I'm not sure what is going on with my one year old son. He is recovering from a cold/flu that came close behind a bout of salmonella which made him very unwell from 9 months. When he got the salmonella he started this behaviour where he sticks his fingers down his throat until he vomits or at least gags. The doctor couldn't explain it. I hoped he would stop when he got better but he hasn't. He has recovered from the salmonella now and is almost recovered from the urti. Has anyone had any experience with something like this? I don't know what to do. Until now I've just pulled his fingers out of his mouth...

My little boy choked really badly when he was 1, nothing was working so I had to put my fingers in and pull out the crueler from his throat... It was awful. For about 2 months after that, every time he would go to swallow food he would put his fingers down his throat and make the food come back up then chew again and swallow. He took ages for him to stop but I would just stop him from doing it and saying "no bubba, you don't need to do that" and yeh after 2 months he stopped.

Thanks diamondeyes. How scary! My bub didn't choke. It did seem to begin with the salmonella. One theory is he may have/had an itchy throat. I guess I'm doing the same - just telling him no but it's been three months and he still does it!

I suppose I'll just keep doing what I'm doing.... Does anyone else have any ideas???

Our DS went through a 2 week phase of doing this which managed to nip in the bud by distracting him

Thanks jpt. Wish I'd made more of an effort to distract him now because he has been doing it for a lot longer than that. Months rather than weeks. Perhaps it's become a habit....
