Just wandering what age your child was when they didn't want to sleep during the day.My ds is nearly 3 and sometimes sleeps for an hour but plays up at night time when it's time for bed.but on the other hand, if he doesn't have a sleep he becomes whingy and naughty. i have tried quiet time in his room, but he pulls everything out of the draws and cupboard :banghead: . any ideas?

my daughter doesnt sleep at all at home, only at night, at daycare she sleeps, but at home she wont, and she stopped sleeping when she was around 3, shes now 3 1/2. normally when its time to go to bed shell sleep straight away. on my days off from work i tryed to tire her out, by asking her help with the house work, i give her things to do which might encourage her to sleep. now my dd is getting older she says she doesnt have to sleep and wants to do everything, touch everything, jump on everything etc etc.

All children are different. My girl had enough of naps at 18 months.
My boy is 3 and occassionally has naps (though he has health probs)
It does depend how much sleep get at night. My girl was happy with 12-13 hrs. My boy gets less so has a nap when he needs it.

Does he sleep okay during the night?

Jacob was still sleeping 3-4hrs a day until he started school at almost 5.5yrs old. Brooke was still sleeping 17hrs in every 24 when she started school at 5.
Matthew was 2 in May and will sleep anywhere from 3-5 hours each day, then he is in bed for the night by 6:30.

Does he have a night time routine?

Hi, I was just wondering angel_kisses how did your kids cope when they went to school and couldn't have that much sleep? My DS is 5 months and sleeps only 12-14 hrs in 24 hrs (3 day sleeps, a 40min, a 2-2.5hr and a 1hr20mins).

They were grouchy bums by the time they got home, but refused to have a nap. After the first term it wasn't so bad.

DS stopped daytime naps around age 2.5. I have a friend who's 4.5 yr old still has naps though. Every kid is different.

It does sound like your child is in the "transition" stage though. That no-mans-land between daytime naps and no daytime naps. you'll find there will be a period of time where you're in a lose-lose situation. If they nap, they're too awake for their normal bedtime so that routine goes out the window. If they don't nap they become Mr/Miss Cranky Pants cos they're so tired by late afternoon.

I would be inclined to keep your DS up during the day and maybe bring bedtime forward a little until things settle down. Another thing you could try is perhaps let him have a nap every 2nd or 3rd day, just to avoid the snowball effect of overtiredness.

It is a rough phase, but you'll get through it. All you can do is try to keep your sanity and know that it will pass!

My DD stopped having day naps around 20 months. She was never a big sleeper even as a new born baby she would be awake for hours and hours. Now she is 2 and she normally goes to bed at 7pm and sleeps until 8am. If by the off chance she has a nap (1 hour at the most) she will not go to sleep until 10pm.

DS is 3y10m and still naps for 3-5 hrs every afternoon when we are home, if we are out he can just manage to not have one but HAS to have one the next day or just wouldnt cope. He becomes very stroppy when he doesnt get a nap and his behaviour goes down the drain in a matter of minutes when it hits but he is really good at home, he tells us its nap time usually and goes and puts himself to bed and waits for me to come tuck him in!

DD is only 15 months but she still needs 2 naps a day, in the morning for around 2 hours and in the afternoon for about 3hrs and she sleeps for 12-14 hrs at night. She can skip the morning nap OCCASIONALLY but cant skip the arvo nap! :)

My dd is much younger than you guys are talking about (14 months) so still on two daytime naps, plus 12 hours at night, but one thing I have noticed is how crucial sticking to a routine is. Sometimes, you'd swear she isn't even vaguely tired, no signs at all, but because it's time to sleep, she goes straight down.

She wakes at 7am, naps 9.30am-11am, lunch 12-12.30, naps 2.30-4pm, and then dinner at 5-5.30pm. Bath at 6.30, milk, story and cuddle, the bed no later than 7.15pm (supposedly 7, but...)

If I get OUT of that routine, she protests, and will often refuse to take a morning nap at 10am or afternoon at 3pm. She can actually go without one of them if she has to, but she definitely needs one during the day.

She sleeps straight through most nights, and I have read that one of the problems with kids not sleeping through is that they might not be getting enough sleep during the day. (Don't ask me how THAT works, but I have read it somewhere.)

Good luck with it all

Jaq

my ds1 is 16.5 months old and he has 2 naps a day, one in the morning if he got up extra early (ussually is up at 5:50am) and one around lunchtime or in the afternoon. daycare days he sometimes has a nap when he comes home. he sleeps about 11-12 hours a night. he used to have more naps but he has got rid of them all pretty much and wants to get rid of the ones that are left lol

DS1 was weaned off them slowly, you see his preschool doesn't have sleeping facilities, so on Monday's he didn't have a sleep, then when he gave up his dummy (a couple of months after he turned 3 - which he had a bedtime only) he also gave up the day sleeps.
He know's that when his younger brother is sleeping it is quiet time - that means watching a DVD, reading a book (or some other quiet activity) or playing a computer (educational) game (yes, I have some competition for the computer now!!:D )
