Hi all
Can anyone offer some help/advice? My bub is 9 1/2 weeks old. He loves sleeping on his tummy, will immediately go to sleep with no crying, and absolutely HATES sleeping on his back in his cot...he will be unsettled for 1 1/2 hours. He co sleeps & has just started to be too disruptive at night, but we are too worried about SIDS to put him on his tummy in his cot at night. He sleeps in his cot during the day. I am getting a bit desperate after a shocking night's sleep last night!! Any ideas about how to get him sleeping reliably on his back? It is such a shame, as on his tummy he will sleep happily for 3 hours, with no tears or fuss :(
Hello
I have the same problem with my daughter who is 3 months - she hates sleeping on her back. I have now started putting her on her side to drift off and then I will roll her onto her back when she's asleep. Have you tried side sleeping?
Like you, I am too concerned about SIDS to allow her to tum sleep - I guess the way I look at it is that I would rather have no sleep than put her at risk and potentially put myself in a position where I would never ever forgive myself, but that is just how I feel, you have to do what works for you.
Sorry I can't help more
Hi there!
There was a very similar thread to your not so long ago -that had some good advice you might like to have a look at
http://www.bubhub.com.au/community/forums/showthread.php?t=2601&highlight=sleeping+stomach
if this link does not work - go to the search bar and type in "sleeping on stomach" and you will find it.
best of luck :)
hi,
i had the same thing with my bub. i bought those safe and sound bumpers from Target (i think they are $20 - $30). I don't know if you have seen them - mine is yellow and it is two cylindrical bumpers joined together with a piece of cloth. You put your bub in the middle and adjust the bumper with the velco to fit them in snugly. I bought one as ds also went to sleep well on his side and the bumpers held him in place. Have you tried your baby on the side? Might be a compromise? ;) I have found that once my ds got to about 6 months old he was able to flip himself back onto his stomach anyway but i am less worried about it now as he is a bit older.

Thanks guys! I did have a look at that other thread, and I will check out those sleeping aids. I am trying to get him to side sleep. And he was really good last night, first night out of our bed, he woke once at 10.30 & only took 15 mins to settle, then his usual 2am feed, then he slept on his back till 6am! I used a technique by Tizzie Hall, from a magazine article (not control crying), and so far, so good! :) :)
Has anyone heard of/used those matress monitors that set an alarm off if bub stops breathing? I agree that they are too precious to risk SIDS just for a bit of sleep, but wondered if the alarm works?

We have an Angelcare monitor which has pads taht you put under the mattress that senses movement - even babies breathing. It works well for us, except when i forget to turn it off and get MJ up only to have to go back in and turn it off cause the alarm is going off
We think it was $200 well spent

My baby is 5.5 months old and just loves sleeping on her stomach. After she falls asleep often I will roll her over, but this is very risky - sometimes she wakes up and it takes ages to resettle her..... I saw my maternal health nurse today who recommended continuining rolling her over.
I also have an angelcare monitor - these are fantastic!! It gives me some reassurance that if she rolls without me knowing, we have a safeguard.
good luck

Hi there,
i have the same problem with my 7 1/2 mth old son. He has slept on his tummy since he was 4 weeks old. This was the only way he would sleep because on his back he would just startle himself and wake after 5 mins screaming.
At first i was also worried about SIDS but then i went out and bought the angle care movement monitor and it was the best $200 i've ever spent. Since then i have been at ease with him sleeping on his tummy and have been able to sleep myself without worriyng. My son wont even sleep on his back in the pram so i have to roll him over onto his tummy. It looks quiet funny with his feet sticking out the wrong way!
I think what ever works well for your child, if he is a tummy sleeper then he will find it hard sleep properly on his back to get a good nights sleep. If i was u though, i would definately invest in a movement monitor for peace of mind.
Good luck

Some excellent news...
Toby has started sleeping though the night on his back (from 9.30pm-6am). I found wrapping helped. The sleep training I did during the day has also helped, he had his longest ever back sleep yesterday of 2.5 hours. I was fully prepared to get an angelcare monitor too, we may still do if the back sleeping goes bad in the future! He is great at home in his own cot now, but we still have to tummy sleep when we go out during the day. Guess we can live with that though!! Thank you everyone for your good ideas & help. :D
