I'm a newbie to babywearing - and I'm after advice/suggestions etc etc. Currently I use a peanut shell sling but it's a bit unsustainable IYKWIM. DS is 8.5kgs and 4 mnths - so too young to hip carry ATM and too big to carry around in the sling for ages. I want a carrier (or wrap) that is comfy and supportive enough that when I go out I just grab it and don't worry about the pram. I looooove wearing him, but he is so big :( it kills my back and shoulders. I am a bit lost in the world of slings and wraps - so anything you have to offer is much appreciated. TIA :)

I love my Ergo and could comfortably wear it all day. Once they can go on the back it is so easy:yes:
My DD is now 8 months and if it's nap time she'll fall asleep almost instantly in the back carry

I agree that the ergo is excellent. Carrying a baby on your back is so wonderful. It's really supportive too and you have your whole front free and arms can keep working etc. My bub goes to sleep in it while she is on my back.

I'll third the ergo. Love it. Jasper I'd still occasionally carry in it, he's 2.5 & 20 kgs (I think your only supposed to carry until 18 in the ergo which is an average 3-4 year old. Jaspers just a very heavy boy!)

8kgs is when they feel 'heavy' all of a sudden! I couldn't really wrap/sling carry or carry in the Bjorn much after 8 kgs.

I would go with the ergo, I use that instead of a pram with my 1yr old

I looked at the ergo and it was too fabric heavy for me so i bought a Beco, ill upload a pic to the FB group so you can see how it looks :)

NMCP- quoted the site i bought mine from. She has one exactly the same as mine. Ive worn DS2 for 4hrs at the most and my back was fine.

Ergo or other similar soft structured carrier, there are *heaps* out there, a mai tai would be fairly quick and easy too. Wraps like a didymos are great, super flexible, but I'm yet to become personally experienced; I imagine they would take a bit of getting used to, but once you got the hang of it it'd be great!

HAB's are great, but the stretchy material isn't great for bigger babies IMHO so you may not get longevity. I would suggest an ergo or a mei tai.

i have a hug a bub but i think babies out grow it pretty quick. i prefer it over the ergo with a small baby

The HAB is also a PITA when you want to get out of the car, strap bub on and go, all that fiddling and tying annoys me, i use my Beco all the time. The HAB is for long wears where ill be sitting down for hours.

This is why I stopped using it. It's supportive, it holds the baby close and its lovely, but it is a PITA to get on and off. I ended up moving to a soft carrier that I could just clip up and slide bub into.

A mei tai still has a fair bit of support (not quite as much as the HAB though) but is less complicated to put on.

I would definitely *not* get a HAB at this age!

Definitely an Ergo! My DS is 8.5kgs and I haven't used the pram since we got our Ergo. I've taken him on hikes and shopping - it is so quick and easy to put on and really comfy to wear for ages. Have even breastfed him in it while doing my groceries and no one could tell. I've got the original but if I could chose again I'd get the organic. Definitely would get it over the hugabub which is more for when they are really little imo.

definetely ergo. There are now 2 more ergos out too - performance and sport which are lighter weight fabric so not as hot in summer. Although I used the original ergo in bali (very hot and sticky we were) and managed but will be buying either the performance or sport for this bub. Easy on hib with 1 year old, easy on back, I used it on front occasionally. Great carrier.

thanks everyone :)

I've tried on an ergo and it was a bit heavy (material) for me. DS is a very warm bub so I worry about that.

I scored a Mei tai off ebay for less than $30, and I'm going to make a hug a bub if the mei tai isn't for us.
