Considering we are all pretty novice at sewing do you want to just make any type of nappy? That might be easiest (and that way you sew a nappy that more suits your bub);)

I just inspected a fleece Sandras Stuffable and then looked them up to see what the waterproof stuff in it was and its apparently taslon.

I want to put that in my fleece pocket. Does anyone know where I can buy it?

What patterns do you guys use? I'm about to start making my own nappies, and I've downloaded three free patterns, but wondering if it worth buying a pattern?

I like the look of the honey boys, and thier pattern looks like it has a wide range of types.

Or did you make up your own?

I'd love to know your opinions on the best patterns.

I only have a sewing machine, not overlocker

I'm using Tea Lady's pattern & I dont have an overlocker either. I'll just use zig zag stitch.

shed
08-10-2006, 11:16
I am also using Tea Ladys pattern. You don't need an overlocker for it.

You probably don't need to buy a pattern. Just get a piece of newspaper and one of your existing nappies and stretch it out and trace around it. You could probably even do this with a disposable actually.

Or just get Tea Lady's pattern or download one from one of the nappy sites. Once you have made a couple you will have found your own particular preference.

Did we have a date to finish these by? How long have we got?

I've got my sewing machine.. I've got my overlocker and I've got my PUL fabric for making pocket nappys.

Just waiting on my Micorfleece and suedecloth for thelining and then I can start. This could take anothe couple of months though as I ordered it from a yahoo usergroup and they take MONTHS!! (wont be doing that again).

Poshbecks, either swimsuit elastic or lastin ( a rubber transparent looking elastic. Doesn't split, very stretchy and bounces back to size.

I still have to wait for my mmicrosuede to arrive before i can start mine!

Monday23rd Oct....okay after the Expo wekend.
How long should it take a beginner to sew a pocket?
If I ge organised on Tuesday I think I can do it this week.

Oscar's mum
12-10-2006, 11:55
How long should it take a beginner to sew a pocket?

If you just get some material to use as the lining of the nappy cut out to the same shape as the PUL.

You will also need elastic from memory perhaps 90cm should be stacks

so 12cms (approx) for each side of the legs and 10 for the top of the pocket attached to the PUL) and 10 for the top of the pocket (attached to the lining).

4cm thick hook and loop velcro -

34cms of Loop and 8 cm of hook.

If you cut the hook into 4cm squares and the loop will need to be cut into approx 3 4cm squares the rest used on the front of the nappy.

Once you have all of that cut out to size (approx measurements), sew on the front panel of the loop velcro onto the PUL. Next with the picture side of the PUL and the right side of the lining face them together then sew right around the edges of the whole nappy (except the tab you fold down to make the pocket.

Next you want to sew in the elastic start with the tab part of the pocket stitch a very small part of the elastic to the lining (enough to keep it actually attached to the material) then stretch to twice the length you want it to be so in other words you want to stretch that 10cm piece of elastic out to 20cms when you reach the 20cm mark stitch the elastic to the lining. Next fold down the tab and sew that down so the lining is all looking pretty now;) Repeat the process with the PUL side of the pocket. Just a note I don't actually stitch the elastic completely down in the opening of the pocket just the start and end I like to let it just be free (if that makes sense)

Now for the elastic on the legs of the nappy you want to sew the elastic onto the lining side of the nappy (remeber you havn't actually turned your nappy the right way out yet - it is still inside out! Once again you need to stretch this elastic to twice its length. With the legs you will need to stitch the whole piece of elastic down. Repeat so that you have done both sides of the legs.

Once you have done this turn your nappy right way around and you can begin to sew the velcro;) Pin the hook and loop squares onto the nappy. The hook part will be closest to the seam. On one of the arms on the outer (so on the PUL) you will put a piece of loop so you can adjust the nappy for a really small waist. Line this piece up with the hook underneath and you can sew the hook and loop at the same time and not have extra stitch marks.

