If we have take away in our house the 2 big boys will have it, but only with an oj and no soft drink.
Bubba bear (who is 14 months old) will still have his usual dinner as i have them pre frozen in the freezer :D
My kids hate soft drink and we usually only have take away 1 every 3 weeks when DF is home from the mines as a treat :)

My kids love fish and chips. Mainly the fish which is great!! My youngest who is 16mths will actually pick off the crumbs or batter and eat only the fish. They only get it about once a month if that. But they occasionally have some hot chips.
My kids hate soft drink too. My Aunty try to give DS1 some when he was about 18mths (much to my horror). He took a sip then he just opened his mouth and let it all run back out!!

 geez now that seems oh so familiar with my kids!
If i've got some hot chips (I'll cool it down for him obviously) i'll offer him one, usually he'll have a taste and then throw it away!
my ds has a few of my chips but no cool drink
Hot chips here aswell occasionally.Thats about it.
She won't be having soft drink either.
with a busy lifestyle ( i know it isnt a good excuse) my son eats take out atleast twice a week. somtimes more.
we try and keep it healthy most of the time...
but he eats everything from pizza, to fish'n'chips, chinese, maccas, subway, pies, kebabs, whatever we drive through to.
ohh and no soft drink either.... but he will drink it if given the chance.
EJ sometimes will have a little taste of what Im having (not soft drink though). Acutually she doesnt seem to like chips - so mainly will have a little bit or burger or chicken or something - I wouldnt give it to her as a whole meal though at pres - its more just a little taste as she always wants what Im having
My son has food allergies so mostly he can't have take-away. He can have chips though and has had them but isn't too fussed on them. I do let him have junk that he is "able" to have like his special sweet biccies and stuff. Poor thing, there is so much he can't have I have to let him have that at least!

DD will eat pizza and chips but that's about it. We have managed to avoid soft drinks but she loves sweets after grandparents gave her sweets against my wishes a long time ago, now she can't get enough.
DS Samuel (Ethan's still too young) has take away generally once a week. He has chips and nuggets usually or popcorn chicken from kfc which he loves !!
He is allowed to have a little soft drink (i am not into denying much, most things in moderation are ok with me..) if we are at home we take his soft drink when he is not looking, tip most of it out and refill with water (like cordial dilution ..) but if we are out its harder and he wants it, he never drinks the whole cup though and its mainly water that he drinks so it doesnt bother me too much.

Not as babies no, they were at least 2.
But they have maccas, kfc or pizza here and there but not often as we don't drive so makes it easier to resist! They usually get a happy meal with nuggets and an oj.

Jesse and Lucas both have takeaway once a week. It's usually fish & chips and we've worked it that Lukey doesn't get chips until he's eaten his piece of fish (the child is a chipaholic!)
If we're at Maccas Lukey (2) will have either orange juice or a choc shake with his burger happy meal and Jesse (5) will have lemonade with a nugget happy meal.
At home Lukey always wants juice but we'll alternate it and/or dilute it with water. For Jesse it's either water or Sprite Zero (no sugar).
Everything in moderation in this house - there's 'all the time' food and 'sometimes' food!

My kids have takeout about once a week, usually when DP is working night shift and i get lazy. They just have Nuggets and chips from maccas sometimes DS1 will have a cheeseburger. I refuse to let them have anything but orange juice though, on very special occassions they can have a sip of mine (but not coke) but that is like once a year lol.

DS loves "cheesegurber"!! But thats about all... he'll eat about half of it & a few fries!! No softdrink though.. & NEVER Coke. I always ask for juice.
Oh & he likes Pizza on the odd occasion that we get it.
My kids all eat junk food but we don't have it very often (apart from fish and chips) but I don't let them have Coke yet (my eldest is 11).
My 9 mth old has bits that are appropriate (ie. what he will eat without choking).

Yeah its interesting what other mum's views are.... DS just has watvever we have as long as he wont choke on it....i spose i probly give him too many sweets and take aways:o but i also do cook weekly its just the weekend we dont worry too much....sometimes i think though u can still cook things at home that arent so good...but i spose its just about finding the balance  thanks for the replies so far and more are derfinately welcome:D
Funny you should ask...we just had takeaway tonight - fish n chips. Andrew generally eats whatever I eat, so I try to restrict my 'naughty' food for when he's asleep or out of sight. The only time he has ever had soft drink is some very heavily diluted lemonade at his grandparents house. Its like a cup of water with just enough lemonade to make him feel like he's having a treat. If you can't be 'treated' at your grandparents house, where can you? :)
All in moderation I say. I'm trying hard to model a healthy relationship with food for him, hard as it is...

