View Full Version : Selective vaxxing or not?? Which way to go...
Today i went to the docs to get a concientious objection form signed. I have been to this surgery before, but there is a new doctor there now. Well she asked me and my DH what our occupations were and what our level of education was, also asked us if we were vaccinnated. All of which i was slightly offfended for her to ask straight up. Then she asked me our reasons which i told her, and she agreed with some of the things i said, like i don't think Hep B is necessary, she agreed and said it can be left up to my DS whether he wants to be protected from this at a later stage or not. Also a few other vaccs she said weren't necessary like Rubella and Pertussis. She basically recommended that he have 'tetanus, diptheria, meningococcal and polio vaccine. If i was to have him vaccinated with anything i would rather it be after he turns one. But i still don't feel comfortable with any vaccinnes. Although i know that i wouldn't know what to do if my DS did contract any of these diseases. So i am not sure. I want to protect my son, but i don't feel the current immunisation schedule is the way to go either. I also left crying as i felt so upset by her, i guess she was trying to make a point and that, but it still left me upset. So i guess i am wondering whether anyone here selectively vaxxes, and which vaxxes did you give your child. Or alternatively, if you don't vaccinate at all, how did you make sure your doc signed the form. She pretty much said to me she wouldn't sign the form until i came back after reading some more info (that she provided) and that she would be happy if i gave my DS just the ones she reccommended. I am soo sooo confused!!
we selectively vax. so far we have selected "none" until he is around 2 years old.
What do you need the form for?
I need the form for daycare, not because the daycare centre want it, but centrelink need it so that they will fund it.... totally BS if you ask me, it shouldn't be up to the government to decide what i can and cannot do! Might even think about just taking him out of daycare anyways, he hasnt' been going for long and it's really not that worth it at his age. It's only one day a week.
I thought that might be why.
Our DS might possibly go to daycare when he's two, which is why we might look at the vaxes then, although its mainly just germy-jim colds and things that he will catch then, and maybe chicken pox or some other grimey thing that's not in the vax schedule anyway.
Then again, maybe he won't go into daycare. Those places are riddled with germs!! full of vaxed kids and riddled with diseases.
If they had a vax for the common cold that would be more useful for daycare than diptheria or Hep B if you ask me.

Hi, Its very interesting what your doc said about the vaxes she recommended as my doc told me a different story.
My doc said Pertussis, pneumoccocal and Hib are the most important and DS could do without the others. I have looked into this and they are indeed the most risky in terms of number of cases. but HIb i would probably forgo aswell. leaving me considering pertussis (IMO the scariest) and pneumoccocal.
just bare in mind that pertussis does not come alone, it comes with diptheria and tetanus and you cannot get any of these seperately (in australia) as i have spoken to drug companies, TGA etc.
If your doc wont sign it then go to another as they have no right to deny you your decision. Its entirely up to you.
I am a selective vaxer and as shed said i have selected "NO" up til now :D
I am very keen to wait til 2yrs and then he will only be having DTPa and pneumoccal most probably. He might get MMR at a much later date but have yet to make a decision about that.
Having said that I do not intend to send DS to daycare and I will be limiting his contact with other children as a protective measure. I would be more concerned if he was in day care and would vax for pertussis and pneumoccoal now.
Verry rude of your DR, like your education level has anything to do with the price of fish:rolleyes: I am also a selective vaxer. My DR agreed with what I had to say I basically said I had made an informed choice based on the amount of Aluminum in Vax's and she agreed, she also told me she recomends getting whooping cough vax if nothing else.
I had Whooping cough when I was 4 and Eliza will be getting that but like every other vax she'll be getting them before she starts school. I wasn't immunised until I was 9 years old I had chicken pox, measels but compared to my brother and sister who were vaxed I had 6 spots and measels for a week compared to them with 4 weeks each of both.
Your baby your choice, daycare schools can not turn you away based on you vax choice, but when there is something going around they won't let your child go to care, but really even if your child was vaxed would you want them around sick children!?
At this point in time i am still undecided, and if i need this form signed for someone so my son can go to daycare, then i won't put him in daycare. It's a shame cause they are a lovely bunch of people at the centre, but i just don't think he is ready yet and also don't want him getting exposed to other nasties he may pick up from daycare.

Not saying the doctor had a right to speak with you this way but they often have to ask these questions so they can report it to the relevant persons. As they like to keep details of where people are located etc if they dont vax. It lets them have a handle on statistics !
Anyways as the others have said change doctors if your not happy they cant force you to choose something you dont wish to do.
Have a look through the web & read up what you can & remember there are many "lies" on both sides so read as much as you can & then know you are informed & next time you get harassed by her lay down the law :p
If you put her in her place she will no doubt back down especially if your happy with your decision ! Be strong whatever your choice ! Good luck :hugs:
I agree it was probably a statistical research type question. Just delivered rudely.
wow they'd love me I only went to school for 3 years aged 13-16, stupid parents of mine!
I guess it was to do with background, but she could have asked a bit more politely and stated reasons why she wanted that info. I have my own health problems and didn't have the energy to state my case as much as i would have liked to. I am just upset and still contemplating my decisions.

