Has anyone done this?
I am getting married in november and prices for cakes are out of this world.

I was thinking I might make one of those cupcake towers and get the "cutting cake" on top made professionaly and I make the cucakes with proper swirled icing etc and on a proper stand?

Do you think it will look cheap skate?

To get a 2 tiered caked it's $280!! Or is that cheap?

I made my own. It was very stressful, so I definitely recommend practicing a lot before Hand! Make sure you can handle the kind of icing you are doing, that was my downfall. But it was a lot cheaper then a wedding Cake, and tastier!!

I made my cousins wedding cake - it was a fruit cake with 2 tiers and it took me 2 days and $300 for the ingredients! :freakingout: Then we had to get it iced, which was another $100.

I think $280 is a good price for a 2 tiered cake. What kind of cake is it? And remember, do you want to be baking the day before you are getting married ? ahhh! not me :)

Good luck!

I made my BIL's wedding cake. It was 3 tier choc mudcake with white choc ganache. It looked great (If i do say so myself:D) On Each tier I put white choc rectangles I made myself the week before all around the edge overlapping and about 3 cm higher than the height of the layer of cake. Glued them on with extra ganache. Then Each tier had a ribbon tied around the choc tiles on the outside of the cake. If you dont like bows then make the join of the ribbon at the back of the cake. The tricky part was getting the height with out collapsing so put carboard (Specialy from cake shop) between each tier for distributing weight and then some big fat skewers also from cake shop right through all 3 layers.

Good luck with what you decide to go with. I wouldn't want the stress of doing my own wedding cake on the day though!

I had never sone anythin like it before and got lots of comments and it was fairly easy.

I find that to be a great price IMO! Less stress getting someone else to make it. For my birthday my cake cost $120 serving 25-30 people (more like 12 real human sizes hahaha)!

And for my DP's birthday his cost us $200. That served 35-45 people.

I'm smart because I have a smart phone :D

I made my own cupcakes, it was a small wedding, choc cupcakes chocH ga ace then white fondant top with a little flower on top. Also did the same for my sisters wedding.

It always blows my mind how expensive plain cakes are... For that price ud want something lovely.

Where abouts are u located? I've just found a bunch pages on FB for little cake businesses in Melbourne and they are AMAZING!!

In saying that $280 sounds quite reasonable I suppose depending on the size and style :)

$280 is a great price, I ordered mine last weekend and it's $700 for two tier. It will be worth it though as i loveeee my cake.