This seems to be parents main concern....i thought everyone would have been saying "no junk food, no take away's" but it seems everyone is very quick to mention no softdrink.....
dont get me wrong i fully agree as DS isnt allowed it but on the other hand i dont condem those who do give it either as it is not my descision...just thought id put that out there for anyone who does give softdrink as a treat:o
I'm all for letting Andrew have a little soft drink very occasionally. But never at home...he'd just want it all the time then. If its only when we are out, it's a treat and not seen as a normal thing for him to have at home. I am trying to wean my husband off Coca Cola too, so one day our house will be relatively soft drink free....one day...:fingerscrossed::D
I try not to be a hypocrite...if I am eating something 'junky' in front of Andrew then I have to fully expect that he will want to eat it too. So if he eats the odd naughty thing once in a while, thats ok. Its up to me to limit his exposure to naughty foods while I still can.

Cooper has a maccas happy meal every Friday after playgroup with 3 nuggets, chips and a vanilla shake. He doesn't/hasn't had any soft drink-he does have juice though.
No not even a taste. I won't eat it so why would I let DD? I won't deprive her forever but she needs to be eating fruit and vegies before she gets junk and she only started eating solids two weeks ago (her choice not mine). It will be a few years at least. And no soft drink either...there is none in the house and we don't have it when out.
DP grew up on healthy food only and he is a really good eater, doesn't even like junk food and take away really. I want to hold off with the introduction of junk foods and take away until she is old enough to understand it's a treat.

We have take away once a week too.I try not to let her have too much soft drink but how can i refuse it when we are drinking it,I usually let her have a little bit of lemonade shes not allowed coke unless Grandma gives it to her(*rolls eyes*).She mostly drinks juice or water or coridial just to colour the water.Dd is crazy on chips she loves fish and usually if we have take away gets nuggets.I do find that she much preffers her veggies though(like me) i think i have a vegatarian on my hands oh and she loves pastas.

We have one 'treat' meal a week - generally after DH takes DS to swimming lessons on a weekend and they will bring lunch home as well - something like chicken nuggets and chips.
He's a huge fruit and veg eater though so he normally wants fruit or something after it. He has never tasted softdrink and never wanted to (all good) and has only ever had chocolate about 4 times (thanks Nannas:rolleyes: ) because we don't buy it for home.
It's all moderation - if he wants chicken nuggets at home, he gets home-made ones with steamed carrot sticks instead of chippies.:D

We're not really into take-away too much here - we'll occasionally have fish and chips (preferably somewhere near the beach - it always tastes better), or McDonald's (I love their Tandoori chicken deli roll:thumbsup: ), or a bit of Thai - but DD just really isn't interested in most of it - she'll eat hot chips (hee hee I figure at least it's a vegetable), but won't have a bar of anything else - she likes her home-cooking too!:chef:
I don't like soft drink myself, only DH has diet coke or lift occasionally, and she hasn't yet demanded a taste. Fingers crossed she won't for a while - she really isn't good with sugar, she's like a junkie, and when she "comes down" from a sugar high (eg. after eating iced cupcakes at a friend's DD's birthday party), it's not a pretty sight  , so I want to keep her away from soft drink for as long as possible, and when she does eventually have it, it will be diluted, and only as an occasional event.
yep i do. if we are out ds can get maccas or kfc, (he always picks 3 piece nugget happy meal. if its a take away shop he will always pick fish which i dont mind as i am hopeless at cooking fish

My kids have take-away occasionally, but they hate soft drink (considering I am bit of a diet coke/coke zero addict it is surprising). DS is 4 and we have to take water wherever we go, he doesn't even really like juice. He was sick recently with gastro and was not having anything, so I tired to give him some flat lemonade and he would not be in it!!

