Hi All

My little bubba is about 4 1/2 months old. He has recently dropped a feed through the day so is now only having 4 bottles a day. I offer him 200mls at all four feed, but for al least 2 of them he will only drink between 100 and 150mls.

So, all up he is only getting about 7oo mls per day???

I have just decided to start him on solids (rice cereal) given he seems disinterested in the bottle. The last couple of nights I have even woken him up for a late night feed (he usually sleeps right through) as I have been worried that he hasn't been getting enough??

I would love to hear how much milk babes of similar age are drinking.....either fully formula fed or babes that may have just started tasting solids.

Cheers

Stop waking him at night, if he sleeps right through, he is not hungry. If you keep waking him he will get into a routine of waking in the middle of the night. Bubs will only eat/drink as much as they need. Starting him on solids will only make you feel better about how much he is getting fed. It could also increase his disinterest in the bottle. As long as he is still gaining weight steadily and seems content then let him guide you on this one.

Hi Donna
My bub is nearly 4mths old and has just started sleeping through the night. She has 180ml per feed and has 4-5 feeds a day. For her 5th bottle she usually does not drink it all. The child health nurse told me that babies should have 150ml per kilo.

Example: 150ml * 4.6 = 690 divided by 5 (feeds) = 138ml per bottle
so even if my bub only has 4 bottles in a day she is still getting enough milk for her weight.

Hope this helps.

My baby just turned 5 months and she eats about 800mls a day. As bubbalucy said the average is 150mls per kilo but when I told the Pediatrician that she is not drinking this much, he said that some babies only need 120mls per kilo. Every baby is different, as long as he is gaining weight I would not be worried.

My bub NEVER drank the per kilo ratio amount, he was a tiny drinker, some days 550mls only. At first I was worried but I thought if he is weeing/pooing/happy then maybe he is just a small eater. I agree with not waking- if they are hungry they will wake up and let you know I'm sure!!

He is now 6 months and a bit but still drinks less usually, some days more some days less. Tin says 200ml bottles- hah hah- no way mine is a 100ml boy, cant even trick him cause he just stops when he gets to 100mls- clever little boy

Brooke has her days as well. Somedays she will only drink 100mls .. she weighs 6kg now.
I have noticed she will drink 150mls at night before her big sleep .. she usually sleeps from 7.30pm until 2am and then has another 100 mls and sleeps until 7am and she will easily take another 120mls .. and then just 120 for lunch and afternoon and then 150 again ..

THOUGH somedays there ARE lots of leftover milks.

PJ is 6.5mnths and he's having 4 bottles of around 100 - 150 mls each. He is far more interested in solids. More interested in things he's not yet able to eat ( I have to share most of my food with him) than things he can....

My little girl is 5.5 mths old and most of the time during the day she only drinks 80 - 120 mls.She has 5 - 6 bottles depends if she wakes once or twice at night. She is on solids too but only small amounts 3 times per day.She can't fit in that much.
I was worried about how much she drank but she is only fairly small for her age. She weighs 5.9kg.
Try not to worry every baby is different.

My little boy is 3 months old and just over 7 kgs so he's a big boy. I can't get him to drink more than 80-100mls each feed. Sometimes he wants more 2 hours later and sometimes he will go up to 5 hours if sleeping! He just lets me know when he's hungry and drinks until he's full.

Kaiden is nearly 4 mths and weighs 7.3kgs. He is a hungry boy, having 6-7 feeds daily of between 180ml and 200ml and he still wakes at 4am for a feed! Don't know when he'll finally sleep through, but I am patiently waiting. Dr thinks I'm over feeding him, but I've always thought if he wasn't hungry, he wouldn't eat it. Hope I'm right

Mel, you bubba sounds like mine - he loves his food. I make up bottles of 160ml for his feeds and he usually drains the bottle (although has only been taking 60ml - 100ml at his morning feeds the last couple of days). He wakes every 3 - 3.5 hours overnight for feeds too (apart from waking every hour for re-settling  ). I was giving him a 220ml bottle for his last feed of the night, but it didn't help him sleep any longer so I stopped doing it, although I'm pretty sure that for quite a few of his feeds throughout the day if I offered him 220ml he would take it. He loves his food and I'm worried that he's going to turn into a fatty formula fed baby - 3 months old, 6kg, 60cm.

Hi Larissa, my little boy was born the day before your baby. He is just over 7 kgs so he's a little chubby as well. At least they are happy and healthy! :D I don't think I'll ever get him to drink more than 80-100mls at a time. He suffers from reflux so if he does drink any more than this he just throws it up anyway.
