View Full Version : Apple allergy...
Hiya,
Im looking for other's out there who's children have allergies to apples and other fruits as well?
DS2 (3 yrs) has allergies to certain foods where he breaks out in itchy rashes usually an hour after eating the said food. Whilst it's not life threatening, the itch drives the little man insane!
So far on the list it's:
Strawberries (itchy lumps in scalp occur and body rash)
Bananas (Gets the runs)
Sesame Seeds (Stomach aches and maternal inheritance)
Taco Seasoning (Vomits and stomach aches)
Cream Cheese (Itchy body rash)
Now Im wondering if it's now apples as he's been eating them and having apple juice as a treat, I havent given him apples since Thursday (At Kindy) and today he had some juice with our picnic which within an hour he broke out in a rash, he had this with just some hot chips (no sauce, just plain)... DH said apple juice was an ingredient in the said juice. Ive suspected this for a couple of weeks now, but started eliminating other foods before Apples with no change, that's when I started looking at apples being a possibility.
Has anyone had this happen? Apples are SO common :( This is so hard on the little man. I have been doing some reading and it seems to be was they call a "Birch" allergy? Where it's combined into a food group in Oral Allergy Syndrome? Ive been to GP's and naturopath's who are all stumped and wont help, I found these allergy above by trial and error

My hubby is allergic to apples and pears. We've looked at the FODMAPS diet for him. Id keep looking for someone in the natural therapies to help you out. Perhaps a kinesioligist? (sp?) I have my reservations when it comes to main stream naturaopaths, GPs really know nothing about these type of things and try to cover these issues up with medications. On another note identifying a problematic food needs to be done with elimination as foods take a while to exit the system and can cause havoc from day 1 until it's gone, sometimes a couple of days after consumption. Keep persevering and try find someone who can take you through elimination.

hi, i came across this website when I was looking for kiwifruit allergy and it mentioned oral allergy syndrome, hope it helps
http://www.sch.edu.au/health/factsheets/joint/?fruit_and_vegetable_allergy.htm
Thank you! :) It's the same article I read last night on it, very very interesting as he is allergic to three foods in Birch Allergy group. Will be mindful of the foods listed but relieved to read that just because he is allergic to some foods in the group, doesnt mean he is for all the foods. Phew!!
We took our DS to Kinesology for his intolerance tests.
The results blew me away - and you get the answers on the spot.
Perhaps worth a try?
I'm allergic to Kiwi Fruit and it's quite annoying as it's often in fruit salad and on cakes/desserts cause it looks pretty. I just get the oral allergy syndrome so nicely described in that link above. I take zyrtec & the symptoms go away within a very short time frame (under 30 minutes).
I also get allergies to unknown foods (thankfully my allergies seem to have gone away for this pregnancy) and I was getting random hives about once a month last year. Zyrtec made a huge difference to my symptoms and I was carrying it with me. I even got diarrhoea from a food and I thought maybe it was an allergy thing (it went on for days and happened each time I tried a particular food) and I took a zyrtec and it stopped, immediately.
Make sure you are treating your ds's reactions with a non-sedating anti-histamine and you'll find he feels better. You probably do this already, but in case you're not, I thought I'd let you know how it really helps me. I hope you can work out what foods to avoid soon.

I'm not allergic to apples as such but I cannot digest apple anything .. It ferments in my stomach and then I'd spew up feral off mushy horrible apple .. It's horrible. I was allergic to strawberries but ate them anyway with no major problems, just a blotchy rash (not itchy or anything) .. I grew out of it. And oranges give me migraines.
Your poor ds .. Hope he grows out of everything :)

Hi there!
My son (4ys) has Oral Allergy Syndrome, which means there are very few fruits or vegies that he can eat raw. Once they are cooked, frozen or tinned however he seems to tolerate them better.
It took us a long time to discover that this was what was causing his severe stomach aches, diarohea and sometimes vomitting, as I blamed everything but fruit and veg. When I came to this conclusion, not even my GP took me seriously, but insisted on being referred to an allergist. She skin prick tested 15 raw fruits and 12 came up positive :( We're working through different fruits, basically through trial and error and have come up with a handfull that the tolerates.
As for apples... I have learnt through talking to others with OAS that if you peel and let them sit for about 15 minutes (until they start to go brown), my son tolerates them alot better. It is suppose to break down what ever is causing the allergic reaction.
Oral Allergy Syndrome is rare in children, so I am eager to find anyone else dealing with it with their child. It can be tough!

Fructose malabsorption could be something to look into also - I have a friend who has this and can't eat anything with natural fructose - it's in more than you think......