I am surprised that so many parents also have a no soft drink policy when fruit juice is just as bad??!! Anything thats processed is not a healthy alternative! Unless the juice is from a piece of fruit you have just squeezed it's just as bad for teeth etc!!
It seems everyone has the message of coke but don't realise the damage juice does!!
Saying this though my DD has take away once a week (sometimes twice if we are on the hop) usually macca's or hot chips and gravy! She does have pizza and kfc as well but maybe once every couple of months. DD also has coke, juice and milkshakes. The coke and juice all get watered down except if we are in the car.
I agree all in moderation, my dd has never been deprived of any type of food and she eats everything we put in front of her.. I know of people who do say no to certain foods and they have a very fussy eater or even the opposite where the child then eats everything in sight!
My mum is a nutritionalist and personal trainer and OMG we grew up in what everyone else called " THE HOUSE OF HEALTH" we hardly had junk at all.. As soon as I moved out with my now dh and seen how he ate I was all for it!! So many different types of softdrink, lollies chips and takeaways!!
I think it's better to teach about what we can eat everyday and what we should keep to moderation, not say no to everything..

This is true with one of my friends...there have been several occasions where her son has gone to a birthday party and vomited on the way home because the sight of all of the 'sometimes foods' has caused him to go into a feral eating frenzy.

If we have take away in our house the 2 big boys will have it, but only with an oj and no soft drink.
OJ is FAR worse then Soft Drink.........For the teeth and unless its "real in a bottle(no added sugar) or freshly squeezed" its not any better for nutritional value compared to soft drink.
DD is allowed to eat anything she wants regardless of what it is as she is extreamly healthy otherwise......She LOVES veggies(even lentils and brussel sprouts) even just plain....LOL She eats seafood/chicken/pork/red meat(in lasanga) OH and I cant forget she is a fruit bat and loves banana smoothies.
She is not a big fan of fried food but will eat chips and nuggets(on occassion) otherwise I get a Macca's or Hungry's salad/baggets/subway seafood/ Charcol roasted chicken with chips or veg and sushi.....oh and she eats the bread pickles and cheese from burgers from the food giants.....LOL
DD is allowed soft drink, flavoured milk, apple juice(she loves it), chocolate, lollies anything and practically everything:o I am not going to deprive her and since she is really healthy I dont see a problem with it....but when she refuses to brush her teeth I refuse to give her sweets.

I had this passing thought as well. One big difference I noticed between NZ and Oz is that the maccas in NZ have different healthy options. All the happy meals are the 1 price and you have a choice of fizzy, juice, milk or water as a drink, burger, nuggets, roll or salad as the main and chips or a piece of fruit. Something Oz has been slow to pick up givin the apparent health crisis here. So parents who would still like to take their kids to maccas without feeding them a greaseball can and the kids can still say I went to maccas on the weekend.
DD1 has takeout if we are caught out and about but mostly just maybe once a month (she has a food intolerance so def a once in a blue moon treat). We tend not to have softdrink in the house but I do allow her to have a small one while out as long as its not coke. If we do go out I have babys food with me.
I agree with the others....moderation is the key!

My sons now eats whatever we do, we have takeaway once a week and he'll eat it, He like pizza and the popcorn chicken that you get from KFC(very handy with my KFC Twister cravings) but will now eat anything but he's not allowed near the fizzy stuff. Just orange juice for him too. As long as he still eats the healthy stuff aswell I'm happy!

NO!!!!!!! its full of artificial sweetners which are far worse then the sugars in regular softdrinks, unless your child is "dieting" then what's the point.
I use to drink them for the taste(and for a change from water/juice/milk) but then it was ruining my health actually making me sick.

It's actually not the 'diet' variety, it just has no sugar.
I was reading something recently by Dr.Greene (children's doctor/expert) and he said that when choosing between the two sugars the lesser 'evil' of the two would be the artificial sweetener.
He also wrote about a study into the effects of juice on children...
Most (parents) were unaware of another downside of fruit juices in children - these empty calories leave children shorter (yet heavier) than their peers. A study published in the journal Pediatrics found that children who drank more than 12 ounces of juice per day became measurably fatter (http://www.drgreene.com/54_13.html) while their height-growth faltered.
To me common sense says that if OJ and soft drink have the same sugar content then im going with the OJ simply because the flavour is a real flavour as opposed to an artificial one. I know though that a lot of OJs (especially ones from KFC and such) would contain preservatives etc. but i just think that the OJ is more real.More so if its a 'Fresh' one.
Dont really like the idea of giving too many artificial foods.

