View Full Version : *Spin off* Did your child contract a 'vaccine preventable' disease??

Firstly id like to say this is out of pure curiousity and id appreciate honest answers. For the record I dont vaccinate my children but id like to be very clear that this is not a thread to start a debate or judge anyone in anyway!!
A recent thread got me thinking about who exactly contracts these 'vaccine preventable' diseases. Are they children who are NOT vaccinated, ARE vaccinated or simply too young to be vaccinated (according to the Australian vaccination schedual).
So my question is...Did you child (or yourself for that matter) contract one of these diseases, were they vaccinated for it and how old were they??
My DD is 2.5, had NO vaccinations and had NOT had any of these diseases (in fact has barely been sick at all). My DS is 6 months and had NO vaccinations and also has not had any diseases (he has had ONE cold since he was born!!)
Im asking BOTH pro-vaxxers and anti-vaxxers and like i say, would appreciate both sides and honest answers!

When my sister was a baby, my other sister was a toddler and I was about 7, we all got whooping cough. My youngest sister had it very seriously and was hospitalised. All of us had been vaccinated.

My DD's have both been vaxxed for whooping cough and have both been tested for it (although they didn't have it at that time...their vax status didn't have them in the clear). DD1 was 3 years and 2 months, DD2 was 16 months.
DS never had anything more than colds and one bout of Gastro where he threw up twice and had three bouts of diarrhoea. Who knows if it was rotavirus or not, he wasn't tested for it because I didn't take him to the doctor and I also didn't vaccinate him for it.
Myself personally was vaccinated for everything as a baby. I had Rubella before I could be immunised, measles when I was 8 (wasn't sick, just had the rash and had to have a week off school....that same week another class mate was off with the measles. We discovered our rashes together and she was also immunised). Not vaccinated for the chicken pox because it didn't exist and had a mild dose of that at 20 years old.
Good thread OP!
My children are fully vaxxed and have never had a VPD.
I was partly vaxxed and was not vaccinated against whooping cough (well I was but didn't realise that it wanes over time) chickenpox or rubella and I contracted all three as an adult. The rubella when I was pregnant.

Nope. I have had CP and whooping cough and vaccinated against whooping cough but my dd didn't get it even though we bedshare and she was not vaccinated against it.

My daughter is 20 months old and all her vaccinations are up to date. She's never contracted a vaccine preventable disease.
She's never had a cold either but one has nothing to do with the other.
Myself, I'm fully vaccinated and up to date. I've never had a vaccine preventable disease. I haven't had a cold or any sort of illness in years but that has nothing to do with vaccines either.

I had the vax for measles and mumps I think, then rubella at high-school, not sure if I had the vax (or if it was available before then)
I had chicken pox when I was 2 (no vaccine 'back in the olden days, LOL), same time as my older sisters, and half the kids at their school. I don't remember it at all, my sis got a scar from scratching on her belly that got huge and looked funny when it expanded in pregnancy.
My brother got CP at 17, he was sick as a dog, covered in spots and hibernated for the week. He caught it of my nieces who both had it.
A friend who had CP when we were in primary school passed it onto her father - it was the 9th time he had it - he wasn't usually sick, or immunio-compromised, there is just something about him and CP where the immunity doesn't stick, which is rare apparently.
At a christmas party last year my twins were playing with lots of kids, in a little paddling pool with another set of twins and their older sis - they all came out with CP the following week, as did 10 other kids at the same party - some were vaxxed, some not. They were 18months and not vaxxed, my older 2 kids were there too, 3.5 and 5.5 both vaxxed and none of my kids got it.

I was fully immunised as a child and had measles at 6. I was off school for a week but I wasn't too sick.
I had chickenpox last year and was so so sick. I thought I had already had it but turns out I had no immunity to it. Had I known I would have been immunised, and it may not have been so bad.
I plan to immunise my kids.

Just thought id add...I was fully immunised as a child and i contracted mumps (although not bad i think). My Brother was also fully immunised and he got mumps too plus chicken pox(although there was no vaccine for that then) terribly (i never got it even though i was living with him...in fact sharing a room)

My DS had his 1st Chicken Pox Vacc but we hadnt got around to having his booster at 4yrs.
He contracted Chicken Pox at 4yrs 3mths ...Saying that, I dont think they claim the vaccinne is 100% affective.
DS2 was 5 weeks old when he got Chicken Pox - had not been vacc :(
DD2 - had her first Chicken Pox vacc 2 mths before the boys got their chicken Pox and she did not get it

My son got a seriously bad dose of chicken pox when he was 8 months old (too young for vaccination), believed to be caught from his 9 year old cousin (who was vaccinated and had a mild dose), and my daughter had an extremely mild dose of chicken pox (3 years and vaccinated) shortly thereafter.
My ds2 contracted whooping cough at 1.5 weeks of age. We spent 3 weeks in hospital which was an hour from our home. After I had him and we came home and within a few days he started having these gagging episodes and he would turn blue. I would have to breathe in his face to get him to start breathing again. This went on for a few hours until we had a previously scheduled visit from the community nurse. We took him to our local hospital n spent the night in high dependency. The next day we were transferred. I have never been so scared in my life. Like I said we spent 3 weeks in hospital until he started coping without oxygen n putting on weight. It took him 4 weeks to get back to his birth weight.
I have been immunised including the booster and so has my dh. Our ds1 was immunised to the schedule.
I have had measles, chicken pox and shingles despite being fully immunised.
My 4 year old and 2 year old and are unvaxxed and have never had a VPD.

