View Full Version : tongue tie
hi all, i had my little one on the 11th of september and he is beautiful!! we are home from hospital and getting used to each other.....i'm breast feeding...not sure if i'm doing it right who knows?? but i seem to be feeding him all day. he falls asleep at the boob quite a bit but i guess he's only just over a week old. anyway, he does have a little tongue tie. i've been told "oh yes, get it snipped" and "oh don't worry about it" by midwives, doctor and the paediatrician (wow...spelling...)it doesn't seem to stop him feeding (he's putting on weight and wee-ing and poo-ing all day long).....just interested to know if anyone else has come across this and what did you do????
also - is their poo supposed to be a yellowy colour and very runny at this stage????

My son was born tongue tied but it was severe-the skin came from underneath, over the tip of the tongue and the poor thing could not even move it. He lost weight severely so we had to get it snipped.
I know some poeple that had a child whos tongue was tied but not severe-they didnt get it snipped and then when he was older and started talking he began to have problems so they had to get it done later in life (he developed a speech impediment which embarrassed him and he wouldnt talk).
Brodie didnt get snipped till he was 3 weeks old and it wasnt that bad. The paediatrician met us at the hospital. DH and i went away (because i was a bit shakey) and the nurse held him. 2 seconds later it was over. We just put bonjella on it (yes i know it says not before 4 months but the pediatrician reccommended it and said its safe, they use it for all tongue tie snips no matter the age) and kenalogue in oral base (you may need a script)..........
I guess its up to you if you dont think its bad. Brodies was. But then consider the future if the "tied part" doesnt relax sufficiently and they develop speech problems. The older they get the more it will hurt to get the tongue tie snipped and the longer it will take to heal.
Goodluck with your decision!

I don't know about tongue-tie, but if it was serious I'm sure the doctors would have told you. If it isn't affecting his feeding then I wouldn't worry about it too much. Wait and see what the Paed & Dr says.
As for the poo... yes! Totally, Utterly Normal
This is going to sound odd, but enjoy the yellow poo while it lasts... cos food poo is sooooo much worse!

DS has a mild tongue tie which i never bothered to snip. It took us 4 months to get the latch perfect, using nipple shields in the process. He feeds wonderfully now.

DS had mild tounge tie- it certainly never needed snipping because, like your DS, he was gaining weight and doing all the normal things. I'd just like to add that it has NEVER held him back at all when it comes to eating and talking. I can't shut him up!! (nor do I want to!). I wouldn't stress, really I wouldn't. You son is perfect the way he is!

dd had a small tongue-tie. we didn't worry about it and when she was about 4 months she was laying on her tummy and chewing on a bikky and broke it herself when she decided to headbutt the floor. it bled for a few minutes and then no problem. we did have a few tears but was alright after a cuddle. she did feed easier afterwards .

Gee i wish my drs was forth coming. I never got told how serious my son was!!!!
As for the talking part i know some kids have no probs i was just saying i knew one that had mild tongue tie who did have a problem so its something to consider but certainly not something to worry about!!!!!! I am sure lots of kids never have a problem
My ds has a severe tongue tie as do I.
My ds wasn't diagnosed until he was 18 months old (after being unable to breastfeed and it never being picked up!) and we have been told to wait until he was older.
He didn't start talking until he was over 2yo and was very unclear ... I took him to a speech therapist, but over the 2 appointments his speech got to a point where it was better than most his age, so the tongue tie wasn't effecting him that way.
It is, however effecting him with eating. He is unable to move food around his mouth properly for chewing and as a result can have a mouthful in his mouth up to an hour after he put it in which is a choking hazard! We now have to go through specialist care to get it snipped. Because he isn't a newborn any more, they will have to put him under general anaesthetic to do it.
Myself, well, I have trouble saying some words (I "trip" over my tongue) and I cannot lick icecreams without it being painful. Other than that, I am fine ... it would just be great to be able to stick my tongue out at dh occasionally! If I had the choice, I would have mine snipped too!

DSS had tongue tie requiring it to be snipped not long after birth
DD had tongue tie, unnoticed at birth, caused lots of feeding problems and was snipped at 5 weeks
Its simple, quick and easy to get it snipped.. I would get it done again no hesitations as they can develop speech problems later on if its not snipped and its harder to snip it when they are older. It can also continue to cause feeding problems and for what? DD didnt cry, didnt bleed... was just annoyed at having the paeds fingers in her mouth lol Im so glad we got it done!
