View Full Version : Poor Attachement causing wind

'My DD is now 9 weeks old and whilst she is growing very well and a generally happy baby, she is very lazy when she feeds and takes in a lot of air causing quite a few wind problems.

I'm quite large and she doesn't open her mouth enough so that she takes enough nipple etc. She makes a clicking noise often when feeding. I've tried to take her off and reposition and start again, but even when I get her to take the right amount she just 'spits out'what she doesn't want in her mouth and continues on her way (or at other times she has a gag reflex and will throw up).

Do you have any tips on how to encourage her to take more in her mouth. We are often having to burp still an hour after a feed because she is in pain and also wakes her up if she hasn't burped properly before falling asleep.

Hi TLCC

You are correct - the 'clicking' as baby feeds indicates that she is
probably not attached well- it would be wise to get a lactation consultant
to watch feeding and offer tips- the problem may be due to baby's mouth and
/ or jaw physiology - eg tongue tie, a short tongue ,a high palate or low
muscle tone. These situations can all be addressed with the right skills.

One trick with large breasts is to support your breast on a rolled up towel
and support your breast and baby's chin with your hand as baby feeds. Trying
different feeding holds may help too- eg a football hold - but getting a
lactation consultant in would be well worthwhile to help you and bub feel
more settled in a very short time.
