Hey there,

have just found out I'm pregnant with no. 2 sooner than we had planned and am not going to be covered by private health insurance when bubs is due. Therefore, it's back to a public hospital like the first time where I had a pretty bad experience (Westmead!!). The only other public hospital close to where we live (hills district) is Auburn. Has anyone ever given birth there and if so, what was your experience? I've heard both good and bad. Any other suggestions for hospitals within the western suburbs of sydney would be appreciated.

Thx girls!!

Hi there,

I also had a terrible experience at westmead! Have you tried Blacktown> I have heard noting but good things about them and when we fall pregnant we're going to look into it. I am pretty sure all hospitals do a tour of the maternity section maybe it's worth looking into it?

I came here wondering that as well. I've only had bad experiences with Westmead so far (although that was with their A&E and their pre-op ward) and was a little relieved when I found out that they couldn't fit me in at Westmead.

From what I've been reading, and I may be wrong here, they seem a lot more focused on a more natural birth rather than resorting to a cesarean as soon as things look a little difficult.

My first appointment is on November the 2nd, I'll let you know how it goes.

Have you considered Fairfield Hospital???
Had bubs there oct 2005 and had a wonderful experience with first bubs. Nice midwives, staff etc. Considering next bubs next year and would not hesitate in having bubs at Fairfield!!!!:smiliedance:

Would be interested in hearing how your appt. goes Neurofern.

At this stage, I'm heading off to Westmead again much to my disappointment. When I said this to my GP who was writing my referral letter, and after I explained to her what happened with my first birth, she thought that the 'limited' amount of care I received after an emergency ceasar was due to the fact that I had been seeing an obstetrician throughout my pregnancy, and not going to the clinic with the midwives. I think she was trying to say that they had thier noses out of joint as I came in as a private patient and spent more time with those women who had been their from the start!

My girlfriend had three births at Auburn and praises it 100%.....then I have another friend who they misdiagnosed during her pregnancy and she heamorraged (sp?) and had to have a historectomy after giving birth! Decisions, decisions......

I'm not sure if anyone is still watching this thread, but I figure it may help anyone searching around for Auburn information in the future :)

My first appointment (although I was actually at 23 weeks - that's a really long story!) was great. I had such a horrible experience at Westmead when I went there for an emergency a few weeks ago and Auburn was completely different. The staff were friendly, took the time to listen to me instead of just brushing me off and saying that as it was my first pregnancy I didn't know anything - whereas when I went into Westmead the antenatal nurse told me that the pain I was in was just backache from the weight of the baby and I should "stop complaining", a few hours later I was diagnosed with a severe kidney infection.

Everyone I spoke to, the woman who took my details, the midwife and the lovely nurse who walked me to the otherside of the hospital when I asked for directions, they were all so friendly and the general atmosphere seemed really great. They gave me loads of information, made me aware of most of the options, and seemed really enthusiastic when I said I planned on breastfeeding and when I spoke about the antenatal classes.

I know that I won't really know until I do give birth there, but my experience so far has been really positive :)

Hi, I'm in the Hills too and refused to go to Westmead, heard too many horror stories. Ended up at RHW at Randwick with this bub back in July 06.

Have heard great things about Blacktown and Hornsby is great even though it is old. Great to hear Auburn is good. Would never ever recommend Liverpool, the obstetrician there almost killed our first and left him permanently disabled.

just came across this thread again

oh no theycallmemum! That is terrible! Youd think that the 'bigger' hospitals would be better equiped and consequently take better care of you. It is such a shame that they dont.