The only reason I have ever heard for a person drinking "sugar free" was for diabetics/dieters/some taste.
I am one who reacts badly to the "P" sweetner and that is what so called Zero Sugar drinks contain....I have to check before I buy anything to make sure it doesnt contain it and everyone was bragging about how "great it tastes"...the zero variety and was going to try it.
Its all the same IMO whether it's diet or sugar free its still got the artificial sweetner. So kids shouldnt be exposed to it there are enough in regular food without drinking it too.....DD has the naturals variety for her "junk"
it still tastes as good but is far better. I may be contradicting myself but I always check the nutritional value, ingrediants and compare it to her current eating habbits before giving her any food...and with take away the level of hygine in the store. As to why I refuse to eat at any pizza shop BUT eagle boys........LOL
Which makes it funny when I drop stuff to my little brother at the pizza shop he works and go to the pizza shop two doors up people give you the weirdest look when you say are you staying with me and DH's place or in town with mom tonight.
Em eats take away, but the first time she did she was over 2.5yrs old! I just never let her have it before then.
Kailah is still FAR too young to have any of that cr@p (I call it that but I still eat it...lol)
ETA~ Em has NEVER had soft drink. She only drinks water milk or very diluted fruit juice.

I am still expecting so I am not speaking on behalf of myself. My used to be friends used to feed her 18 month olf Maccas all day everyday because she couldn't be bothered cooking. Her son Korey still had bottles but thats it, he would have a:

We live 45km from any takeaway places, so it isn't eaten very often here. But Matthew loves nuggest and chips from Maccas, potato and gravy, nuggets and chips from KFC and pizza. He also loves meat pies and sausage rolls. He does have softdrink, but it is 50% water and 50% softdrink.
at the 18th old mark he weighed about 25-30kg. I was shocked when she told me
 Woahh. is that possible?? My ds1 is 2 and a half and weighs just over 10kgs
Friday night is treat night for the children - they are allowed a 3 nugget happy meal with a shake (no fizz or OJ). They eat 1 or 2 nuggets each, about 1/2-2/3 of the chips and lately have been leaving most of the shake.
Very occasionally they are allowed a small amount of lemonade. Never coke.
Their lolly and chocolate intake has been cut way back as well, with those foods being earnt, not just handed out.
If they have pizza, it's homemade.
DS loves chinese rice, so I will buy him a sm container about once a month (I work in Chinatown in Canberra, with the best restaurant right under my office  ).
I agree with everything in moderation - I don't believe in not allowing any foods, but do believe in teaching children about everyday foods and sometimes foods. My 2 are slowly learning that, and I have noticed that they do not gorge themselves on party foods at birthday parties, and are more often than not saying "no thankyou" to the plates full of lollies and taking their place at the plate with the fruit and demolishing that instead.
To each thier own when it comes to feeding their children though, and I make sure that I try to never condemn what others feel is right to feed their own kids. That's their choice. :)

I will also give her some chicken of we have Red Rooster or BBQ chook - she loves it!

My DS has tired most fast foods but he only has a little bit with his normal dinner.
On the VERY odd occasion he's had maccas he'll eat a whole happymeal (He's 19months) with burger OR nuggets.
I don't like him having fast food much coz he's naturally very hypo! He's tried (in small amounts) pizza, hot chips, maccas, KFC (didnt like the chicken), subway (loves it and its a healthier choice), pies (They r too messy for him)
Hes never tried soft drink. As a child I have soft drink maybe once a month (Sometimes twice) and that was till I was about 12 then even if it was in the house I'd rarely drink it. I want DS to grow up trying it but know it's a treat.
DD has the odd macca's, she hasnt had one for about 3 months. She does have hot chips occasionaly when we go out. She only really eats lollies and sweets and childrens parties. She has never has KFC or any other fast food i don't think.
I think its completely okay in moderation.

he has either a burger or nuggets from red rooster and chips and the juice... however the other day i forgot his drink and i said he could have a sip of my coke... he sucked it up like a vaccuum  but that is the only time he will ever have it till he is older and then will have 1/2 a glass with dinner...
he only weighs 10 kgs at 18 months so i dont think i have to worry about him getting fat from a takeaway meal every so often

I was reading 'littlekids' magazine and it had a McDonalds ad for a Pasta Zoo meal for kids which is little filled pasta animal shapes (like little ravioli), sauce and a milk drink.
Has anyone seen this out as yet? Still not perfect but perhaps a healthier alternative for a fast food day.