And now you should be finished:smiliedance:

So I would give yourself maybe 20mins to cut out the fabric etc and another 25 to sew it together! You may find that you are quicker than that - but it won't take you long at all;)

When you do home made pocket nappies do you usually just have a layer of PUL on the back, and a layer for lining?

Is that really enough?

I get that you then stuff them with soakers, but PUL just seems so thin.

Also which fabric would be best for a lining?

Hemp Fleece
Hemp French Terry
Cotton French Terry
Sherpa
Microfleece
Suedecloth

I'm waiting for a yard of each of these, which one would you use?

Hemp Fleece
Hemp French Terry

Are fine as stuffers, i usually cut and overlock these to pieces about 30cm by 30cm for stuffers.
Hemp and bamboo and microfibre are the most absorbent materials!

Sherpa
Microfleece
Suedecloth
Are fine as liners :)

And yes one layer of pul, and one layer for the liner is pleanty. :D

I have made two with my new PUL and one is perfect (sort of, LOL) and one is stuffed.

Stuffed as in 'ruined', not stuffed as in 'got hemp in it', unfortunately.

The first one turned out good and the second one went awry somehow.

I prefer fleece rather than the suedecloth as the inner. Its just personal preference really HoopDeeDo.

Its very distracting!!!

I am currently on my third piece of PUL. We have one good nappy and one bad one so far. I am using suedecloth for this one.

I actually prefer the fleece one I made, its one of my favourites. I found some taslon too, from Spotlight and have lined it and its a brilliant night nappy, no leaks whatsoever, so that might be the one I enter into the sew off.

me and my bundle of op shop flanalette and a bit of ole left over polar fleece are nothing compared to you guys! but i did make 3 nappies yesterday and they are working allright for me.

i haven't worked out pokets coz it seems a bit of a waste not having good hemp fabric for boosting. but i have just been making aio's using the fleece as the outer layer, witdh flannalette and micro fibre cloths.

seeing as i thought cloth would save me money, it's hard to justify spending so much on it, but i know i'm not alone with that concern:rolleyes:

i will put one of my nappies on the thread, i don't think i can make one especially for it, i'll just have to choose one i've already done, i am not going to buy any more fabric until i've got through what i've got here. although i would love to have a go with pul and stuff i woudl be so worried about stuffing it up.

Hey, Meme. I love my op shop nappies and revamped woollen jumpers into soakers! In fact the nappy I have put up hereis only the second nappy I have made. I have made 3 or 4 cover's and cut up and resewed some jumpers but I fly completely by the seat of my pants. I'm not too good with patterns and make up quite a bit as I go although I used TL's pattern for this nappy and found it easier than I thought it would be. I do love being thrifty with 2nd hand stuff-there are no rules and I can make things how I want. :D

I bought the silver PUL on Ebay. there was 4 lots of silver and some gold as well but I decided the silver was 'lush' enough-the gold may have made him look like a gangster!

As to washing? I haven't yet. I put it on him for the photo's, then it was bath and bedtime and I haven't had the chance for him to show it off again. It's a bit like PUL in reverse-the silver is kind of tacky/rubbery like the usual inside of other PUL.

Kymmy - check your tension on your machine - if it's too tight for what you are sewing it can snap your needles.

If you get really stuck it might be time for a service (that always fixes mine ) :)

Ahhh you are all probably right. The poor thing is quite old. I haven't actually sewd anything yet. Just trying to set it up so i can. great effort on the nappies girls.. very ingenious creation Shed.

Quick questions...

1. where is everyone getting their suedecloth and microfleece from? Are you using Malden mills fleece?

I've ordered mine from yahoo usergroups.. cheaper buut takes about 4 months from order to receiving it.

2. If you have a pattern on your PUL and it means that either the front or the back of the nappy will have the print upside down, do you opt for the pattern upside down on the front or the back?

