At about 6:30 this evening I noticed that DD was swollen on the left side of her face. Her face had looked a bit funny all afternoon, but I put it down to the new turtleneck shirt she was wearing as I am not used to seeing her in one. While she was eating dinner tho, the swelling was very noticable. It was very hard & went from her ear halfway to her chin & was on her bottom jaw line.

I felt terrible that I hadnt noticed it before & was quite shaken, so DH called Health Direct to ask advice. He was told that it was probably an infection caused by bacteria or the cold she has had lately. She doesnt seem to be in any pain & her temperature is is normal. She is sleeping soundly now.

We were told to take her to the doctor first thing in the morning, but to keep a close eye on her breathing through the night in case the swelling goes into her throat.
They have said that it doesnt sound like anything serious, but I am still concerned & cant get to sleep from the worry. I feel awful that I didnt notice it early enough to get her to a doctor this afternoon!

Has anyone else experienced this with their child? What was it caused by?

I dont really have any major idea because obviously i cant see her & because it could be many different things.
Does it seem to be her glands or just the jawline ?
It could be anything from glandular fever to mumps but if she hasnt other symptoms its doubtful.
Sometimes bacteria that sits in the jaw can become activated for whatever reason or it could be an infection that has gotten into her system but it could be something as simple as a mosquito bite as she may be allergic, so yes heading to the doctors first thing is a must even if the swelling goes down get her checked out.
Good luck :hugs:

Thanks allyoo.
It is definetly her jaw & not her glands. She is up to date with all her vaccinations so I dont think it will be mumps although that was our first thought.
I will just have to take her to the doctor in the morning & see what they have to say. I have just checked her & it is still swollen, but I think it has gone down a little.
Thank you!

Thanks for your help guys!

We went to the doctor & have come back none the wiser! The swelling had gone down when Ava woke this morning & I could only feel a little bit on either side just under her ears.
We had taken a photo of her last night when it was at its worst & I took that to show the doc. He said That it didnt look like an allergy or mumps & as she has not been in any pain or had a temperature, he put it down to some sort of infection of the salivary glands & told me to take her back if it happens again & he will refer us to an ear, nose & throat specialist as he has never seen that is a child before.

So, the doctor cant explain what happened & unless it happens again, we will never know!

Maybe it was even just something like a mosquito bite that flared up then settled overnite :detective:

Anyways glad all is ok & its nothing serious but yeah definately head straight back if it happens again because if it is something like an infection in her jaw or the likes you dont want it to get out of hand !

Yaya for well bubbies :hugs:

I think it may have something to do with her chewing coz she was eating dinner when it flared up last night, so I am going to give her something chewy for lunch & see if it flares up again. If it does, I will shoot straight back to the doc!
Thanks allyoo!
