View Full Version : Whats in your baby's cot?
I am putting my son in his cot tonight for the first time, and am quite nervous about it... I was just wondering if anyone has any tips/advice for what to put on mattress... just cotton sheets, sheepskin underblanket etc, and how they actually put them in there, ie the same as in a basinett- wrapped in a muslin wrap and then tucked in with blankets at the bottom of the basinett/cot...??
And do you have any tips on how to make the transition easier for bubs? He is a pretty good baby, so hopefully I wont have any trouble, but just in case...
Thanks

When they were wee bubs, I wrapped them as usual (arms all tucked in), then tucked them in firmly right at the bottom of the cot - as per the sids picture. Not sure about sheepskins - instinctively i wouldn't - in case they roll over, the surface should be quite firm - sheepskin might make it a bit squishy. No toys or anything.
Now that Ben is big, he just wears a sort-of sleeping bag with arms (he kicks off the covers otherwise), and has a dog he cuddles. He doesn't have a blanket or anything.
I would suggest keeping the same sort of routine as you did in a bassinette. E.g. if wrapped in bassinette, then wrap in cot. I didn't use any sheets in the cot at all. The only thing in it was his lambswool which he slept on top of.

I had a sheepskin underblanket bought for me from a baby shop, it is fitted around the mattress snugly, and it isnt real thick iykwim, on the front of the packet it said it keeps them warm in winter and cool in summer, what about this? Should I leave it off?

In Jacksons cot he has his quilt that naany made but he usally sleeps on top of a lambswool, its really warm in our house so he is either in a nappy or a one piece without arms and legs with s nice plush like blanket! He sleeps like a Baby

I didn't use the lambswool until I transferred DS to his cot at about 3 months of age. His was from NZ and was for babies. I have found them to be great and DS uses it in summer and winter without any problems. Mind you, I live in North QLD and in summer we have the air-con on most of the time. :)

It's hard to know without seeing it, I guess. Imagine sleeping face down on it - would it reduce the airflow around your nose? (in the unlikely circumstances that he decides to roll over in his sleep). If you think it would, don't use it, otherwise it should be fine. If you aren't sure, I would leave it off, and show it to your maternal and child health nurse next time you see her. It sounds really nice, but caution is good. Baby products are not always as safe as they should be.
And, I agree, stick to the same routine, explain the change to your baby as you put him in (i think it's never to early to talk to them as though they understand). If you don't make a big deal of it, there's no reason he should. :)

I think they are the same thing. I think...
I also used those baby bumpers with DS to keep him from rolling on his tummy. When he got to 6 months old he was strong enough to overcome that restraint though and was constantly sleeping on his tummy. He didn't seem to have problems breathing on his tummy as his head was always to the side. But it's up to you as to how your baby sleeps and if you want to risk it.
Oh, the other thing I was going to say is that I have found the lambswool is a great cue for DS to go to sleep now that he is older. He loves it and if it is being washed he misses it a bit. He loves snuggling up to it.

I put my bubs basinette intot he cot for a few days so she got used to seeing the mobile above her and was used to new surrounding then she was ina snuggle bed in the cot for about a mnth then when she was too big for that straight into the cot on her own.
I just put a lambswool underlay,a very thin one, and then a sheet over the top and that was it.To cover her i used a sheet and a blanket according to the weather.
My bubs always has slept on her side and i would wrap her in a light muslin wrap and put her between the roll wedges on her side and as she has gotten older she will roll onto her tummy if she likes.
I have a few soft teddies at the top of the cot and she likes to lay there and turn her head and stare at them till she falls asleep.
I dont use bumpers around the cot as i believed when she was younger if she rolled into them and her face wedged into the bumper then she may not have been able to breath.

Yeah, i have been putting Cooper in there for short periods to get used to the mobile... so hopefully it will help with the transition