Just bought some more PUL fabrics.. Lot 1 (http://www.bizztools.net/misc/nappyswatches2.jpg) Lot 2 (http://www.bizztools.net/misc/nappyswatches.jpg)

heheheh, so glad someone noticed our 'shell' prop!! i was so worried she would drop it while i was busy snappin away with the camera:laughing: ( and yes i think she is gorgeous, but i am biased!)

i had always looked at the gorgeous little singlets at markets and the day it dawned on me that now that i can sew nappies i can probably sew things on singlets too....well, i don't think i will have many plain singlets left soon!

little toad i do not use malden mills fleece or pul:( i have just had a 10 minute 'convo' with dp over wanting to buy some of that silver pul too. (he said noooo)
i bought a bundle of flannalette (oppy)and picked up some left over polar fleece ( our small town haberdashery/quilting shop bargain bin) and i nave been making my nappies from these. then i tried some suede fabric i found at a little fabric shop that was marked for upholstery or clothes. i am not sure if this is actually 'nappy' suedecloth, but i will make do with what i have until i run out....and by then the silver pul will be here:rolleyes: hahahaha i pressed the buy button!

oscar'smum. I assumed PUL wasnt breathable at all as there is a thin but solid rubber layer... It wouldnt make much difference what type of material was used.

I think if you want breathable you have to use a waterproof fleece.

Definately as leak proof as the GK's. I use GK prints at night and have used those ones at night and not had any leaks. I guess it depends on how well you stuff them;)

Well, i've got my machines set up now to get sewing but i'm wondering do i have to pre-wash the fabrics before making my nappies up?? I can't wait to get started but i don't want to make my nappies up only to find they shrink the first time i wash them...

So can someone enlighten me, please?

definately pre-wash! i'd wash anything you think could run (mostly bright colours like red) separately, but generally, wash the fabrics like you would wash the nappies, so there are no surprises later.
eg, if you hot wash nappies and tumble dry, then hot wash the fabric and tumble dry!
also if you bought hemp, it does reach max absorbancy after 10-12 washes, but if you don't want to wash it that many times before making stuff then just know your nappies will themselves become more absorbant over time

can't wait to see more.

not being able to sew is no excuse:laughing: . i couldn't sew either until i sewded one up, now i even graduated to making a skirt for dd the other day! and even if it is a bit wonky, all the better to show off the cloth nappie under it!!:D

I should be a gracious and humble winner but I just can't believe it because I CAN'T SEW and I won the sew off, that is so funny!!

Well first off I would like to thank the lovely Tea Lady for her wonderful pattern which is just perfect for my baby and was much appreciated.

I would also like to thank the lovely Meme for being my inspiration. When you sewed that first pocket that day and said you couldn't sew I thought to myself "hey, I can't sew either!" and that gave me the confidence to give it a go.

Poshbecks for inspiring us all to get off our bums and submit a nappy for the sew off in the first place. Thanks for organising it. I loved your Precious Moments nappy.

Congratulations to Funky Chicken for getting second place with your gorgeous moonbaby nappy. Very cute and very, very creative.

And thank you to Oscars Mum and Hoop Dee doo for taking part in the Sew off and making it heaps of fun.

Those who wanted to enter but couldn't this time, we must do this again some time. The pressure is on for me as defending champion and I doubt that I can win two in a row, so lets see who comes up with what!!

Sorry I should be more humble but I can't pretend that I am not absolutely STOKED and stunned and amazed  .

Yay for the cloth mamas, you're a lovely lovely bunch and this has been heaps of fun.

Yay Shed!:smiliedance: You are an inspiration to sewer's and non-sewer's alike. How many order's have you received so far? :p

You do realise that the stakes are very, very high now-nappies will never be the same again as we all attempt to make extra-ordinary creations with wings, tails, ears, faces.......................:D

You deserve all the accolades and well-wishes. Just think, come summer you can show off your creation to the public!

Now to get my thinking cap on for the next one...................

They are all just great - and I kick myself that I didn't at least get to see how hard it is. I hope I can join in on the 2nd round.
