hi

My 13 month old seems to be having a reaction to raffertys garden's sweet potato and lamb. It says their ingredients are additive free. He rubs his eyes and gets a bit blotchy from all the rubbing and cries. I don't know if its because its his evening meal and its unrelated to the food or if its something in it.

The ingredients are pretty simple - 52.2% Vegetables (Sweet Potato, Pumpkin, Swede, Onions, Tomatoes), Cooking Water, 12% Tomato Puree, 9.5% Lamb, 2.4% Ground Rice, 1.2% Olive Oil, 0.5% Spring Onions, 0.1% Rosemary

I was thinking maybe the tomato but he eats baked beans fine. He has had a reaction to eggs but there are no eggs in this. He has been the same with some of the other flavours in the range but I have avoided them after the egg reaction... I have since found out the pasta ones don't have egg in them so are safe but I can't figure out what is making him yukky. DH has a salyclate intolerance which means he can't eat tomatoes, its the only possible connection I can make.

Any ideas?

thanks so much
Liz

btw, we are STILL waiting for a SPT

My DD also rubs her eyes alot and gets blotchy at dinner time. I have always put it down to tiredness as she has no other problems and does this with any food she is served for dinner

Give it a break for at least 4 days then try it again to see if he has the same reaction. Tomato seems obvious but I'd be suspicious of the onions in it too. He might just not like how they taste/react/repeat on him.

My DS gets tired and cranky at dinner time and rubs his eyes and cries throughout his whole dinner sometimes even though he is hungry and he is normally fine once I get him out of his highchair and let him crawl around again... I just put it down to tiredness, maybe try him on the same meal for lunch and see if there is a reaction then?? Goodluck xx

It could be the rice, or it could be a cross-contaminent? Does it say anything on the package about 'may contain traces of' anything?

my guess would definitely be the tomatoes .. Jack had a pretty definite reaction to tomatoes when I introduced them to him (he has no allergies to them now .. but still hates them .. lol)

Do you only ever offer that food to him at night?? if you want to rule the tiredness out, perhaps offer it at lunch (assuming that you dont think the reaction could be worse if he is exposed to it again) ...

good luck - I was always reluctant to introduce new foods on the basis of a reaction (I didn't introduce strawberries or citrus for AGES .. :hugs:)

thank girls. i gave it to him again at lunch and had the same reaction.

if he can eat baked beans does that count as an ok on tomatoes?

nothing on the pack about traces of anything Tam :(

im keeping a food diary now to try and get to the bottom of it

I'm with tam on this one, cross contamination.
It's sounding like that to me. A friends daughter is allergic to eggs and she has had a reaction to a piece of fruit that was cut with a knife that was used to crack an egg... That's how sensitive they can be. If the manufacturer has any products with eggs in their range it is quite likely that other products can be contaminated.
It should say on the back though so that's unusual.
Tomatoes is the other obvious one but you would think baked beans would elicit the same reaction ..
