fluid in his ears last year and was constantly on antibiotics, but for only short periods each time. Finally I went and saw a Ears, Throat and Nose specialists. He was great, he said firstly lets try and put him on a different antibiotic for a longer period of time, and with the warmer weather it should improve - which it did! The specialist was really good with DS1 and I was happy that in the end we didn't have to worry about grommets. He is located in Marinda, I think I have his card somewhere if you want his details.

my ds is on the waiting list for grommets. he has never passed a hearing test and each test just shows how his hearing is getting worse :( he has only ever had 2 ear infections.
if you are worried i would ask for a referal to the audioligst to do a hearing test to see if the infections are having a negative affect on his hearing and stuff coz if they are the audioligist will tell you if they think your DS needs grommets or another treatment :)

My DS has had ear infections for months now and before that he always had a runny nose and pull his ears but we just didnt know what was happening.
He is now on a waiting list for surgery to have gromets installed. Have to admit when we went to the specialist i was upset. DS is only 13 mths and the thought of him being put through surgery still terrifies me.
I was just wondering if anybody knew of a bub who has had the gromets put in and if they were in pain etc afterwoods or any other general advice.
THanks in advance,
Belinda

My son was 3 (nearly 4) when he had grommets, tonsils and adnoids out. Wow, he has thrived since then. He had shocking hearing because of **** in his ears - his tonsils were nearly touching and he snored like there's no tomorrow. I know he's a bit older but he's been terrific since then. The daughter of a lady in my mother's group had grommets at 15 months and she was fine. It can be a bit stressful when you know they have to have a general anaesthetic at such a young age. Your specialist will be able to reassure you and let you know what to do.
