Is it possible does anyone know to get a healthcare card for ds who is asthmatic. He has been on preventative medication for over a year now, he is 2 and at $34 a month on top of my asthma meds its getting really hard. I have tried doing searches online but i seem to be going around in circles
Thanks

Unfortunately no.
Health care card is based on your income.

If your approved for a carers allowance you get a health care card..... but I doubt you would get it for asthma. My advice come July 1 ask your pharmacist for a prescription record form and if you exceed it you can get cheaper prescriptions

Unless your income is low, only if he is bad enough to qualify for carer allowance.
DD1 does, and it is truly a blessing with the amount of asthma meds she goes through, but she has other issues as well, and it is those that actually qualify her.

snap!
Yes and no. You can try to get one by putting in a claim for Carers Allowance. Some people get just a healthcare card for their child.
Or if you income is under $840 a week (it's around that amount) you can get a low income healthcare card.

You won't get a carer allowance for a child with asthma unfortunately.
What a bugger. Is this for the Singulair 3ofthem???
I'm sorry it's all adding up:hugs:

Sorry CJ, well if i'm wrong- brilliant! You have nothing to lose by giving it a go! I was only speaking from the perspective of having had to jump through hoops to get the allowance for my Ds with ASD- the criteria is strict, i even know of kids with autism who have been turned down.
As i said though, worth a shot:)
That's it MyFourCubs It's worth a try.
What do you have to lose Op, some time from doing the paper work.
My friend got the healthcare card about 3 months ago. Thats all she wanted, didn't care about the money.

Thanks for the replys. No I don't want any money, I just want the healthcare card to relieve a bit of financial pressures with 2 of us asthmatics it really adds up. Today with only 2 preventers not with any relievers it was $70. Ds2 has been of his meds for a couple of weeks and he is a wheezy mass of bones at the moment, so he really needs them. We earn just over the cut off for the low income so I can't get it that way. On the up side he won't drink neocte anymore so I save $35 there :)

Ok you need to apply for carer allowance child and indicate on the medical report health care card only, asthma unfortunately does not meet the payment criteria although prior July 1 it did, but you can get a HCC. The whole process works if scoring, as Faschia developed this according to your dr's report and your answers, unfortunately it is quite difficult but has been designed as such due to alot of individuals whom really don't provide care. It's sad for any one person who is genuine and it has made it harder for these groups also. For you to meet HCC eligibility the doctor must indicate you provide more than 14 hrs of care per week for the medical condition etc.
Give them a call and claim you have nothing to loose! And asthma meds are ridiculously priced especially as it is such a common medical condition these days!

How does this work for adults? I lost my HCC and would love to get it back just so i can get medications. I pay over $100 a month in medication that i can't live without.

No idea, at a guess I'd say try to apply for the card only.
I'm going to try again for T, A & me.

Argh! I swear my DH must be suffering baby brain with my pregnancy lol I will send him to see the pharmacist this arvo!

I've never been offered one and DH, DS and myself are all asthmatics on preventers. DS actually uses a steriod for asthma related allergies AND the preventer daily and we are regularly using atrovent combined with ventolin through the nebuliser for him- so as you can imagine our pharmacy bills are phenominal. Don't get me wrong it would be nice to reduce our medical bills with the GP (who only bulk bills healthcare card holders) and give us reduced fees at the paediatricians! I would easily spend $1500 a year at the paeds (before rebates), gawd knows how much at the GPs, then there is the travel to the high risk clinic at Sydney Childens plus parking (:freakingout: don't get me started on that particularly as I don't like not parking in the station when pregnant!)
I was actually going to ask DH about whether we can get a bigger metered dosage of the preventer as DS takes 500mg of flixotide daily which is 4 puffs and the spray thingo only contains 120 puffs- where as the ventolin puffers that they hand out for under $5 contain 200  Mind you it was worse when we had to keep an active supply of two preventers (one for croup treatment and a different one we were trying for asthma) PLUS the sterioid
Surely there has to be a more cost efficient way

we are a single income family with dh earnings at $80,000+ and for just our son to get a hc card for is eczema our dr had to sign a form and the criteria for his condition to be eligable for the card was he had to at one stage been hospitalised for 5 days with his eczema but that never happened so he could not get it, we can sometimes pay $60- $80 at a time on scripts if he has a bad outbreak. Its strange cause he was bad enough to be referred to sydney children hospital to see a pediatric dermatologist though, lucky for us it is very good now and that financially we do pretty well.

Sorry I missed this. 500mg is the highest concentration of flixotide that you can buy under the PBS. I've also since checked with the PBS and 120 MDI is the maximum available for flixotide, sadly.
