View Full Version : Using out of date medicated creams...

I've woken up this morning with a (TMI alert!!) minor bout of thrush :crying: I haven't had it since the beginning of last year, and I had a thrush cream in the cupboard...only to find it expired in July this year.....I went ahead and applied a little anyways (not internally though) and everything feels normal...just wondering if it is unsafe to use an expired medicated cream, should be ok seeing as it is really only about a month out of date??

Basically, if it's expired, then it's not going to work.
The active ingredients would be long dead.

I think youll be right though as its only a month or so expired... as in - you are not going to end up growing an infection down there for using an expired cream.
I have done this many times simply because I havent thought to check the expiry.
Just grab some more when you are out today, but dont worry that your bits are going to turn green or anything because of it!:D

I always chuck out expired medication/creams, but usually don't discover them until they're wayyyy past their expiry.

However, I recently used an anti fungal skin cream that was only a couple of months past the expiry date and it worked just fine to treat a minor fungal rash I had on my upper abs area.

They obviously have to put a date on the packet, but I doubt that the active ingredients just cease working all of a sudden overnight, just because the expiry date has passed. And anyway, most medication expiry dates specify the month of expiry, not an exact day.

My grandpa was a pharmacist and I'm sure you can still use stuff like that past it's useby date.

Dr told me that the active ingredients reduce in effectiveness after use by date...so will still work just not as well as in date creams/medications. ( this was regarding eczema steroid cream...though it worked fine just as it had when in date) but certainly won't do you any harm especially so recently out of date
