Hi

Ds is nearly 12 months old, and I notice around 5.30pm he had a temp. It was 38.2. I gave him panadol immediately. Shortly after it was bath time so I gave him a lukewarm bath, and once out he go the shivers.

He seems happy enough, and has gone about his day as normal, a bit grumpy, and a bit off his solids, which is not unusual for him.

After his bath he drank all but 20 mls of his bottle and shortly after finishing put himself to sleep in his daddy's arms. he has been done for around 2 hours with the odd moan and groan now and then. His temp was still 38.0 when I took it 5 mins ago. He is waering a tracksiut like material pants with feet and top, and a light singlet.

Have rang 13HEALTH and they just aid take him to the dr in the morning.

What do I do in the mean time. He has never has a temp this high before. What do I do?????????????????????????????????????

Just keep checking on him that his temp doesn't go up anymore. And give him panadol again when he is able to. Sponge him down if he gets hot or a bath helps aswell.

:hugs:

:hugs: its always hard when they are sick. Put him in a siglet and nappy, light sponge with a fashwasher to keep him cool. And if you are ever worried take him to emergency! Maybe even some nurofen. Hope he gets better soon.

Hi bpato,

Firstly, try not to worry too much. Most high temps are easily bought down by dosing with paracetamol every fours hours with NO MORE than 4 doses in a 24 hour period. You can alternate or use together, paracetamol with ibuprofen preparations such as Nurofen. Nurofen is NO MORE than 1200mg in 24 hour period.

Keep him cool but not cold and offer him plenty to drink. If the temp rises above 41deg, please take him to the hospital.

38 degrees is high, but it's not "off the charts" The other ladies have given great advice - keep him cool, offer fluids, 4 hourly panadol...cuddles work as well. If it get's above 41 as mel said, take him to hospy.
I hope he's feeling much better soon.

This is going to sound a bit mean, but if he doesn't wake up before you go to bed, wake him just enough to give him another dose of panadol. At least then you can go to bed knowing that the panadol will keep his temp down.
I do this with DD, and did with DS too. Both my kids get temps that go over 40 very quickly if they get an ear infection...DS had one that was 42.4 (might have gone higher but we put him in a cool bath)...it also sometimes takes 2 doses of panadol to get their temps to fall, the first dose just stops it rising for a few hours til they can have the next dose.

The fact that he is mostly happy, and still eating & drinking close to normal ammounts is a good sign...sounds to me like an ear infection :fingerscrossed: it's not tho. My DD is on her 3rd ear infection, she's 10mths, we are back to the drs tomorrow to see if it's clearing up.

Hope it's nothing serious :)

best thing to get the temp under control is to give 1 dose of panadol then in 30 mins check the temp if it is still up or not down enough give a dose of nurofen then repeat the panadol at 4 hour intervals from the first panadol dose then do the same with the nurofen it is perfectly safe to "double dose" fro 24 to 36 hours after theat if it hasnt come down go to the hospital or dr as there is an underlying problem

Sounds like you've got some great advice! Don't you just love the bubhub??

One thing that I would add is that if at ANY time something doesn't feel right to you, that you pack up bub and head to the emergency room anyway. Mummies always know  . Besides which, it will save you hours of worrying, and no sleep. Bubba needs you, especially when sick. Take care of yourself so you can take care of him.

:hugs: that you'll all feel better soon. I hope you have a good night and get at least a little sleep.

I assume you mean giving BOTH nurofen and panadol by "double dosing" - and NOT giving double doses of either med? Just getting clarification...cause I'm sure this is what you are saying.

Cheers

yes say for example you give panadol at 4pm then at 4.30 you give the nurofen then four hours from 4 pm give more panadol and then 4 hours from 4.30 give more nurofen continue this until temps have subsided or the 36 hours is up

Yes, I agree that dosing neurofen and panadol at the same time is okay - they are completely different medications, and can be safely given at the same time. But be aware, as Mel posted, that neurofen should only be given 6 hourly, with no more than 4 doses per 24 hour period - unlike panadol, which can be given 4 hourly with no more than 4 doses in a 24 hour period.

Also be aware that neurofen is quite abrasive to the stomache lining, and should ALWAYS be given on a full tummy to avoid irritations, tummy upsets, or even ulcers!

I think the best term meant is piggybacking
I agree with everyone here use your panadol & neurofen plus throw ( ok dont throw but ykwim ) into the bath as much as needed to keep his temp down.
I had to do this with Boof when his temp was 39 when he had roseola i found this was also the best way to keep his fluids up as he wouldnt drink but would suck his facewasher. So i had him in & out of the bath all day & nite.
Remember to keep the fluids up its a complete must !!!!
Oh & i also had a doctor who i saw orginally when the above happened to Boof & he bloomin well wanted me to double his dosage of neurofen
I did it once thinking to trust him then instinct made me realise what the hell am i doing ?!?!?!?!?!
So if a doctor isnt giving you the answers or your not happy with the diagnosis remember to seek a second opinion

I hope your little guy is ok :) About a month ago Kalani seemed a little off but was still happy and playing. I had a little rest with her and she woke up screaming unconsolably, I was in such a panic, Kalani felt so hot I checked her temp. It was 41.8 and called the ambulance straight away. (I thought it was meningitis) Got to the emergancy and Kalani's temp went back down thankfully, it was a virus and she was screaming because of the ear ache. I felt a little silly but the nurses reasured me that it's better to be safe than sorry, lol. (So glad it wasn't anything serious)!!!

Thank you all soooooooooooooooooooooooooo much for the advice. By the time we went to bed a 9.15pm his temp had come down to 36.9 which is normal for him. :yelclap:

We did however come out in a rash today. We've seen the doc who said not to worry to much about temps unless they go above 40.5 degees, and that the rash might be a reaction to his new reflux meds or there is a viral infection going round that is similar to chicken pox (which itself is going round), and being a teacher I would bring all this home to share with DS. the joys of the job really. hope fully it means in the long run he will have a fantastic immune system :fingerscrossed: . He has had no temp today which also make the Dr think that the rash isn't to serious.

Thanks again for all the advice I really appreciate it. I love bubhub in time of need, you are all soooooooooooooooo fantastic.

mumofprincess20 I thought it was meningitis
This was my first reaction when mum rang and told me about the rash. The Dr has given him the all clear though.

:hugs: and
