View Full Version : Ideas for nutritious meals when nauseous???
I'm a first time mumma and havent got a handle on my diet yet....
Does anyone have good ideas for nutrition while having nausea/MS???
I have been eating cheese on crackers, pasta with grated cheese, toast with baked beans and some soup with bread. I snack on rice crackers and yogurts and drinking a lot of juice but i need to get more protein into me i think.
I know this isnt a very balance diet but cooking smells make me feel so ill and i cant stomach any meat.
I would love a ham and salad sandwich with lots of fresh salad but cant have the ham!!!!!!!!
Lunch is the worst time... and I feel like I am putting on weight.
What are you ladies eating???

How about a big pot of soup? Cram it full of veggies :) if you make lots and freeze small portions you will have quick nutritious snacks.
Bananas are good for protein and energy.
Have you got a juicer? I do up big batches of juice and put a jug of it in the fridge and have a glass a day. Add some Ginger to combat nausea. A nice one would be apple, carrot, watermelon, celery, spinach, pear and Ginger.

Sorry I obviously didn't read your op properly lol.
But fresh juice and homemade soups would be much more nutritious than store bought, unless that's what you are doing already :)

I'm no help sorry, just wanted you to know you are not alone... And your diet sounds ok to me considering what I've been eating!!
And the baked beans on toast is one of my favs at the moment too.
When the nausea dies down you will feel better and be able to eat healthier and with more variety. Til then I'm just trying to get by, my main aim is to keep the food down!
thanks ladies, i just wish i could eat some ham or cold chicken. i just cant get around that! Bananas are like $14 AUS per kilo at the moment due to cyclones in QLD breaking all the trees down - we are avoiding spending $4 per banana but i think i might have to...
What about stuff to go in sandwiches?? does anyone have any ideas? I dont really like tuna and egg makes me feel sick.... Ive been eating cheese sandwiches but i dont think thats very good.
Avocado for sandwiches. It's very good for you during pregnancy. Tinned salmon and jarred mayonnaise is fine, if you can handle fish. Even just a tomato, cheese and avo sandwich would be good for you. If you like mushrooms, maybe cook some up and put them in your sandwiches/dinner as a meat substitute, or any type of chickpeas/beans etc.
I've been in the same boat - mainly eating vegemite toast and trying to take multivitamins every day (when I can handle then). Since I can't bring myself to eat meat at the moment either, I've been making dinner for DH and just eating the vegies, even if I make a stew type thing. Have found mince is ok for me.
Good luck!
I ate shockingly for my first trimester, I could only stomach a very small range of things.
Fresh juices are a life saver, I make a apple, carrot, beetroot, celery, and greens juice most days, get a bit of nutrients into me.
Aside from that, I ate lots of crackers, toast with butter, plain pasta with cheese. If you can try and eat wholemeal or organic sourdough you will get more nutrients than wonderwhite, but its really whatever stays down.
Soups are good if you can stomach them, perhaps see if your mum or friend could cook for you. I took all the ingredients for a meal over to my best friends house and she would cook it, we would both eat it and I would take home the leftovers. Worked well for both of us :) Mum also use to make me a few meals if I asked her for something specific. Soups were good, pumpkin soup, minestrone, chicken noodle. Or stews, vege and/or meal are yum and nutritious.
avocado is a great idea for sandwiches! Also salmon could be a go-er as well..... i dont know why i didnt think of that!!! I think I may get my mum to cook me something. we only have a small flat and the house STINKS if i cook anything in it then i cant go to sleep as it smells so much.
I dont have a juicer but we have an orange tree and ive been having one squeezed orange a day and juices when i go out. thanks guys any other ideas most welcome!!
I'm right there with you MrsPrsh. The only way I can keep the nausea away is to stay full so I'm constantly snacking all day. Now I am so over food and really would prefer not to eat anything. I would also really love a ham, cheese and salad sandwich lol. I've been eating cheese and tomato on crackers and leftovers for lunch (make sure you really nuke it first)
Just found the info on avocado - packed full of folic acid, potassium, vitamin c and.... Drum roll... Vitamin B6, which is in the anti-nausea vitamins! No wonder I feel the best I have after a bowl of guacamole.
yum ham cheese salad sandwich....... i am actually considering nuking some ham then letting it cool and then making a sandwich. do you think that would be ok??

If you buy ham from a reputable butcher and have it sliced fresh off the bone and then eat it the risk is really really really tiny. The big risk with cold meats is ones that have been sitting cut in a deli counter (that is higher than 4 degrees) for a day or two.
Or you could have a toasted ham, tomato and cheese sandwich :)
