DS1 (nearly 6) told me this morning that his tooth hurts.

Tonight he said his tooth is wobbly (first wobbly tooth) so I had a look and the adult tooth has already cut through the gum behind the baby tooth.

Is it normal that the adult tooth starts growing through the gum before the baby tooth falls out? Its been a while since my teeth fell out, I cant remember!

DS is 7 and has lost 3 so far and all 3 had the adult teeth growing behind first. Freaked me out too Lol

Apparently it is quite common...I freaked when I saw DS1s though!

We took him to the dentist because the baby tooth wasn't loose at alll and being pushed against by the new tooth. They pulled the baby tooth. usually the adult tooth erodes away at the baby tooth root as it pushes through.

The second one down the bottom came through the same, but because the baby tooth had a bit of a wobble we left it to come out on it's own.

DS1 loved pretending he was a shark for a little while :P

Yep we're the same. DD1 has her first wobbly tooth - one of her front bottom ones - and I can see the adult tooth is already cutting behind it. Makes me feel better to know that others are experiencing the same thing because I wasn't sure either!

I remember when we were little, my sister had the same situation as Fiveinabed said...her top front adult tooth came through before the baby tooth was even wobbly and pushed it forward. It never got lose, just eroded away. Eventually I seem to recall she had it pulled (she's 30 now so it was quite a while ago :D)

I guess as long as the first tooths wobbly, its gonna go at some point and as PP said, if it were me, I'd love being a shark for a while!!

Yep my Ds has had this about 3 times now. One it eventually came loose and came out, another was loose-ish and the dentist pulled it, and he's got another now where the baby tooth isn't loose at all yet! I'll see how it goes. Oh and FYI when he's had this happen the adult tooth has looked terribly out of place and quite far back in his mouth, but once the baby tooth went the adult tooth moved forward into position.