My 3 year old is vaccinated and has never contracted a VPD.
When I was a baby a lot of the vaccines either didn't exist or weren't routine for young babies.
In my first year of life (unvaccinated for the the above reasons), I contracted measles, rubella, mumps and chicken pox. I gather it was quite common for children to contract most of those diseases back then. I didn't suffer any complications but I remember my brother getting very ill with chicken pox.
My son will be 3 in July and has not had the MMR or the chicken pox vaccine.
He caught chicken pox from day care around Christmas last year. He had a very mild case, was not sick at all, just had the spots and had to be off day care for a few days.
The dr and day care workers were surprised that his case was so mild given that he had not been vaccinated.

My DS(almost 3) has been vaxxed til 12 months, and DD(6months) is not vaxx and have never had any VPD. I myself have only had CP as a child, which there was no vax for back then. Still shocked over the fact there is now a CP vax.

Yes, whooping cough.
DS1 and DS2 are vaxxed as per the schedule and neither have had a VPD.
DS3 is delayed vaxxed (started them at 8ish mnths) and has never had a VPD.
I was vaxxed to schedule as a child and had rubella and chicken pox.
eta - and I had a nasty case of Shingles a few years ago and thought I was going to die lol.. it was awful.

regardless of vax..it is actually a good thing for your little one to be sick with little illness whilst they are young...so saying your 2.5 year old has barely been sick at all..isn't a great thing....
I was sick a lot as my dad would bring home all sorts of bugs from the hospital....never anything serious though..I was full vax...I hardly get sick now as a adult..

I have current rubella "immunity" (according to BT) from vax after DS was born, and I have been partially vaxxed for CP as a teen. I *think* I had DTaP as an infant/child, and a booster in late primary. I *think* I recieved MMR in late primary too, but not as an infant/young child, and I had the meningococcol shot in yr 8 with a (unreported) bad reaction. I have never had a VPD.
Whoops, I read this as being about us, lol...DS is partially vaxxed and hasn't had a VPD.

My ds is fully vaxed and he hasn't caught any disease's he has had a couple of cold's but that's nothing really he is young and i know he will catch a lot more colds.
We HAVE to vaccinate ds has he has no immune system what so ever and he cannot control anything like stress levels, temperature, blood sugar levels, so if he did catch one of those disease's it could become life threatening so it's best to be safe then sorry with him and after his vax's he has never caught anything he has had a fever after his 2 month one's but with some panadol he was fine.
Ds is 3 and up to date with all vaccines. he hasn't caught any of the vaccine prev. Diseases. he catches colds sometimes or whatever eg gastro but that's not really relevant. He gets sick the "normal" amount, and not so much now that he has had a few sick times. I was vaxed against everything that was available at the time, and the one thing I wasn't vaxed for I caught, chicken pox, and I got it very badly. Still have some nasty scars. I am resistant to the rubella vaccine and have been done a number of times but it never lasts. I have never caught rubella

I have severe allergies to some of the vaccine components so under the strict guidance of my peadiatrician i was vaxxed selectively in small segmented doses on a delayed schedule.
I am not able to have the whooping cough vax (several others i cant have either)
My older siblings were all fully vaxxed on time.
I caught whooping cough at around 5mths, from my 7yo vaxxed sister. She was hospitalised and nearly died from it. I recovered very quickly within 2wks at home.
That same sister caught chicken pox at 9yrs (no vax back then) and recovered at home within 2wks. None of the rest of us caught it from her, despite me and our other sister sharing a room with her.
I was vaxxed for measles at age 11. I caught it at school about 6mths after my vax. Didnt suffer greatly, just stayed home for a week with a high temp & spots.
I have never had a flu shot, and the year before last i caught the flu for the first time in my life (dont know where from). Last year i was exposed to the flu again at work but i didnt catch it.
At new years this year (while i was approx 3wks preg) i was exposed to CP by our friends' 13yo daughter (the girl was vaxxed against CP) we were in contact with her for a week while we all shared a holiday house. None of us caught CP from her.
I draw no conclusions from the above cases. I believe despite my allergies, i have a very strong immune system (certainly much stronger than my sister). I dont tend to scarr; when i cut myself its usually totally healed up in 24-48hrs; i dont often catch colds or viruses. And i'm not overly paranoid about germs - i dont use antibac hand washes or anything like that. Just good old soap. In fact i'll happily touch the hand rail of a shopping centre escalator and then eat food - ooh yeah i live life on the edge man! Lol
My DD has displayed a similarly strong immune system, and coincidentally she has some of the same allergies too. I have chosen to be selective of her vaxxes due to the reaction risk and to date she has had MMR and tetanus only. She is 3yrs. I am comfortable in holding off on her vaxxes, and in fact the more i learn about them, the more anti-vax i become. I am seriously considering not vaxxing our next bub at all. I dont believe vaxxes cause autism, but i am becoming very sceptical of their safety.

