View Full Version : soy products: evil??!
Woah - I've just freaked myself out completely!! I was browsing through the "pregnancy nutrition" info on Bubhub, and discovered that soy products can cause horrible problems for bubs, in-utero and then during breastfeeding. I'd never heard this before. Eeeeek!!!!
I switched from cow's milk to soy milk 14 years ago - I don't drink it apart from on my b'fast cereal, but even so, I'm now very scared that I'm doing the wrong thing.
Has anyone else been in the same situation? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. In the meantime, I will switch to lactose-free milk and try to stop hyperventilating. (If I'm panicking, I apologise - it's just that, after one m/c, I'm keen to avoid anything even remotely dangerous for bub.)
Thanks!

Relax, min, breathe......okay! :)
I am a soy milk drinker from way back, not for any reason apart from enjoying the taste. I drank it all through my pregnancy, on cereal, in my decaf, by itself, and had no ill-effects. I am still breastfeeding and still drinking it.
I think a lot of information out there is applicable to only a small percentage of people. Not to say it isn't valid, but I think you can worry too much about every little thing when you're pregnant - I know I did.
If you're only having soy on your cereal, relax and go ahead.
If you're still worried, get your GP/midwife's opinion.

Sorry to have alarmed you! It really applies (with most things) if you drink soy milk in excess - eg 4 litres a day type of thing. If you just have it on cereal in the morning and in tea/coffee, I think that you should be fine.

I've been drinking soy milk through my pregnancy (due to a lactose intolerance) and just stick to a brand that doesn't have genetically modified beans in it. It should say on the label whether or not it does.
Thanks, everyone! That advice all sounds very sensible, and I should have thought of it myself. I think I was just so shocked to discover that there's even a debate over soy and pregnancy - I've always thought of soy products as simply very good for you! So much huffing and puffing about "what to do when you're pregnant" out there. (I'm sure it will just get worse when bubs is born!)
So I'll stick with my (non-GM) soy milk on my cereal, but might up my intake of cheese for extra calcium.
Hilary - no need to apologise - the language on the NZ website (via the link provided in Bubhub) just caught me unawares - pretty strident stuff! But it's balanced out by other info out there in cyberspace.
Thanks again!

I think I have mentioned this before on this forum but soy is one of the most, heavily sprayed crops of all (and poor old tatoes). Make sure the brnad you are dinking is not on non GM, but organic.
They plant the soy, not worry about the weeds growing and then fly over and bomb the **** out of the paddocks with Roundup. Only the soy survives. EEEK

I'm a big Soy Milk drinker too (allergic to all dairy).....is the organic Soy Milk readily available in supermarkets? I've never checked the labels for the milk being GM or organic (only the sugar and calcium contents).

Missus S, Sanitarium sell fresh organic soy milk. I found it in Coles. I'm sure other supermarkets would have it too. In the refridgerated section.
Hubby drinks about a litre of regular So Good a day. To be on the safe side I'm going to start buying Organic for me. I was drinking Up and Go for breakfast till now. I think I better start going back a proper cereal instead. I can't drink straight cows milk. I use it in cooking and hot drinks though.
