What does your 5 year old DD like?

I need help! It is both of my niece's birthdays this month, and they are turning 5 and 6.

The 6 year old is obsessed with Hello Kitty and is now at big school, so I am getting her a HK backpack, lunch box, pencil case and necklace.

The 5 year old likes mermaids, but I can't find much mermaid stuff around. I got her a mermaid dress up costume and doll last year, so can't do those again.

Help! What can I get the 5 year old that is sort of on the same par as the 6 year old's gift?

I am getting them a beautiful doll house for Christmas, so I don't want to go too overboard for their birthdays.

How about a library bag and some books?
Or some crafty stuff, like paint and canvas or sewing/knitting/crocheting
Kids love 'grownup' craft stuff at this age :)

I second the crafty stuff. Maybe google mermaid craft? My 5yo will do craft all day if she could.

the prep girls at work (5 years old) love littlest pet shop, all craft stuff if it includes gel pens and glitter there
on haha, beads and making bracelets, dress ups, dolls, pretend play with pretend food etc :), pretend
phones all that type of stuff, puzzles, books

DD has just turned 6, and all of the above would make her a happy panda. Polly Pocket is also a fave.

I ended up going with the craft option, and got them two presents each so they have something to open on each other's birthday too (hate to think one would feel left out)!

I got them each a Make Your Own Pop-Up Book kit, which is so freaking cool I want to keep it for myself, and a bead set with all different kinds of beads (including letter beads so they can spell their names) and strings etc to make jewelry.

I hope they like them :D
