Hi All,

I have been implementing a mix of the NCSS, SOS, Babybliss and hands on settling over the last five days and im not sure if its working and if i should continue or give in? BTW - DS is 9 weeks old.

This is what i have been doing:
Day time-
When i see tired signs, check nappy, wrap, sit in rocking chair in DS room, sing 2 songs, put DS down calm, sleepy but awake in his cot. He is on a baby wedge for his reflux and nice and cosy in sleep positioner. If he whinges when i put him down, i shhhh him and pat him until he calms. At this time he often settled and goes to sleep pretty fast, but only for 10-20 minutes. When he wakes, if he is not hysterical, i shhh and pat until he sleeps again. If he is hysterical, i pick him up and sit back in the rocking chair until calm and put him down again.

The thing is, to get his 2-3 hour nap it in 20 minute blocks so takes hours and i feel like im spending the whole day resettling him and he is getting very overtired.

A few times when i have done this 4-5 times in a nap, i will pick him up and he will fall asleep instantly in my arms and i will hold him to ensure he gets a bit of continuous sleep. If i put him back down asleep he wakes again in 10 or so minutes. I have tried getting him up when he wakes up, and to feed and play to try again when he shows the next tired sign, but he is exhausted and falls asleep on the boob or on me so is obviously still tired. If i hold him he will sleep for 2-3hours in a row no worries.

Night-
We have a bath, feed, wrap, sing his songs and put him to sleep in my bed on his babywedge. If he is unsettled i pat and shhh.. he often sleeps for 4-5 hour blocks at night (it was 2 hour blocks before i started 5 days ago) and does really well. For night feeds, he goes back to sleep after no worries and doesnt protest.

I guess that im wondering if im doing the right thing continuing with this or if its unhelpful to have DS in bed with us at night but in a cot during the day, should he be in the one place? Is 5 days enough to see if this is working or should in continue? Anything else you suggest i could do to keep him more settled during the day?

His night sleeps are so good now, im worried if i move him to the cot for those no one will sleep....

Hi,

Pantley says it can take a long time to see results - after 5 days you have already seen changes at night. I think she recommends you keep a log and look at your progress every 10 days, so 5 days is a very short time to expect results :) It is more like a 60 day plan than a 2 week plan.

I think sleeping alone in day and co-sleeping at night should be fine.

Also count the hours of 'nap' as the time you first put him down to when you get him up from the nap - so don't worry about keeping going after 2 hours at this stage! And to give yourself a break at this stage why don't you let him have one of his naps in sling so you can be out and about and enjoy your day a bit more?

Things do change!

at 9 weeks my DD lived in a sling and slept/ate when she wanted.
I think she had 20-40 minute naps? I know that she was 1 before she actually had long day sleep (and only the one sleep)
at such a little age I wouldnt be worried about any routine, just watch for signs and follow bubs lead