I personally have had Whooping cough (too young to be vaccinated) and severe chicken pox (vaccine didnt exist 'in my day')
The varicella vaxx was put onto the schedule after DD1 had passed the age, so she was never vaxxed against it. I had the option to pay and have it done, but figured it was 'just' chickenpox, so didn't bother.
DS1 was vaxxed against it at 18mths.
When DD1 had just turned 5 she came down with chickenpox. It was awful. She had them everywhere you can possibly imagine and was in extreme agony. Couldn't even go to the toilet without screaming in pain  DD2 was 4 months old and therefore was not old enough to be vaxxed for it.
I left DD1 with my DH and went to stay with my mum for a week to try and protect my new baby. It didn't help. At 4 months old my baby girl got chickenpox. It was a nightmare. Both my girls still have scars all over their bodies from it. DS1 who was vaxxed, and who stayed home with DH and DD1, didn't get a single blemish. DS2 has now come along and I had him covered for it dead on 18mths. I never want to experience it again.
And as for the saying that breastfeeding passes on the mothers antibodies - not true in our case! I had chickenpox as a child and have had blood tests which show natural immunity, DD2 was fully BF and was covered head to toe in pox!

Both kids are vaxxed, 2.5 and 9 months. No vaccine preventable illnesses for either.
They seem to be constantly sick with colds, but that's neither here nor there... (ds barely ever got sick before dd came along)
I was vaxxed, and never had anything other than chicken pox, which I've had severely 4 times and mildly once. I seem too be that rare person who cannot develop immunity. Unsure whether I'm old enough to have been vaxxed for it (born in 84).

Had rubella as a child. Was never vaccinated for it. Never had another rubella shot. And apparently have immunity according to bloods.

Chicken pox but it wasn't bad, just a low grade fever and a few spots. Mean while her father who wasn't immunized ended up in hospital because of it, he looked like he was dying, out of control fever and his whole body was in puss then it started bleeding I swear he looked like he had Ebola! Had to have 2 weeks of work and was on strong pain med. Still has the scars.

I'll let you know after midday sometime!
Taking my fully-vaccinated daughter of nearly 6-years-old to the dr to find out wtf these spots are on her torso. Could quite possibly be something she was supposed to be vaccinated against.

DS got measles before he was able to be immunized for it (10months) and was so sick that he had to be hospitalized for two weeks in quarantine.
Both kids - 11 and 14yrs are up to date on all vaccinations and haven't caught any of the preventible diseases with the exception of the one above :)

No chicken pox vaccine back in the day, but only got a mild dose, unlike my poor brothers who suffered a great deal.
Can't really remember anything else. Vague recollections of my mother's satisfaction when my brothers got the mumps.....
DD in child care: about a third of the kids came down with chicken pox, and I freaked. I thought these kids were supposed to be vaccinated!
Well, it turns out that they HAD been vaccinated, but, yes, the vaccine is not 100% effective.
To say the least.
Yes. My son caught chicken pox off my neighbour's child the day before she came out in spots.
His eczema got quite bad during it & he also got a chest infection & bronchitis & ended up having an xray to rule out pneumonia then was put on antibiotics & steroids. He was sick for weeks. It was all related to the chicken pox. It was a horrible few weeks. He was 15 months old at the time so too young for the vax.
The girl who gave him the CP had not been vaccinated nor had her sister who is the one she caught it off. Her mother had thought she wouldn't get it because she'd already had it once before but she got a much worse case the second time around.

Ds and dd have both been vaxed and never had VPD. I was unvaxed as a child. Chick pox vaccine wasn't around when I was a kid and I remember having that pretty bad and almost every kid I know caught it at some stage, I still have a few scars. My dh's mum put all 3 of her boys in the bath together when one of them caught it so they'd all have it at the same time... I almost choked when she told me... I also had rubella and a mild form of TB which I contracted from drinking unpasterized milk as a kid.
As an adult I've been regularly vaxxed with pretty much every immunization ever invented as I was a flight attendant and regulary flew to 3rd world countries where disease was rife. I've seen first hand the devastation VPD can do in parts of africa, middle east and asia. I researched a lot before my decision as both my babies were sick with allergies and I didn't want to harm them however I felt that it was in their best interest though I did delay some and separate others because they were sick.
I vax my children as part of my obligation to my children and to protect the wider community, especially the babies, sick, elderly and those that can't or choose not to be immunized for medical or personal reasons.
when my son was 6 weeks old, he had his first lot of immunisations (they were doing them earlier because of the WC scare) 3 days later we ended up in hospital with WC and swine flu, we were quarentined and he almost died.
we delayed vaxxing after that and he hasnt had vaccine preventable diseases, (recently caught up on the rest of the vaxes) and he is fine.

Myself and my children are all fully vaxed. None have ever had a vpd. We were all exposed to chicken pox And whooping cough but none of us got it.
Nope, none of mine have ever caught any of the VPD's. They are 10, 8, 6 and 4, and I am a selective/delay/non-vaxxer.
