View Full Version : Ipswich Hospital and VBAC

Just thought I'd share that this morning, I called Ipwich hospital to ask about their stance on VBAC.
I was informed by "Debbie" in maternity that they are VERY happy to provide a VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarean - refers to ONE prior c-section) birth, but are less keen on a VBA2C (vaginal birth after 2 caesareans).
In case anyone in the Ipswich region is considering a VBAC - there you go. It sounds like Ipswich is willing to help if you've only had 1 prior c-sec.

:yelclap: to Ipswich. I really can't fault my birth there at all.
I believe that Ipswich is one of the better maternity hospitals in the SE area. :D My SIL works there and had 2 of her 3 there - she wouldn't go there if she dind't think everything was done properly, right?.. and if it weren't for my dad living all the way up at D-Bay I'd probably had had Cobey there.

I had DD at Ipswich hospital too, and despite the fact that I feel ripped off because I ended up with a c-section, I DO think its a great hospital maternity-wise (never been to any other parts of it).
In fact, I was born there too! (In 1986!).
There were a FEW mean middies (mostly the old cranky ones on night duty), but most were VERY lovely, especially a student middie who helped me out SO MUCH after DD's arrival. She did SO MUCH for me. Another one was in the "birthing suite" part...she was funny, and tried to cheer me up when I found out I had to have a c-sec.
I am VERY HAPPY that they're pro-vbac...because I had a good time there, and wouldn't have wanted to have gone elsewhere for my next birth.
The only thing I can fault is the food - gross. But it's not too bad - well, the SANDWICHES are okay anyway (if not, I just sent people to the kiosk for me...lol).

Agreed about the food. It was so bad I had DP bring me in food and drinks everyday. I took home a pile of biscuits for my biscuit jar too.
The midwifes were so good about breastfeeding to me. They stayed patiently with me day after day - and advised against me being discharged until I was confident enough to go on my own, even after a complications free VB. They booked me into the local breastfeeding clinic before I left hospital as well.

I had 4 of my 6 children at Ipswich hospital and I can't fault them. I also had one of the so called grumpy midwives and found her just fine. She knew exactly what was going on and was excellent. I also had one that I thought during my ante natel care might be "mean" but when I got her she was blunt but Just fine. When my sone got stuck at the shoulders and was not looking too good she put me in a position that I never thought I could do and got him out. Obviously a very experienced lady. I love Ipswich maternity and Birth suites. Having no. 3, 4, 5, and 6 they let me do whatever I wanted.

I had my last bub at Ipswich hospital - they were good but I did have a run in with Ms. Cranky Pants when I went into premature labour at 36 weeks. She was bloody revolting and soo nasty! Fortunately, the contractions stopped so I checked out of hospital and got a motel room around the corner because I didn't want the old bag anywhere near me.
I wasn't there long enough to eat the food - Shine was born at 7.30pm and I left about 8am the next day.
My little brother will hopefully be VBACed at Ippy hospital in January - it's great to hear that they are supportive of vbac because my Dad's partner is quite keen to give birth vaginally.

They don't do water births at Ipswich - they pull the plug in the birth suite.
I did the antenatal classes and loved them. A physiotherapist talks about exercises, you find out about pain relief and take a tour of the birth suite. One of the girls from my class was in the same ward as me, and it was nice to see a familar face.

When I went to the antenatal classes the midwife told us that quite a few 'accidental' water births had occured there. It just depends on which midwife you get and if they are happy to allow this to happen. Goodluck!

hmm :detective: that is good to know. I'm aiming for a water birth next time and didn't want to have to drive to Brisbane whilst in labour

expect big changes at Ipswich Hospital next year!! It will be the first year of the new Bachelor of Midwifery at UQ at Ipswich, so with the Ipswich hospital being one of their main teaching hospitals, I would say they will be exploring greater options with births!!

I'll be doing that particular degree in 2007 at Ippy. :yelclap: . I just have to do a science subject next year to meet the pre reqs and I'm in. Yay, can't wait.

Where are you doing your science subject - I'm enrolled at UQ already but doing an arts degree? I'm not sure where to do the pre-requisites. I would love to do the course there!
