Hey girls and guys. I'm a bit upset right now as my boy has suddenly taken a turn.
Cobey's normally the perfect bub, he sleeps through, self settles with no dramas, smiles, talks, never cries etc.

He's just had his 11 week Birthday.

Last week he got croup, then a cold.. poor bub. He's now got a snotty nose and a lingering cough from his cold, but it's nothing major.

Yesterday at about 5.15 he started crying for "no reason" he was quiet so long as he was held upright, and eventually stopped and we were able to put him down at around 7.00ish (he wasn't crying the WHOLE TIME but he was crying when we'd put him down.. he even cried through a BATH!!) he sounded like he was in pain, I hadn't heard this cry before.

He slept until 2am, woke up, again he was upset, I fed him, changed him and after trying in 3 different beds we co-slept as he would drop to sleep IMMEDIATELY when put down in my bed. No dramas there.

He woke up at 7, again was cranky... but soon smiled, fed, slept, fed, slept.. woke up around 9.30, smiled and talked to me.. fed, cried, slept for 2 hours :(

Just now he's woken up, cried, fed, slept, cried, fed, slept and he's now sleeping.. but not before being asleep for 5 minutes, crying until I picked him up, then settling to sleep.

I don't know what's wrong :( He feels hot but doesn't have a temp, he's not wearing much at all because of that.
It makes me really sad because I don't like seeing him like that and he's been such a happy baby up until he got sick. I don't want him to be unhappy. :crying:

He's been burping, farting and pooing.. although sometimes he'll cry and pull his legs up until he farts. He never used to have a problem with wind.

Sorry for the epic, but I really just don't know what to do. Short of taking him back to the doctor.
Can someone help out? or tell me it's normal? I'm thinking of calling the child health line and telling them all my issues to see what they say.

Have you been eating cabbage or anything that you don't normally eat?

Nikki, I could have written this post myself a few weeks ago. I woke up one day and thought "What happened to my quiet little boy?". He went off his food, he cried a lot (actually, it was more screaming than crying). I even posted here about his crying sprees! It eventually just passed on its own. He's now my dear little boy again!
When they're recovering from an illness, they can get pretty cranky. My DS refused the bottle during his sniffles, and I had to feed him every hour and a half to two hours. This meant he was getting little sleep (as was I!), and was snacking. It took me a few weeks to drag him out to three hourly feeds, but he's there now.
:hugs: Call the CHN - she'll reassure you. I took my DS to the doctor's two times, and he just kept saying "He's a healthy boy. He's just cranky at the moment", which is VERY frustrating to hear when you're not sleeping and your baby is crying all the time.
Also, it sounds like you've been blessed with a good baby (just like me), so we get used to great behaviour. When our babies start acting like normal babies, it seems like they're terrible! I was out recently with a friend, and her baby is two days older than mine. He screamed the entire time, and when my DS went to sleep after a feed, she said "Oh God, do they really do that? I didn't know babies could fall asleep without rocking, singing or screaming!"
:hugs: to little Cobes. He's probably going through a growth spurt or is just in a bad mood!

Nope, but I've been told that the foods that you eat don't affect the breastmilk anyway. I was told not to buy into that "mother guilt" :(

But yeah, I havn't had anything out of the ordinary....

With a grotty nose and not wanting to be put down, I'd be suspicious of an earache. Changing postion might make it worse, hence the not wanting to be put down.

I think I'd go back to the doctor and have them check.

My very placid little man was out of sorts for no apparent reason apart from a grotty nose, felt hot without a temperature, and it turned out to be a middle ear infection.

thank you hazel and aardvark. I just called the doc and cried on the phone because they had no appts (sleep deprivation much?) so they're fitting me in at 3.30.

:fingerscrossed: he's all ok

Aahhh, the power of the crying mother!! Good luck Nikki :fingerscrossed: - I'm sure it's just a stage. You'll soon have your placid little fella back!

I was gonna suggest a possible ear infection too. Both my bubs hate laying down when they have one, and DD has had 3 in the last 3mths. If it's not an ear infection then it might just be all the stuff in his nose running back when he lays down, that can make their ears hurt, and of course make it hard to breath etc.

Hope it's nothing serious and you have your happy boy back soon :hugs:

As others have said, it could be his ear - or he could be teething. I know some bubs start the teething process early and it could be months before the tooth even comes through. My aunt is a CHN and she said that if they cross cut when teething it can really hurt them - and that they hate lying down because for some reason cross sutting can cause them to have sore ears, (but not an infection), and lying down makes it worse.
Also - at about 12 weeks, I think bubs generally tend to have a pretty major growth spurt. My best friend warned me about this - she told me that around 12 weeks, their routine will go out the window overnight. Lo and Behold, two nights later this happened!!
Maybe try some baby panadol as I think 11 weeks is too young for bonjella and if it is teething, this may help. (If you feel comfortable using baby panadol of course)
Good luck with the doctor! I hope Cobey feels better soon - it's the worst thing when they are sick and you don't know what is wrong. It breaks your heart doesn't it??

Does anyone ever feel like a raving hypochondriac... or an over paranoid mother when it comes to going to the doctor?

Thank you for the :fingerscrossed:s and advice... and help... Cobey's sleeping soundly, has been for the last hour at least... I also worry when he sleeps as much as he is!

Oh Nikki - you sound so like me! Is he sleeping too much,? Is he sleeping enough? Is he eating too much, Is he eating enough and so on and so on.... LOL!!! And yes, I used to feel silly taking Owen to the doctor until I found a fabulous doctor who has not once ever made me feel like a paranoid mother! He just nods and asks if I have any more questions/concerns, checks Owen over and more often then not, it is just a cold, or he has been teething or something. But this doctor has always made me feel 'better safe then sorry'.

Oh thats great you got a conclusive diagnosis.
It's worse when bubs is really upset and out of the ordinary and the docs can't find anything wrong, makes you think maybe it's something really serious then, or maybe I am just raving hypochondriac  !!
I hope the meds kick in quickly and your little man gets back to his cheery self.
My boy had a virus last week and although he is recovering well, is crankier than ever *sigh* can't wait for him to go back to hs usual self too!!

Yeah, I was told early on that lots of things are old wives tails... I still chow down on garlic, cabbage, chocolate and coke :D

Also, thank you everyone for the :fingerscrossed:s and all the rest. I was feeling quite frantic right there because he sounded so hurt... I feel 100 x better now that I've been to the doc and all the rest. :)

Just wanted to say that while some babies aren't affected by what you eat others are. I still can not eat thai (unless it's sweet and sour) without DD being up all night long. I can guarantee it, every time. Muesli has the same effect. DD had eczema on her face from a couple weeks old. I recently discovered she's allergic to dairy. I cut out dairy from my diet and the eczema cleared up straight away.

I'm not saying don't eat certain foods, I did but then I learnt that some things DID affect DD, even though I was told they didn't, and one meal isn't worth 24-48 hours of zero sleep!

Good thing you took Cobey to the doctor's Seekrit! I've been so much lately the receptionist asked if I'd like a pillow and I could just sleep there!
