Hi guys, this is my first post here - although a frequent reader. I am also a very worried first time new mum who has had a very tough day!

Currently i am on antibiotics for mastitus. Lately DD has been a bit unsettled in the day times (fine at night) and has looked to be very windy and irritable. She also has diarorreah (sp) which i also have - but was warned by the doc this could happen. Today she has been the worse i have ever known her! She has been awake since 8.30 and has not settled once - and this is a 2 week old who normally does nothing but sleep and eat. She has ben kicking her legs, screaming, crying, trying to sleep - but then waking crying a few min after.....she is feeding well still - but not settling after a feed where she normally does. I am assuming that it is a big case of a bad tummy/wind - and was wondering if anyone knows whether the anitbiotics can cause some of these problems? DD never cried unless hungry or cold/hot - so it is so distressing to see her frantic and unable to settle. at first i was thinking that she wasn't settling after the first feed of the day as she is getting older and may want some "play time" now...but she is not content when awake and spends most of it thrashing about....She is so knackered - you can just tell. But an hour ago she feel asleep for the first time all day - but has not really settled and wakes up screaming. She has never screamed in the 2 weeks we have had her

Please tell me it may have something to do with the AB (or else i may be in trouble with a very windy, unsettled bubs).

Thank you

Hi,
What is the name of the antibiotic you have been started on?

staphylex 500 flucloxacillian - started them on thursday - DD has been a little unsettled for small periods of time since Friday - but today it has been truly horrible (well, to me as it is the first time that she has ever screamed and not settled - the entire day! scary for a 2 week old!)

Doc said that they are s"safe' to take during preg - but that bubs may get diarreah (sp) which she has def. got - including me!

RWH (http://www.rwh.org.au/rwhcpg/maternity.cfm?doc_id=4338) protocol. Your on he right one:thumbsup:

Sounds like its not the Antibiotics causing upset if you have been taking them for 5 days. Although it can cause diaorrhea ect but usually a bit quicker than that.

Hows the mastitis, is it settled down. Did you keep breastfeeding throughout?

Yep - i have been expressing and giving her EBM and my breast.....she loves the bottle though - so this may also be a cause of the wind. I sort of do hope that it is the ABs as i have been told that they can make bubs more windy - and i have def noticed a change with wind since Friday - the day after i started taking them. But today has been something else!

My answer is not really a breastfeeding based one, just an observation that with both of my daughters at about the 3 week mark I had a day of unexplained crying that lastest a whole day - something about them shifting to another stage of consciousness or something like that I read at the time. The good thing was that with both of them, after a day from hell, they woke the next day happy and back to normal, so fingers crossed it is the same for you. Remember - they don't have a 'routine' as such for another few months - everytime you think you have them sussed they change the rules - one of the joys of parenting!

On the breast feeding front I would say that given the antibiotics and wind issues, try and breastfeed her as much as possible and avoid the EBM - it will help with the mastitis and will reduce any wind from the bottle too, helping you to narrow down possible causes if she continues to be disrupted.