DD gets a bite of something I'm eating (otherwise she screams blue murder!) and will get a few chips here and there if we're eating them.
Otherwise, the only "take-away" she gets, are freshly-made sandwiches on wholemeal bread!
I'm not opposed to take-away...but she's really too young (14-months-old) to down anything from maccas or whatever. As soon as they bring out the pasta happy meals, she might get that occassionally.
I want her to be healthy - I'm not healthy at all, and although that makes me a hypocrite, I'd rather be a hypocrite than have her go through the same weight-related problems I have.
my daughter loves everything. try to avoid soft drinks. but she may have an occasional taste of our juice (usually watered down ie put in her bottle of water just a dash). she loves pizza, chips (macdonalds, chicken treat, hj's), hamburgers (but not that keen on them), chicken nuggets or chicken twists (from chicken treat). we normally get takeaway once a week on a thurs night late night shopping or sat night after church and thats when we got to a chinese rest with my parents and she has some of our noodles or chicken rice or whatever we eat. normally we are vey healthy here. I usually make dinner, make my own pizzas (pizza base too), my own crumbed fish etc...
lately i have been making my own chicken nuggets. chicken tenderloins dipped in flour and little bit of bread crumbs either shallowed fried or oven baked. she gets mashed potato which is home made. either boiled potato with milk and some mayonise and little bit of butter or i put a potato in the microwave to make it hot potato and then mash and feed her she loves it.
I agree with SassyMummy, considering Australia has an obesity problem the earlier we can teach our kids about healthy options the better. As they get older they'll eat more of what they want, especially when they're out of our sight (birthday parties, swapping things at school  friends houses, etc) so I figure while I can still control their dietry needs it'll be homemade meals all the way!
My sister told her daughter that dried fruit were lollies, so whenever she asked for treats she was given fruit and loved it! Natural sugar is a much better alternative.
DS 15 months loves hot chips. But he only ever eats two or three, he has a tiny appetite.
That is very rare that he gets them though. Only as an occasional treat.
I dont think there is anything wrong with Takeaway, so long as its in moderation.

DS is 2 years and 4 months and probably has had macca's chips on two or three
occassions in the last 4 months I think..
I don't think that it's an issue as the emphasis here in our house is on healthy eating (he doesn't know that white breads, lollies, fizzy drink etc even exists) because, like Holly was saying, they'll get that when they're older and out of our sight anyway. Might as well do the best I can now. A drink to him is nothing but milk or water and all bread to him is brown with yummy grains that he loves to pick out and eat.
Some of his snacks include walnuts (they seem the safest of all nuts, not splintery iykwim), dried fruit (banana chips, dried apple, pawpaw), sultanas, rice cakes and wholemeal cruskits (in case others were looking for ideas)

Harriet is 14mths old and has never had McDonalds in her life (we have it on a life-ban). She has had 2 hot potato chips and that is it for "junk" food. If we go out to a restaurant we offer her carrot or capsicum from our salad/vegies. We also take along packs of cooked spiral pasta, fresh peas and her latest favourite Cheerio cereal. If we have takeaway it is normally something like Subway so she can have some of the bread to chew on. Never has soft drink however she does get a mouthfull of milkshake probably once a month. We don't tend to eat a lot of takeaway - we even make our own pizza at home. My nephew is 1mth younger and he has whatever they are having. I think it is all a personal choice. My DH is a healthy food nut so we don't tend to have any "bad" (in his mind) things in the house.
DS (6 months old) has had pizza  Before he started on solids we went to a friends house for the night and he gave DS the crust  . He was then up at 4am with pains in the belly which was followed by an eczema outbreak. So it will be a LONG time before he has take away again!!!! Which may be hard as i LURVE my take away! Oh well it will be good for me i guess!! Didnt think of diluting soft drink, that is a great idea! Will have to remember it when the time comes!

Rachel's first ever "real food" meal was a takeaway, from Red Rooster.
I don't think that totally counts as junk food, though, since she mostly just ate the peas!
At the moment we generally have something from the chip shop for lunch twice a week, usually chips, dim sims and pizza. I'm pretty comfortable with that as their "junk food" quota - specially considering that mostly what's wrong with it for an adult is the high fat levels, and little kids need their fat.
(and since Rachel's most-requested afternoon-tea snack at the moment is a couple of raw carrots, I'm feeling pretty good about her diet balance in general! :))

My little one will only ever get a hot chip every know and then but only if we're having them. DP and I are pretty strict when it comes to food. Only the best will do. Not into giving soft drinks or processed foods. Too many preservatives and additives. Organic is the way to go!

It tastes pretty bad, but he seems to like it a lot.
