It's time to de-bunk the old wives tale. According to my Dr, your ovaries do not alternate left and right each cycle! Has any one else heard this?
After my hysteroscopy/laparoscopy, where I found my left tube was blocked, I noticed that the last two cycles gave ovulation pain on the same side (the left - blocked side) I talked to my Dr and NO your ovaries do not work with military precision.
I thought I should share this with you all. I am looking to prove this in my iVF cycle as I have one ovary is producing more follicles than the other and my gut feeling is it is the left again(3 cycle in a row). Mental note to self: Ask on Friday at ultrasound for details on each ovary!!
:fingerscrossed: for lots of follicles, a good number of mature eggs, a reasonable number of good embryos and the best embryo that will stick and complete our family!!

Yup, that's right! It can be any combination, no set patterns as to which ovary releases the follicle. We breed horses and it really is random. A mare can throw up a good sized follicle on the left and it can grow nicely and then out of the blue she might release another one on the right. We (or our vet) then have to decide which one we are aiming to have as the ovulation to serve her on. Usually first in best dressed as the strongest one will grow and ovulate first. The second one will just reabsorb if not fertilised.
Ohhh...my Anatomy and Physiology Lecturer at Ag college would be proud of me now....................!

Hey, such quick replies!
I was shocked when I heard it. I really thought we did alternate, and when I felt ovulation pain on my blocked side two months running I thought my right ovary had taken it's bat and ball and gone home!
Glad I can add to peoples' knowledge, after all knowledge is power and in this game we need all the knowledge we can get!!

Hey Leannelizzy, good luck with your IVF cycle! :hugs:
I too was amazed when I discovered that the alternating ovaries theory was rubbish - My right tube is destroyed, so I can only conveive when O'ing on my left. I was devastated one month, because I had O pain on the left but no BFP, and thought I had to wait two months for another shot - was shocked to get a BFP the very next month!
Luckily because I'm on Clomid (have to find some positives to it! :D ) I know what side I am ovulating on because of the scans I have. My 1st cycle it was my right and this cycle it was my left, had O pain on the correct sides to.. so far my body is behaving but I'm sure it is only a matter of time before it doubles up on a side!
(although :fingerscrossed: Im preggers so wont be able to find out for 9 months! :D )

I was fascinated that my sonographer could tell me which ovary had released the egg that became my beautiful DS. The whole thing is so random and amazing!! I always thought it alternated until my cousin had one of her tubes removed, but was still ovulating every month.
