Hi girls

Now I'm not an expert on this topic :shame: BUT I've started potty training my DD who is 17 months. All I did was bring out her potty in the living room where she plays and it just sits there. I know the times when she poops, (after every feed, yes, she poops 3 -4 times a day, hence why I'm keen on potty training :D ) so I started by asking her if she needs to poop (she knows what poop is) I put her on and wait a while....sometimes we get a poop sometimes no poop.... I've been doing this for about a week and Just last Friday after she had brekky, she went to her potty grabbed it looked at me and made a you know "pushing" noise. So put her on......and she pooped :smiliedance: She has been doing that since Friday. Everytime she poops or wees I give her 2 tiny teddies as an award :devil6:

Yes we have had a couple of times where she forgot and pooed in her nappy, but generally she is getting the picture. I used to try and put her on her toilet seat she has sitting on the big toilet, but she would never poop in there! I recon she is learning to poop in her potty through play too as she sometimes just sits on there and plays with her toys or puts winnie on there to do a "poop" hehehe

Hope this helped!Goodluck! Let us know what you decide to do!

It doesn't have to be "food". Maybe buy him a toy he can only play with if he does a poo or wee? Also, I'm using huggies "pull ups" at the moment and only dress DD in pants during the day which makes it really easy to pull down and up instead of constantly putting a nappy on and off. Once she gets better at pooping in her potty I will put her in thos training undies, so she understands she has wet herself.

Now this is pretty grose, but I show her her poop or wee when she is finished so she knows she needs to do them in the potty rather than her nappy. Now she even gets up on her own once she is done.

Remember too, every child is different and will train differently. You just have to be persistent and try a different technique if something is not working for you!

I was thinking of training my DD when she gets more closer to 2 . Ive found that thru my mates experiences when her DD was about 18 months, and when i used to visit her , some rrooms used to smell very funny, until we would find a little mess waiting for us around the corner on the floor...i dont think she had built a good relationship with the potty..her dd got the idea real well after her 2nd bday :)

I really believe that toilet training happens when 1. the child can tell you they need to go and can get there in time and 2. you are ready to commit to doing it ie ; not when another baby is about to come.
The only reason i started toilet training my first child ( at 19 months ) was because she refused to wear nappies during the day. It was poo first and then wee - i think she was dry during the day at around 2 and night 2 1/2 which is pretty early i think.
My second child ( boy , now 19 months ) also uses the potty in the morning after breakfast , before day sleep and before night time bath - often we get poo but i think that this is probably a lot to do with 'toilet timing ' . i really do not see any hurry as once you make the decision to really go ahead you have to drag the potty , pants, extra clothes etc everywhere you go.
There are some fantastic books out there on toilet training.

from what i read, physiologically a child can have control over their bowel movements around the age of 3. which to me means they can hold on at that age, doesn't mean that they are ready to start at that age or that they can't start earlier. i think if kids show signs of readiness, they shouldn't be held back because of their age.
i know a lot of mums who have put off toilet training for the warmer months to find that when the kid gets there they are no longer interested in toilet training and then it becomes a nightmare. i would say, don't push them too early and if they show signs of interest, let em have a go! nappies are expensive!

jess, i rewarded owen with a star on a chart. once he got 10 stars he got a matchbox car or something small. i try to stay away from food rewards. plus lots and lots of praise, they love that. for younger children who probably need more instant gratification, a stamp on the hand is also great. thats what the daycare ladies did with owen and he shows it off all day.

hope that helps.
