View Full Version : Anxiety Disorder - Inositol ?

So I went to the doctor today, to try to figure out what's happening with Rachel's constant weeing, and complete inability to hold on, which I've written about in the TT forum before.

I'm busy thinking "UTI", because that seems to be happening to every second baby/preschooler that we know, but the doc didn't seem to think much of that, and instead he wants to treat her for a possible anxiety disorder. This is based on:

* She's an introvert
* She's shy of strangers, and
* I ate a lot of dairy products in pregnancy.

He's given us some dietary supplements to try - stuff called Inositol, which I'm totally fine with, because it seems pretty harmless from my Googling ... also, Rachel likes the taste and is keen on taking medecine in general.

However, I'm still pretty sus about his diagnosis, given that:

* Apparently this is a big research area of his. (so he's probably prone to seeing it everywhere)
* By his own admission he doesn't really know anything much about little kids
* So she's shy of strangers ... well SHE'S THREE - aren't LOTS of three-year-olds shy of strangers? I mean, I do know kids her age who'll talk to anyone and everyone right off the bat but isn't that actually the more unusual thing?
*Also, being an introvert is not a problem, thanks very much ... her DAD's an introvert, her MUM's an introvert ... half her family's made up of introverts. It's a personality type, not a disorder!

Actually, I'm more than a little peeved about that last point - that's what I was thinking about all the time he was going on (and ON) about how much we'd see a big change in her behaviour even if it didn't solve the weeing issue, except I didn't say anything to him because I was afraid he's want to spend the next half an hour talking about it and my goodness that guy could TALK - I was surprised not to see his entire surgery stashed to the ceiling with donkey's hind legs

Anyway, if anyone's read this essay this far :o what I'm wondering is - anyone had their kids diagnosed with an anxiety disorder? Taken Inositol? Any experiences?

And if anyone knows a good doctor in the Carlton/Brunswick sort of area, I might be interested in that too...

I don't have any personal experience in this area but was this guy a GP? If he was then I would be asking to see a paediatrician. I wouldn't be accepting a diagnosis of an anxiety disorder in a 3 year old from a GP. Especially given that your main issue has to do with TT and weeing. As you say - her parents are not really outgoing so why the hell would she be?

Actually given the possible implications of such a diagnosis I would get a second opinion anyway. I kind of think that personality/anxiety disorders are a bit over diagnosed with kids and the focus should be more on accepting their individual personalities and working with them.

Unfortunately I don't live in your area so I cannot recommend a doctor. I hope you find a good one.

On the other hand there is a series of books out there called "the five love languarges" and there is one especially written for children. I can't remember the author but I know they are great books and address parenting from the perspective of different personalities. Maybe it would be worth seeing if you can borrow a copy from your library?

thanks for your reply - yes, I know the 5 love languages, it's one of my favourite relationship books! (actually that's not saying much usually I think they're pretty rubbish. But I like that one :) )

Yes, he was a GP. We're due to go back in two weeks to "see how it's going" - if nothing happening I would definitely be asking to see a paed
