View Full Version : How frequent to change MCN?
My new born is 6 weeks old and yesterday I put on the MCN on him.
Within 3 hours, I ended up changing 3 MCN because he did 2 poos and wet his nappy.
I am wondering if I should be changing the MCN as soon as they get wet or soil? The inner does not look like it can absorb a lot of pee or keep the poo in for a long time.
I ended up having to keep checking baby for wet and soiled MCN.
Is this how it works?
I do not have that many MCN for frequent change (3 in 3 hours! is too much).
What's the strategy with using MCN?

That's why I don't use them till bub is a bit bigger as she poos every hour and every feed lol!
I think that is the general idea though... The nappies (if new) will reach max absorbancy after about 8 washes :)

Are u breastfeeding your baby? Will the poo get lesser as they grow up?

I change as soon as they poo regardless of if they are wearing a sposie or cloth. If theres no poo I just change after a feed. DS is 3.5 months and feeds about 3 hourly in the day.
I have 2 in cloth and I wash everyday to keep up with the amount of nappies we go through. I reckon I change over 80 nappies a week and I couldnt imagine having to buy that many sposies

Regardless of what nappies you use you should change immediately after a poo. If they don't poo I would be changing every 2 hours for wees. What nappies do you have?

They should be fairly absorbent. Did you prewash them several times before use? As PP mentioned they take a few washes to reach max absorbency. Babies go through roughly 12 nappies a day tho, but don't worry, you'll build your stash.

If I don't change DD's pooey nappy straight away, it gives her the worst nappy rash
Definitely need to prewash them several times to up the absorbancy. After about 6-8 weeks DD's poo settled down a fair bit. She did go through a phase of pooing after every feed, but then settled to one a day, and none at night!
you really should change a child's nappy as soon as they poo regardless of whether its cloth or not. Faeces is quite irritating on the skin and can cause huge nappy rash probs if left on.
I change Julian's nappy about every 3-4 hours and Lysander's every 2 or as soon as he poos.
Sander gets really bad nappy rash, so I prefer to change him more often, just so I know he's fresh and clean.
And Julian is almost toilet training, so he doesn't wet so much, he just does a huge wee every few hours... like we do.
I have little ripples mcn and with two boosters I change dd at feed times every four hours. Her bum is quite dry even though the inserts are wet. The little ripples are in expensive too I bright 20 for $77! And they work too just not on children under 4.5kgs.
Look the lliitle ripples up for cheap mcns and very fast delivery.
For a poo nappy I change it as soon as I notice it.

I can totally relate. It's insane how many times a day (and night) they go. Sometimes while I was changing my newborn, he would do another poop right there and then and soil the nappy even before it was fully on him.
I think you just have to accept that newborns just need to be changed that frequently throughout the day (even if it means twice or thrice in a row) whether you're using cloth or disposables.
For me at that stage, as much as I wanted to I did not use cloth on my baby full time. Sometimes it was just too much plus I was still building up my stash anyway.
But the frequency (particularly with the poop) will definitely ease down as their bowel movements start to regulate and settle down.
For now if you want to boost absorbency, you can put an extra insert, even if it's just a folded up washcloth or you can buy standalone inserts online.
If you're determined to use cloth as much as possible without blowing your budget in one go, you might consider terry/muslin flats or prefolds. You can boost your stash at a fraction of the cost of MCNs and they will do fine for quick fixes at home when you're running into a back-to-back poop/pee marathon from bub. They also dry quickly so you can have them back in circulation in your stash very quickly.
