Okay, silly question. My DS is almost 6 months old and for the past few days he has been doing this really strange cough, it sounds like a fake, forced cough and his usually smiling when he does it... Can a baby learn to fake cough or is he just discovering new sounds he can make - he does it pretty much all the time... Unless he has a bit of a cough???
me too! apparently its pretty common starting from 5 months or so. they have learnt a new trick! my ds also gives me a cheeky grin!!

Hey Harmony83, lets hope that your *cough* *cough* lil one is just discovering something new, that whenever he makes that sounds he grabs your attention!
Hot, dry heat etc might also make our throat tickles maybe thats his reason!
:)
this is so good to hear. ds started the fake cough when he was five months old. i knew he wasn't getting a cold because there was nothing in the cough at all. i have since learnt that he will use it when he is bored and wants to be picked up or when he is "trying it on" with me - carrying on until he gets my attention. is quite amusing actually. god he has me twisted around his little finger.

Oh yes my DS started the same thing around 5 months, he finds it particularly useful when I'm shopping or talking to DF after work!! You will notice it's actually in the health centre book under their developmental assesment 6-8 months - 'tries to attract attention by cough' - so our little ones are doing just what they should be!!

babies are so adorable with the funny little habits they get into! Libby used to do this, and still does occasionally. She also makes a peculiar grunting noise - and a friend's bub makes this huge noisy intake of breath we have labelled "the death rattle"!!!

eliana did the same fake cough & still does it though in the past month she has started the fake gag - a great sound as you can imagine - the first time i thought she was choking but she also does it with nothing in her mouth - even brings tears to her eyes - have no idea why she feels the need to do this!
Wyatt was the same, he's 10 months and still does it :)

Brianna does a fake cough sometimes to get my attention and she's nearly 9 months. :p
The fake cough is so cute isn't it? My dd has been doing it for a few months now, and usually it is when no one is looking at her or talking to her. I think it is her way of saying "hey look at me everyone!!!" :)
Jack started with the fake cough and then went to sucking in his breath and holding it- but really loudly, like a gasp.
Very interesting when you are queued up at the cash register and everyone thinks your baby is taking its last breath :p
Yep! You've gotta love it!! Eleni is 6 months old and has been doing the fake cough thing for about 4 or 5 days now... I was a little concerned at first - but I'm pretty sure there is NOTHING wrong with her, and it's just an attention-seeking thing... Aren't they so clever?!
Cheers!