Oh so that explains it :p
Sorry you left yourself wide open for that one !!!!
Yeah i totally agree it was obviously delivered rudely & thats not on !!!!
If you feel uncomfortable hun i would suggest you head straight to another doctor because you need to feel comfortable with them this is your health & your bubbas after all !
I dont blame you for being upset but like i said before read what you can etc make your decision & be strong dont let anyone bring you down !!!
Im actually a vaccinator ( that sounds horrible doesnt it lol ! ) but i believe people have the choice to decide whats right for them & their child as long as people consider & make an informed decision thats all anyone can ask for myself included dont be swayed by anyone else whether it be a doctor, an anti vax organisation or a monkey decide for yourself then you know your strong enough to combat even the most annoying person ;)

Just remmeber 1 thing, you are in control NOT the doctor so dont let them intimidate you in any way. Be firm with your choice and dont let them push their oppinions onto you as that is only what it is. They all have different advise on what you should do with your child so basically you need your own informed opinion and stick to it,its your child and their life in your hands so these docs have no right to intimidate any of us into doing what they think we should do. Its actually none of their business and they cannot stop you in anyway nor can you be turned away from any preschool or daycare for not vaccinating so dont ever let them try to pull this one on you either. Id get a new doc and tell them how it is and thats final and you'd like the form signed or you'll go elsewhere.
do they give you the form or do you get it from somewhere and take it in?

My doctor had the form and i simply said i wasnt vaccinating and she gave me the form to sign and said it would save me heartache down the track with the gov hassling me with paperwork and reminders on vaccinating.

I have just come online and thought I'd jump in with a small snippet of info. You will need to have a signed conscientious form to hand in when your child begins school. Either that or a copy of the form stating all vax's have been done. So at some point you will need a Dr to sign one for you. Our children attend a school that neither encourages nor discourages vaxing (the majority would be unvaxed or selectively done so) but these forms are still required by the 'power's that be'. It's always an uphill climb....................

Oh, I just noticed that you are in QLD-I am not sure if the same rules apply in schools up there.

We made the same selection :D . We will reconsider when she is two.
And Pixie, I only spent three months at a normal school but I got learned proper good and I'm rool smart an' that. :D I did do a year and a bit at a Steiner school (grade one and a bit of grade2) and 3 years of correspondence but the rest of the time I was free-schooled. It doesn't mean a thing, I now have a tertiary education  . Mainstream schooling seems to be just time filler that could otherwise be spent actually learning :p
So you're homeschooling your brood Them? ;):p

I'm a vaccinator, but I just thought I'd give you an interesting stat. I read recently that the majority of non-vaccers have good educational backgrounds and are of a high socio-economic status! So don't feel as though the dr was putting you down (even though it sounds like she was a bit abrupt in her approach!).
Yes i realise eventually i am going to have to get this formed signed, so i guess sooner rather than later. I might just tell the doc that i need it signed now and i will consider vaxxing once he is 12 months, and then not go see her again! lol. We are moving soon so i need a new doc when we get to Brissy anyways. Hopefully i find a much nicer doc down there!

Heh, well I would but.....I'm busy that day *shifty eyes*
You know, I often toy with the idea of late. I just doubt my own patience and motivation. I don't want to do the wrong thing by them. And anyway, I'm going back to the big learnin' house in the city next year to git me some more smarts so it wouldn't work anyway.
And anyway, this isn't a thread on homeschooling so shaddup! :p :D
Tee hee.....
I love the idea of home schooling my kids, but I don't think I have the patience or creativity or motivation. I will keep putting the effort into teaching them as much other stuff as I can though. Does that count?
ON topic - if I had another baby I think I would still vaccinate to a fairly high level, but I would delay and spread out the vaccinations much more. With my youngest I started at 3 months, and he had DTP and polio. Then he had the next one on the schedule a months later and so on. He had yucky reactions to a couple, so I waited even longer after those ones. He hasn't had anything that isn't on the schedule.
If I was starting today I think I would put much more importance on vaccinating against those things that my baby would be really in danger of catching, so pertussis, meningococcal, pneumococcal and maybe measles. Hep B can certainly wait until they are older ( I have just had my 11 year old done ), tetanus I would do if the child received a puncture injury, mumps for a boy before he goes to school maybe. I would definately get Hib done too.
I have just decided not to have my four year old's boosters done before school, so I will be heading off for a concientious objector's form signed soon. Hopefully I will receive better treatment than you. Maybe not though.....

So true Pixie, besides doesnt your Dr know that its the educated and affluent mummies who are chosing not to vax these days? I watched this thing on Current Affairs that had some spunky mamas on it and it told me so ;) :D
I was sooo lucky the Dr I went to barely even questioned it and was very polite and friendly and didnt question how edjumacated or effluent I was :p
