hi friends
i have just gotten home from spending 3 days and 2 nights in hospital with Gypsy, she had a very nasty asthma attack( her first ). it was all very horrible and frightening. was wondering how many other mums have been thru similar things cos i think its always helpfull 2 have someone 2 share the not so nice times with.

My son had asthma when he was younger. He's 6.5 now and seems to have grown out of it. We made many trips to emergency in the middle of the night when he was younger and had one scary ambulance ride and hospitalisation. It can be very scary indeed!
We found a good peadiatrician. He managed the medication (ventolin and flixotide) and reviewed him regularly. DS mainly got asthma in response to a cold or other respiratory infection and sometimes due to exercise. We did allergy tests and found he wasn't really allergic to anything in a big way - which was good.
I also have another friend whose son had a serious asthma attack and ended up in hospital in an oxygen tent. He's now 5 and never had another attack.
My advice is to read up on asthma and get your GP to refer you to a paediatrician (we saw one privately at the RCH in Melbourne and after the medicare rebate it cost $20 an appt - even less with the safety net).
Good luck and best wishes
Flib
PS My younger DD doesn't have asthma

Hun :hugs: to you and little G!
Been there done that and its soooo not nice!
My son has had allergies from day one so no suprises there LOL BUT i would reccomend getting your little girl allegy tested (theres usually a long wait list in the public system so get in early OR go private)
When my son had his first ans second asthma attack (within weeks of each other)and was admitted to hospital he was about 18mths old and it was very draining....I wasnt really scared as i too am an asthma sufferer and was in and out of hospital all my childhood.
Once they put him on the steroid medications his breathing went back to normal
However there were other very noticable side effects and he reacted pretty badly to the ventolin (became very aggressive, displayed unusual behaviour like biting himself, biting furniture, acting out, crying for no reason)
He was a totally different child!
So i wasnt too happy with pumping his little body with these drugs,
Once he was over his second attack i sought out alternative therapies.
My first stop was a natropath that came highly reccomended (by other mums like me)
We started seeing her and about a month later ds had another attack this time however he was not hospitalized and it was less severe, plus he recovered quicker.
He stayed on the natropath drops for about 6mths and was asthma free:smiliedance:
We also give him a multi vitamin and cod liver oil which helps to boost his immune system (his like me and gets sick easily) and also helps the mucus membranes in his lungs.
Our natropath is very $ so as a cheaper option (after he became well) i started giving him brauers medication which is a homeopathic medication (all natural) when he gets a fever, cold, cough, flu etc you can get them from your chemist.
They are really great, you can also get lollipop versions for older kids:D
My sons asthma like symptoms are effected by his allergies so once we learnt this we deal with his allergies (by giving him phenergen when he has a reaction) and avoid the asthma all together.
I hope you find all the answers you need and that G is well again soon!

Sorry to hear about your little girl :hugs: I had asthma when I was younger but it soon eased as I got older. My little sister who is 9 on the other hand was taken to hospital last night suffering her first asthma attack :( She is still there staying over night again tonight. It's a horrible thing isnt it & can be quite scary.
