Hi there,

I am 27 weeks pregnant (with our 1st child :) We are currently living in West Beach so I have been going to Queen Elizabeth, and scheduled to got to Women and Children's hospital.

We are going to be moving soon to Seaford Rise and am not sure whether I should try and transfer to Flinders. We are new to Adelaide, so it would be nice to meet people near where we will be living, but have been really happy with the midwives at Queen Elizabeth. (we have not been for the ante-natal classes yet)

Does anyone have any vews on transferring late in pregnancy and what Flinders clinic is like?

Take care
Dalene

I had my DD at flinders and they were great. I'm pregnant with #2 and will be going to flinders again. I am a high risk pregnancy and the care so far has been fabulous.

Hi, I'm booked in at Flinders Private but have had a fair bit of experience with FMC as i work as an ambo, and have taken many women in labour through to hospital and have never had any issues with the staff or facilities at Flinders in labour and delivery. Have also had a lot of friends deliver there and they have had no major problems, like most hospitals though it often comes down to the staff that happen to be rostered on the day that you are there. The labour and deliver ward at Flinders is brand new and the rooms in the birthing centre are massive!

If i was living in Seaford i wouldn't even consider travelling all the way to WCH when i was in labor unless i had a specific medical reason that could only be dealt with at the kids. It's a heck of a long drive when you are uncomfortable in labor and with your first child you just don't know how quick it's going to come and the last thing you want is to deliver on the back seat of your car parked on the side of the road somewhere between Seaford and North Adelaide!!! The other thing to consider is if in the unfortunate (and hopefully very unlikely) circumstance where you need to get to a hospital urgently for either your or bubs, Flinders is obviously the closest maternity hospital and i personally would feel much more comfortable in that situation to be going to a hospital where they already had all my medical and pregnancy records easily accessible.

Hope this helps your decision, I'm sure if you speak to the midwives at the QEH they could offer you some advice on what would be best for you and your baby.

Good luck

Hi,

Thank you all for the feedback. I go for my 1st appointment at Flinders in 2 weeks and the transfer will be finalised then.

I feel relieved as it is our 1st baby would rather have peace of mind and know that we would be closer!

Really appreciate the feedback!

Just on a side note i have heard if you are booked in at FMC to have bubs you can actually do your middy appointments at noarlunga hospital which is closer, not as busy and free parking

Hi there
The midwives at Naorlunga are really lovely (particularly Narelle). See if you can book in on a tuesday evening or a friday.
As a general rule, the team at FMC is great, particularly if you have a student midwife (not that Im at all biased) to help you through your journey
Blessings to you and your bump

Alexwp is the best student midwife...

I found flinders great! Moved from ACT to SA bout 3-4 mths ago and compared to Canberra hospital it's so much more thorough and efficient!!

Have had both my children at flinders, and pregnant with a 3rd. The labour and delivery has all been done up now. I had good experiences both times. Seaford is a lovely area, and can take the express way all the way to flinders incase things go quickly! Goodluck. Think you made a good choice.

Seaford Rise is a gorgeous area :)
I had my previous births at W&C so now living up this way i have to go to flinders which is rather scary for me so i know the feeling of moving to a different hospital and not knowing what its like.
