i have mastitis in one of my breasts and was advised to feed more from it then the other, im on antibiotics now but my breast is almost twice the size of my other one.
what should i do, should i make sure it drains completely, or just leave bub on till she's finished her feed and then feed with my other breast next time?

how long will it take for it to settle back to a normal size?

it hurts to feed her still, and is worse because it always seems full:(

what can i do?

Hi Bronny-jane

Poor you! I hope you are resting. Re feeding with mastitis - you will need to drain both breasts -at each feed. Start each feed on the sore side or if it's too painful, start on the good side until letdown then switch bub so the sore breast is drained . If baby wont take both sides, express for comfort off the other side too.

Applying heat before feeds will help the milk fow better and applying cool packs ( cool cabbage leaves - but keep them off your nipples or a bag of peas well wrapped) after feeds will be soothing and help with the inflammation.

Your Doctor may also be able to arrange ultrasound treatment (some Drs do this or a physio) to help with the inflammation - take your baby and feed straight after treatment.

I cant stress how important it is to rest until you feel well again. Essential services only and IN BED the rest of the time! Surround yourself with books/ magazines drinks and food - take your bub to bed and nurse. Or sit on the couch and watch a DVD - feet up!

Prevention is better than pain - please dont restrict or schedule feeds; make sure baby is well positioned; REST REST REST! Eat well and if you notice any lumps/ bumps or redness in your breasts , apply heat and empty the breasts - take a panadol and express under a warm shower, massaging your breasts towards the nipple. AND REST REST REST!
