View Full Version : Incessant screaming

For over an hour tonight DD has screamed almost non stop. The only time she stops is when she chokes and then she goes right back to screaming.
I have tried everything, I've stripped her off to see if there's any bites/bumps/bruises, felt her all over for sore spots and there's nothing!
I thought maybe she was cutting another tooth, so I rubbed bonjela over her gums, gave her some panadol and sat with her in the rocking chair. I've tried walking around rocking her, tried distracting her with her favourite toy. Dad tried too and nothing works.
What on earth could be so bad that she screams like this? :hair: Should I take her to emergency?

How old is she? It could be a night terror.

Does she have a temperature? Maybe an ear infection? Sore tummy?

I just checked her temperature, 37.1 so its not that, but she has had panadol which might hide it if she did have a fever.
I think I'm just going to take her to emergency, she's been screaming for almost an hour and a half, she's coughing and choking she's so worked up. I hate seeing her like this :crying:
Take her outside for a minute to see if that stops her. I was told by a MCHN to do this with DD night terrors as it shocks their body into another state . If you take her out and she stops crying for a few minutes then at least you may be able to tell if she is just upset or if she keeps crying perhaps she is hurt. Have you checked all her limbs and joints for injury? Does she have a temperature? Just some ideas , not sure what else . Has she done this before ?
When DD did this it was an ear infection. She only calmed down after her ear drum perforated and released the pressure. It's horrible not knowing what is wrong isn't it?

I stripped her down earlier on and ran my hands over all her limbs and I couldn't feel any bumps and she never pulled back from me. I couldn't see any bruises or anything.
She's never screamed like this in her whole life, she's normally a mellow, happy child like her Dad. I didn't know such young children could have night terrors!
I'll try taking her outside first, if that doesn't help I'm taking her to the hospital, this is far from normal for her.

Trust your instincts.
Night terrors usually happen when they are asleep, or that's my understanding of them. Had she been asleep before this started?

She was asleep, had been for about 2 hours. We were curled up on the couch watching tv when we heard her screaming, we both went running and DH looked for spiders etc but never found anything.
DH is standing outside with her now, and she's still screaming. :freakingout:

Has she slept at all? Around this age they do get night terrors, but you would know if it was one if she does not respond to you and "seems" to look at you but doesn't register.
If she continues to scream for more than 2 hours, I would take her to the ED and get her checked. In the meantime maybe a warm bath and some soothing music might help calm her down? If she has a fever, I wouldn't wait with taking her to the ED.
I hope she calms down soon :hugs:
I would be heading to ER or 24 hr medical centre.

Yeah when night terrors occur they are still asleep, so wouldn't be alert at all and would appear scared, but may look awake. I'm guessing you think she is in pain though?

I agree, especially if its not normal for her and nothing is consoling her.

She started screaming about 9.30ish, after a while with me I asked her did she want Dad and she nodded, so she was definitely awake. We are going to take her to the hospital, I can't stand to watch her be like this anymore.
Poor bubba, I hope the hospital can figure out what's wrong.

Keep us updated hun. When DS got his first ear infection, he woke up after 10 minutes of sleep and was besides himself. I dont think she has an ear infection. As soon as she lies down, the pressure gets higher on her eardrums, so she would have started crying within half an hour.
Poor bub :(

Sorry for not letting everyone know earlier, we came home about 10 and slept!
The Dr found that DD's ear canal was infected (otitis externa), he thinks she's either stuck her finger in her ear or some small object and scratched it, the scratch got infected. He reckons she may have bumped her ear or scratched at it last night and that's what set the pain off. It's apparently a very painful thing.
The Dr sedated her (which was blessed relief after 4 hours of screaming), washed her ear out and has put a foam sponge thing in her ear that is soaked with antibiotic drops. 3 times a day I have to put more drops in. He said the sponge will fall out once the swelling goes down and then I just keep putting drops in for another 10 days.
DD is sleeping peacefully now :smiliedance:

Thanks everyone, she's pretty worn out. I think tonight will be much more peaceful!
She doesn't like me putting the drops in, I think she's scared its going to cause more pain, but she's ok as long as Dad holds her and she has her green frog
