Hi there
I have just found the pommie section of bubhub! Excellent!!
Does anyone miss Crispy Duck and pancakes? I never found it anywhere here so have had to use a Jamie Oliver concoction! I just gorge myself on it at the Chinese when I go back to the UK!
Also, can anyone recommend a decent indian curry house in Brisbane? My DH is constantly disappointed. We lived in Leeds for 8 years and its surrounded by great curry houses. Not so in BrisVegas (that said the weather is heaps better! )

Hi Lucas's mum,
My ds2 is called Lucas too - great name!
We have the same problem! We have been on a mad hunt for a great indian since we got back (my dh is australian) and we have managed to find a few now...I'll pm you with the list if you like?! dh also loves that crispy duck and pancakes, but you are right, very few chinese places here seem to do it, but I think I have seen it somewhere...I just have to remember where...! Let me know if you find any!

"Aaaaaarrrgghhh!! Crispy duck and pancakes" I put a similar thread on here a while ago asking for a decent Indian resturant, I actually crave that dish now and again but get so disappointed when it comes, the ducks always fatty and soft:barf: We're on the northside of Brisy and find Bombay Bliss o.k. If you find one, let us know!

 Georgie! I know what u mean about the fatty ducks!! Jamie's receipe is actually pretty close (you can buy the 'Peking Pancakes' at Chinatown) and that is even taking into account my limited cooking ability. Its also v easy and doesn't need deep frying. Importantly its actually CRISPY. Let me know if you want me to post the receipe - it was in a magazine so I am not breaking any copyright laws!!! Thanks for the Indian R tip!

HI
I luuurrrve Crispy Duck and have not found it here at all. Please PM me the recipie. As for decent curries - we have a great one called Indus. I think there are two branches and our one is in Chapel Hill literally 500 yards away!! :D They do a great korma but will spice anything up or down for you, usually, so you can get it how you like it.

We have found a wonderful curry house called Indus. There is one in paddington and also Chapel Hill. The curry's are just like back in the UK. Definately worth a visit.
LOL
The Curries in australia Suck big time:thumbsdown: and me being from manchester with the curry strip in Rushholme...me and Dh really miss the curries:yes:
I can make a better one using pataks curry paste..in fact im convinced that is just what they use but charge you 3 times more for the plastic tub it comes in for authenticity:laughing:
As for crispy duck:p mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Hi Lucas' mum, yes that would be great, I'd love the duck recipe. I do hope it's easy though, not exactly the best cook in the world:o Im also going to give Indus a go too Gail, thanks for that, a decent curry is worth a little journey:yelclap:
Crispy Aromatic Duck - My mouth is watering just thinking of it. I think it would be one of my death row dishes!
If anyone knows of any restaurant in or around Sydney that serves it then please let us know...... Peking Duck is nice but just not as nice.

One of my girlfriends is a pom and her DH loves crispy duck and pankcake and they have found a restaurant in brissy that does it. She's back in the UK at the moment, but when she returns I'll post the details here - you might need to pm me to remind me as preg brain doesn't function well.
Also a great Indian place (again pommie friend found it) is the Sitar - we go to the one at Albion, but they have a couple in Brisbane. Another nice one is the Banyan Tree at New Farm - it's a more modern style Indian (if that makes sense).
I've been to both Indian restaurants a few times and they have been fantastic each time.

I have just stumbled across this thread and I have never ever heard of crispy duck and pancakes before but you have got me craving it now:laughing: I really want to try it. For curries in Brisbane though, the Sitar is very nice. I love their Prawn Malai curry yum:D

"Perfect Chinese Crispy Duck" (serves 4 in Jamieland - strictly 2 greedy Poms in our house)
1 Duck
1 Tablespoon five spice powder (supermarkets of Chinese Supermarkets)
1 Taplespoon paprika
1 Tablespoon sea salt
1 Orange, quartered
1 thumb size piece of ginger, peeled and sliced
I cucumber, halved and shreded
a bunch of green onions / shallots
2 carrots says Jamie, ignore this one says I
24 Chinese pancakes (called Peking Pancakes). I haven't found these in Coles or Wollies but there are available frozen from Asian Supermarkets
A jar of hoisin sauce
Preheat over on 180 degrees. Wash duck in cold water and pat dry with paper towel.
In a small bowl, mix paprika, 5spice and salt together. Rub all over duck - inc cavity.
Stuff duck with orange and ginger. Place breastside down in baking tin and roast for 40 mins
Remove duck from over, drain excess fat. Turn duck breast side up and roast for another hour and 20 mins until skin brown and crispy and meat is cooked.
Meanwhile shread cucumber and onion
Shread duck meat from bone with a fork (should almost fall off)
Served with Hoisin sauce in rolled up pancakes.
Tip: To get really crispy skin turn over up to 200 for last 20 mins of cooking.
Enjoy!:yelclap:

golly, i lived in brissy - carindale - until July this year. I missed england, curries and m&s so much a well as a few other things and so had to come home. Being a west yorkshire girl myself i know what you mean about curries and crispy duck etc. i'm now living in Otley and am relieved i don't have to check out the dozens of crappy curry houses and face disappointment anymore.
there is a reasonable indian chain that has branches in Coorparoo, Carindale and Mount Gravatt i think. not like blighty though.
Where in Leeds are you from?
Good luck with the search:hugs:

I know what you mean about Meanwood. We have lived in adel and Yeadon, and will be moving to Ilkley next week. some nice new housing has been built in Meanwood though, but that LS6 postcode puts me off!!!!
I don't miss the weather at all yet. when we got back in July the weather here was fab, warm and just a beautiful english summer. it rained almost solidly throughout August, then september was lovely again, sunny and warm but not hot at c19c.
October - autumn has hit. its been raining, blustery etc but there has still been some unseasonably warm days as well. last night was foul, but now the sun is shining gloriously shining. Only in england can you have all your seasons in 24 hours!!! Fantastic!!!!!!!
I miss my aussie friends etc but not the country nor the climate.
Happy curry house hunting!!:D :hugs:

BBQ does crispy duck and I think the Phoenix's do them at night.
Re: CUrry Houses - I think I am spoilt! We go to Jaipur's Bizarre in gladesville - i love their dahl. Or Abhis at concord or trishas in newtown.
What are those little seeds called you get at the end of the meal that taste pepperminty?

Excellent. Something else we have in common. I think I already knew you were a fellow pommie but suspect that my serious case of nappy brain is confusing the issue!! I am from London but also lived in Yorkshire for 8 years and Ireland for 12 years. DH is from Devon.

ooh Devon, lovely, I went to boarding school in Somerset, so not far from there at all. I think if we'd not got our visa we probably would have moved to that neck of the woods.....

I have been told good things about the Sitar at Albion also but we went to the one at Kenmore and it was rubbish I am a Korma girl dont like it to hot hubby likes the hot ones it was that mild I could eat it no flavour at all.
As for crispy duck the chinese at taringa does do it but you have to pre order it I have not tried it there but the rest of there food is fab.
Why did I find this thread preg with cravings that cant be forfilled (sp) what am I to do.

OK Ladies I have finally asked my English girlfriend the name of the place in Brissy that makes the great Crispy Duck and Pancakes and it's King of Kings in the Valley. She lives on the Peninsula so it's a bit of a drive but worth it. She did say they had tried a couple of others but won't go back - they'll stick with King of Kings.
Enjoy!

Just found something else that might help with the search for Peking Duck! There is a company that appears to sell what they call a "Peking Duck Classic Chinese Pancake Pack", complete with duck, pancakes & hoisin sauce to take home! Here's the website for them, I think it tells you where you can buy them from....
