I am confused.... Hoping someone can she some light...
If an amnio can't be done until 15 wks and it takes 3 wks to get results, saying there are major problems and you make the difficult decision to terminate... isn't a termination at 18 wks too far along to be OK  I understood terminations past 18wks are illegal ????

Law differs from state to state. I might be wrong but I think its still legal to abort for medical reasons till 22 (24?) weeks. I think it is at this age because soon after, babies can technically survive. But I might be completely wrong.

Im assuming you are referring to the legalities of an abortion at that stage?
Im not exactly sure but I do know that late term abortions are allowed for medical reasons, it is actually an induction of labour at that late stage, rather than an abortion in the way you may be thinking, and the child is born in the usual way.

This happened to a friend of mine recently. She wasnt realy given any option as the baby had huge deformities.
They dont call it a termination as the women is induced and goes into labour giving birth to her baby and they usually document this as a live birth and a death.
So my friend was given a birth certificate and a death certificate etc

unfortunately not all late term terminations involve induction of labour:(

This is what happened to a friend of mine, for medical reasons she was induced at 20 weeks and had her baby, the baby breathed for a few minutes which was good cause it gave a little time for Mum & Dad to say "I love you". :crying: :crying: It was very hard, but now looking back they were grateful for those few minutes that they had.

In NSW it is legal to terminate a pregnancy up to 20 weeks, when you have an amnio you can have fast track DNA done and the results for the main chromosonal abnormalities and cystic fibrosis will be back within 48hrs

:crying: thats so sad. im glad they found a positive though. i think all babies delivered deserve a birth certificate and funeral. isnt that only fair?!?
in queensland it is legal to have a termination up untill 22wks, after 16wks it is done by induction where the woman has to give birth, if it is done after 20wks that baby has to be registered, has a birth and death cert and also has to either be burried or cremated, before 20 this is not necessary for some reason, also a termination after 12 wks has to be for medical reasons, they will not do it if baby is perfectly fine,

When I needed to have my amnio donethey told me the earliest you can have one is 13 weeks. They said that the results would take 2 weeks to com but I got mine back in 1 week and 2 days. About terminating they also said that it can be done at any stage but the hospital would prefer not to after the 20th week, not sure why

I was told that after anm amnio, if the results are not good then they fast track it so appropriate action can be taken. If all is ok, it can take up to 3 weeks for results, so "no news is good news"
Also, they said that a termination can be done up to 20 weeks (I am in VIC) anything beyond that is considered a birth and a birth and death cert are issued.
I really hope you don't have to go down this path though :fingerscrossed:

Luckytiger is right. An amnio needs to be done between 12 and 13 weeks. 15 weeks is far too late, and the sac of fluid between the crown and rump of the baby is reducing too much for a needle to be able to extract any amniotic fluid at all...
Best Wishes :hugs:

Just a word of warning that this doesn't seem to fit with the information most of us are given by our health practitioners, so saying that 15 weeks is far too late may not be completely accurate.

I know this is horrible to think about, but if you have to have a termination at say 22 weeks, what if the baby is born alive?

The time frame is 14-16wks.
Always remember there is always a chance that the test could be wrong either way.
Ive had friends who have tested positive for a downs child & then produced a non- downs child & vice versa.
It will always be up to you as the parents to decide what you wish to do this isnt the usual termination type deal where there are time limits etc but of course they wont let you change your mind come 30wks either.
Good luck with your decision.
chubbybubby - The baby when born is left with its parents usually then allowed to pass away without resuscitation or intervention.

I am 22 weeks along and this would be so awful, I don't even want to think about it :crying:
Let's hope everything works out for the best with the OP :hugs:

Amniocentesis is 99.9% accurate for Downs Syndrome - here is some basic information from Monash: http://www.monashivf.edu.au/library/factsheets/amniocentesis.html

OK, I've been asked to set you all straight.
I am speaking from my own personal experience and what I went through.
I was actually just 21 weeks when I had my amnio, and I was at the cut off stage. I was then offered a termination and was told I had to make up my mind as they would not do it after 24 weeks. So the 13-15 wk cut off someone else mentioned is very inaccurate. This would apply for CVS which is a dofferent test, this is where they take some of the placenta tissues and test then, NOT the amniotic fluid.
I would suggest to anyone even remotely thinking about having a termination to look into what they actually do... [text removed by moderator]
But that's not the only thing we are talking about here.
Amnio is 99% accurate and I have known of 2 ppl who recieved the wrong results, one acted on the result and terminated a healthy baby, the other did not act on the results and went ahead to have a healthy baby without the condition that was stated in the results of the amnio.
This is what I know and what I have been through, so I know how it all works and have been told about all the gestational age limits on everything.
I suggest some do their research before jumping in.

The original poster in this thread was asking if it was illegal to terminate after 18wks or not, after 14 or 16wks a termination is done by induction, not by the usuall abortion techniques, you can legally ternimate a pregnancy between 12 and 22wks, but it has to go through 2 ob's and the head of the hospital or depertment, they are only done during this time if there is a medical reason with baby or if there is a risk to the mum,
chubbybubby if a baby is born between 20 and 24wks and is born alive just like allyoo said the baby is left with the parents to pass away in their arms,
with a baby born at 24wks there is a legality that the baby has to be resusatated which is why a termination in the second trimester is usually done before 22wks,

This thread has been moved to the new terminations section. Please note that this section has a zero tolerance policy with regard to unsupportive comments regarding terminations. This section is for those who might want more information about terminations or support for an experience that they have been through.
Unsupportive comments or attempts to start ethical discussions will be removed. Nobody undertakes or considers a termination lightly and the reasons behind it may be very personal and painful. This section is to allow these matters to be discussed in a non-jugdemental manner.
Graphical descriptions of medical procedures are not considered supportive.

HI
Just a quick note here, Im not sure if it is different, I am in SA.
I had my amnio done at almost 20 weeks, meaning I was to wait the 3 weeks for the results, I had a FYSH (sp?) also done which is basically a "mini" amnio, with results coming back in 48 hours, not 100% accurate, but almost the same, about 80, I think.
I had the councelling, and the decision was made, for a termination at 23 1/2 weeks, which thankfully we didnt need as he didnt have downs, he isnt perfect, but he is ok.
EVERYONE has to make the right decision for themselves, and their families, and I dont think anyone has the right to look down on someone because they arent equiped to have a disabled child. (The decision we made to terminate was extremely hard, I am pretty much against any form of termination, well I was until faced with it myself.)
Another note, we can also imagine what happens without being told in a graphic description.
