Okay after not having any luck finding some cheap super absorbant washable breastpads I have decided to try and make some. I have some terry here but am wondering how many layers I would need to make them useful for the early days of feeding, also I have some offcuts of pul here do you think it would be a good idea to back it with pul?

What is pul?

Good idea to make your own. I never even thought of it. Are you thinking of doing circles and overlocking the edges?

For the early days of feeding, I would guesstimate about 2-3 layers?? I suppose it would depend on your flow? I know I was leaking everywhere for a few weeks.
Good ldea to back them with PUL.

the only problem with Pul would be that it might be slippery IYKWIM. I have some hemp ones which are backed with fleece to keep the moisture in, but I don't know how that stuff works :p

Ok. So Im now assuming Pul is a type of plastic.

It's a breathable type of plastic;)

Seekrit - yeah I was thinking that too about the pad slipping.

I found conventional breast pads to be bulky and obvious. If you have a look at the mothersdirect.com.au website they have a product called "lilypadz". These are fantastic and you can use them over and over again. You can even wear them while swimming. They are a little expensive but if you are going to use them for 6months to a year then they work out really cheap. Hope this helps you.

I have heard of Lilypadz but have also heard that they are useless till your milk settles down. Is that right?

OM - I know of several WAHMs who make hemp breast pads - backed with fleece (like what seekrit has) - I assume its two layers of fleece on the outer .. similar to a nappy??? they grip fairly well on the bra (some minimal movement)

You must have missed the thread I posted about looking for reasonably priced breast pads (preferably hemp). That is exactly what I am looking for - if you could post the links up that would be great!;)

All the stores I seem to visit have them ridiculously overpriced:p

sorry hon ... yes .. I missed it.. oops... sometimes I have just WAY to much to read ..

the one that I bought mine off .. and recommend .. are by Bek at pookey pockets ..

ITs (suprise suprise) www.pookeypockets.com

BUT .. I dont think she has them actually listed as a product ... she is a brissie mum .. and it is only through the nappy meets that I know she makes them .. I think they are $4 a pair??? (I only ever needed three pairs .. but I didn't leak HEAPS- it was more for confidence ...)

might be TMI .. but Bek herself .. umm leaks lots .. lol .. so I never leaked through one of hers... (you could check with tickle and seekrit (aka leaky boobs  ).. they have both tested the product too ... not sure how they went )

I would just email her and (mention where you heard them from :p ) - ask how many she has ...

I'm hoping to organise a nappy meet near me soon .. so let me know - I'll get off my butt and do that .. - I might even save you postage :D
