My 21mnth old son has been having one daytime nap for about two hours from about 1pm -3pm each day and then going to bed at 7pm-6am . He has always been good at getting to sleep. The past week when I put him to sleep at night he won't actually fall asleep until about 8:30 or in the case of last night about 9:30. Then today he refused to have a daytime sleep. Does anyone think its possible he is trying to get rid of the daytime nap and just doesn't need the nap ( I certainly need him to have the nap). I think the daytime nap may have been to much sleep for him and kept him from getting to sleep properly at night. Should I just let him go without napping?

The exact same thing is happening to me at the moment with my son. He is almost 18mths and no matter what i do he just wont go to sleep during the day. I think its cause he's not having enough stimulation during the morning to knock him out after lunch. Im going to start doing a lot more during the morning to see if that helps.
at 21 months i think that he still needs quiet time. put him in his room and if he goes to sleep only let him have an hour. My 31/2 year old stopped at 26 months and she is allowed to have her quiet time on the couch during the week but must go to her bedroom on the weekends ( time out for both mum and dad ). this has only been the last three months prior to this she went to her room and had to stay there for an hour and a half.
good luck

Same thing happened to my son. We would put him to bed at 7 and he wouldn't go to sleep for an hour or more. So I started to let him pick 4 or 5 books and he gets to read for half and hour before the light goes out. This helps to wind him down and he gets a clear message that it is nearly sleep time. He is not really tired at 7pm, but that's when I want him to be in his room. We are finding that this is really working well. He still has 2 to 3 hours of sleep after lunch, but anymore than that and it is a real battle for bedtime. Hope this helps!:)
