View Full Version : Gracie vs Grace?
DH and I both LOVE Gracie, but I am unsure if its a name that can grow with a little girl?
Would you use Grace and call them Gracie whilst growing up (giving them the choice once they reach an age) or go with Gracie, which is actually the name we love more?

What's the point of giving a name if your going up change it to a nickname. Call her Gracie and then it is her name!

I'd go the full name. If your daughter becomes a lawyer or a judge (or some other professional), she mightn't want such a colloquial name. Giving her the option is the way to go.

I'd go Grace officially and call her Gracie unofficially. My friend has done this as she feels Grace is a grown up name that her daughter will grow into where Gracie is a child's name that she will grow out of.
Grace and then call her Gracie. Grace sounds much better on job applications etc and Gracie is a very cute nickname.
As PPs have said, on her birth certificate put Grace and call her Gracie...the same as my two are Madeleine and Oliver but I can't remember the last time was called them that...they're Maddy and Ollie.
PS. Beautiful name.

Love the name OP. As PP have said Grace on the official stuff, but call her Gracie.
Thank you all for your responses, DH is still stuck on Gracie whereas I am swaying towards Grace... he has a thing with ee/ie sounding girls names, our other close contender is Daisy!

I love both Gracie and Daisy - but I would definitely name her Grace for her official status.
Several years ago a friend of a work colleague named her daughter Mango. I thought that if I had a choice, I couldn't take someone seriously with a name like Mango. What if this little girl wants to be a doctor or policewoman?
I'd go grace & call her Gracie.
That what we did/do.

I know a lot of people are saying to go with Grace as it is more "adult" but what about other similar names... Casey/Lacey/Tracey etc. They are names that are not laughed at when put on job applications. I don't see the difference really. It is not like you are naming her Candy or something... If you like Gracie I think you should go for that!

I would go grace, and use Gracie. Then she will have the choice which she would prefer to be called as she grows, and it will more than likely change as she does.... She'll probably want to be called just 'G' as a teenager or some other nickname :)

i'm with the majority. you're a cute little kid for a very short time and an adult for a very long time. gracie is not imo an adult name.

Definitely go with Grace or Gracie. I'm not a fan of Daisy, it doesn't pass the 'head of state' test for me (can you imagine a prime minister or CEO named Daisy?).
We have a Gracie in our mothers group (one of the kids) and I actually prefer it to Grace.

Lol, I had to laugh at this! My gran is Daisy which is why it came up and is still floating around, although I completely get the ‘head of state’ thing… maybe that’s why she calls herself Pat! (not that its any better really!)

Thank- you for this, its put it into perspective a little more :)

Hopefully your friends daughter is friends with Apple, then she might not feel quite as strange ;)
Thank you everyone else! Any feedback is greatly appreciated! (and yay for my first time multiquoting!)

Nicknames as real names is a pet hate of mine.
I'd go Grace, and she could be Gracie for short. I always imagine their name on their wedding invites..."Gracie" just sounds so informal.

I agree grace & call her Gracie.
We wanted a Billy and were putting William on his birth certificate.
... Though somehow accidentally wrote down Jasper ;) ;)

I would go with Gracie. There's nothing to say that when she's older and IF she decides Gracie is not 'grown-up enough' she can't go by Grace, much as she would be going by Gracie as a kid if her name was Grace. I'm sure there are plenty of professional people that don't go by the name on their birth certificate for many different reasons.
I go by my middle name and my partner has been trying for years to get people to call him James after everyone calling him a nickname his parents gave to him as a baby and actually changed on his birth certificate
Who knows what will happen when she grows up. Give her the name you love. I think it's gorgeous :)

My name was abbreviated to something with the "ee" sound on the end when I was little. As I got older I didn't like the cutsie sound and still don't like it if someone calls me by that name. I will and do shoot them a look if I hear that name leave their lips. :gonnagetit:Was fine when I was little, but not so much now. But, that's just me... I'm not a cute girly girl type. :D Manicures, frilly dresses and hair treatments are not my thing. It might suit someone else.
