:) Hey Guys,
Now I am sure that you all probably know this but I had no idea and only found out today. Not that I am pregnant my little man is 9 months old but it was so serious and when I fould it out I could not just leave it and not pass it on.
When you are pregnant DO NOT TAKE NEUROFAN !!!! (Sp?). I know it says it on the box. Avoid while pregnant and definately not in the last trimester. BUT THIS IS SERIOUS. Neurofan (and I really am not sure on the spelling as I am allergic and so never keep any), has a chemical in it that is similar to that produced at birth by bubs to trigger and close/open the valve to their lungs so that they can breath. If this is taken during pregnancy it can cause (and we are talking quite often) this valve to open and the bub to die as they are not yet born.
I know most people will prob know ... but I was explained it all by a dr today ... talking about a whole different topic but got onto it and I thought I would just hate for someone out there to have a headache and reach for one without knowing. So warning to you all - STICK WITH PANADOL !!!! IT IS 100% SAFE !!!!
Good luck to you all on your safe arrival when the time is right.
Suzie

This issue extends to all aspirin products- I recall my GP explaining this.

I've been told that really the only safe drug during pregnancy is paracetamol.

Other drugs can be prescribed but the Doctors have to weight up the risk vs benefit.

However, I'd imagine you must still be able to take Ventolin puffers etc if you were feeling wheezy. I must ask my GP about this next time I see her.

That is a good warning.. if you are ever in doubt, call and speak to the pharmacist at your local chemist.. they are usually very helpful

Where do i start?

I was down with flu bug really bad in 2004 Boxing Day until towards the end of the year 2005. With all the chaotics time moving up frm Vic. then into the rental house, had all the family in laws which coincided with their travelling plans from UK, i really had no idea that i was pregnant.

So, when things had calmed down, we went to Hervey Bay to cool off. with bro in law n his mate. I remembered having so bad flu, and always took in Neurofen and then pop in that Encihanea(spell?) when Neurofen failed to work.

Just when I told hubby that I have to see the GP there and get anti biotics, he said better wait abit longer incase i m pregnant. Then only it hit me.

The minute we reached home, stopped by the chemist and get a pregnancy stick. Bingo! I was pregnant.

Fixed an appt. with Len Yared for the usual 12weeks check after the GP positive check. I asked him, that I hv taken Neurofen, will this do anything harm to my pregnancy, he said NO!

Needless to say....12 weeks scan turned out to be blighted ovum.

Oh, well, this happened with reasons I belive. My body telling if i did go all the way, my baby would be probably not healthy.

WOW... I never knew that Suzie - so thank you so much for posting. It's easy to 'forget' that I'm pregnant as I go about my day to day stuff so I'm just the kind of person who would take something for a headache and only later think 'oh, I wonder if that was a good idea!'

And Sweetvanilla - I'm sorry to hear about your loss. :( Good to know about the nurofen but it could have been a combination of a number of factors so I hope you don't ever blame yourself. Many first pregnancies regrettably end that way and as someone said to me 'It's very difficult to harm a healthy pregnancy and equally difficult to sustain an unhealthy one'.. mind you, I will still be staying away from Nurofen!

Well, I was also told not to take panadol either during pregnancy because in lab animals it can damage the reproductive system. It would be awful for your child not to be able to have children because you took panadol while pregnant. Basically my doctor said if you get sick, unless it is life threatening then don't take anything - just suffer through it. Great so long as you aren't the one doing it!

nicky47 - could you please explain the aspirin thing as well? I have a blood clot disorder and my doctor has told me to take aspirin as a precaution, though i haven't yet.

the aspirin thing... rather than give you my now hazy memory of what I was told have a look at this link- I do remember being told that it is linked to interference with a valve for the lungs that is closed whilst in-utero and can prevent it opening after the birth.

aspirin during preg (http://www.babycentre.com/expert/pregnancy/isitsafe/1357403.html)

But as always speak to your doctor if concerned

Hi,
As to asprin. IF you are taking Asprin for a blood clotting disorder you are normally on a lower does then the asprin that the normal person grabs for a head ache. For blood clotting the doseage is 100-200mg per day ... I am on 100-150 which is used to thin the blood out as I have very high platlette counts. IF YOU ARE TAKING ASPRIN FOR A BLOOD CLOTTING CONDITION - DO NOT STOP - It can be very dangerous not only to your health but also bubs. Basicly they use asprin to thin your blood to reduce the risks of blood clots etc. When a woman is pregnant and just after birth there is already an increased risk so it is important if you are prescribed this then take it. A normal asprin that you buy for a headache is between 300 and 500mg so is a huge difference.
If you are pregnant or wanting to become pregnant some doctors will tell you it is TOO high risk with blood clotting disorders. This is a MYTH !!!! It is perfectly safe to take asprin at a maintenance dose during the first two trimesters of a pregnancy and they will watch you during the third and may decrease the dose to avoid problems. It may just be as simple in the last trimester to get a cbc done regularly and check for your blood status and also a D dimer to check for blood clots.
I know in Australia Panadol and Paracetemol are perfectly safe to take during pregnancy including high risk pregnancy.

From what I've heard nurofen is evil.....especially the nurofen for kids its not good for their developing bones or was it brains something like that my doc told me too.
Its scary when you here about these things you'd think these products wouldnt be allowed, that our standards in Australia would be higher
