 new_mummy82 I use a Braun ThermoScan. It is a thermometer that goes in the ear. Very easy to use and one of the biggest benefits is you can do it when the baby is asleep. Well worth spending a little extra money

We've got the Thermoscan too and find it very useful. However, they are not the same as the ones the Dr's use (they cost about 5 times more even though they may look the same) and one problem many people have is that it is a very fussy thermometer to use. Basically, if you don't have it positioned correctly (eg. straight in the ear) it will not give an accurate reading. I personally don't find this a problem (had our Dr show us a few tricks to get it right) and always check both ears for a median temp and accuracy. Some people find it difficult and I know several irl who no longer use them and prefer the mecury themometer under the armpit. We pack ours with us whenever we travel (along with my neurotic first aid kit LOL) and make sure you always have a spare battery on hand too.

I use an underarm thermometer at the moment, works well :)

I will be getting an ear one soon, we were told at antenatal that you can't use an ear one when they're newbies... and recently read that that's because of the extra moisture in their ears will give false readings.

At the hospital Cobey was born with a high temp, so they had to keep checking his temp every hour, they'd do the under-arm one :)

I use the Braun Thermoscan too. I check 3 times and the reading that I get twice is the one I go off.

For my older two kids I used one of those digital underarm thermometers and they are just ****. I would have to wait about 5mins for it to beep, while holding a squirming child who hated to be held. More often than not they would dislodge the thermometer and I'd have to start again.

The Braun Thermoscan is well worth the money!!

Weird....when my kids were newborns, the midwives would use the ear ones to check their temps.

I have one of these also they're great  (I was given it by work as a baby shower/leaving gift) I was told though you cant really use it under 6 months due to the ear canal size so before 6 months I used an under the arm one.

The thermoscan gives a pretty good readings though you need to remeber that if they have been lying on that side then the reading may be a bit higher - same if they've been out in the cold it could be lower etc...

I agree there EJ hated the under arm one it wasnt easy to get a reading unless she was really asleep - Id have to do it while Bfeeding her it was the only way

I work within a first aid department of a charity, and we sell the talking forehead thermometers which are meant to be pretty good.

They aren't cheap - around $60.00 - but I definitely want to get one. They have a sensor which you place on bubs forehead and it takes the temp in no time, records it for you and tells you what it is.

PM me if you want any details - but I think you can also buy them in the baby shops for around the same price.

I have just bought the talking forehead one and I love it. Quick, unintrusive and the little man thinks the music and tinny voice is pretty good, even when he has a raging temperature.

We've been using the Braun ear thermometer and been very happy with it but after 14 months it has suddenly stopped working (no its not just the batteries). I decided at around the same price I'd try the forehead type as there were then no issues with ear canal size, needing to check both ears etc (not that that has really been a problem) and I can use it while he's asleep (he wakes up with the ear one). The upshot of the ear thermometer is that my little man has no problems whatsoever with getting his ears checked at the doctor. They are amazed at how happily he'll sit and let them look (we have made checking his temperature a bit of a game and always check both ears). Even though we'll take his temperature with the new one, it is quicker and easier, we will 'check' his ears every now and then just to keep him in the habit.

We have a traditional underarm thermometer for travel as well but the little man HATES it. It may be more accurate... if you can get them to stay still and stop screaming and waving their arms about ...

We have a Chicco forehead one, you scan to the side of the temple without actually touching. From what we gather they are not as accurate, but I figure it will be accurate enough to tell us if bub has high temp or not.

I use an underarm digital one at the moment, which works great but as she gets older I want to get a digital thermoscan one, cos I cant imagine trying to get her to stay still long enough:laughing: :D

we have a ear thermoter. It does ear, forehead and room temp. Jess used to hate it but now she's hillarious if there's something that looks around the same shape she puts it in ear pulls it out looks at it puts back in and does the same thing. She's such a copycat
