hi girls, just a quick?? question! My 12 month old has a reaction to eggs, I am still waiting for a phone call to have him booked in for a proper skinprick test...
Is it pretty much said that if he's allergic to eggs he's going to be allergic to peanuts? And does normal pasta usually contain egg? I bought some egg free pasta but I don't know if normal pasta would be ok anyway?
I am having trouble finding information wether I should not eat eggs myself while I am breastfeeding him. I did read that avoiding it in the earlier days of breastfeeding and pregnancy can help but my partner and myself are not highly allergenic people so I didn't think of it when I was pregnant.. I do have hayfever and he has mild salicylate intolerance but thats all.
thankyou so much! I am really panicking about this egg stuff. I gave him a little cut up cold sausage today and he had a reaction. I felt so bad and didn't think there would be any egg in it.. till I looked it up online tonight :( thankfully he only had a little bit.

Egg allergy is more related to asthma and eczema instead of nuts. I am a little suprised that there was egg in a sausage though. It is not an issue we have come across and my DS who is 4.5 in anaphylactic! Pasta can be a tough one. If it has egg in it, it should say so in the ingredient listing.
Meanwhile I wouldn't avoid it in pregnancy. Having said that though we have been entirely egg free for 4 years now and DS' allergy is so horrid that we replaced all our cookware, cutlery and dinnerset- so I have been egg free during this pregnancy

thanks missie mack, I found it as an ingredient on the allergyinfo website. it wasn't listed on the ingredients on the sausages (woolies brand)... maybe it was something else! :(
how did you find your son was anaphlatic? how scary for you. do you give him normal pasta?

He sadly went into shock. His lips swelled bigger than my DHs thumb, his tongue became massive and he couldn't breathe. It was very scary! I haven't had too much prob with dried pasta but never touch fresh pasta or pasta in restaurants. His allergy isn't quite as bad as he has gotten older. He is a classic atopic kid who has the eczema and asthma to match. But untraditionally he is more allergic to the yoke than the whites. There was a study about baked foods with eggs having an improved outcome, but no such luck for us. It has just become a type of normal to us now that day to day it doesn't worry us

ps love captain mack! watched it today
My almost 3 yr old DD was allegic to egg, dairy and soy, confirmed by SPT at 6 months. She has always had severe eczema from when she was just a newborn. I was advised to eliminate eggs from my diet while I continued to breastfeed her since she had a fairly significant reaction to the SPT. I was advised to avoid giving her any nuts or seafood until she was 2. At 2, she was retested and had grown out of the dairy and soy allergy. We introduced peanut butter then without problems. And then she had a reaction to macadamia nut, so when she had the SPT to have that one confirmed they retested the egg and she had outgrown it (at 2.5). Now we are avoiding all nuts (except peanuts, which I have been told to make sure she keeps eating so she doesn't develop an allergy) until she us retested at school age. We have an epipen for her.

Oh, and dried pasta from the supermarket is pretty much egg free. Just check the labels!

I was thinking about your sausage dilemma last night and wonder if perhaps the issue was cross contamination, either from your side or the butcher. Lots of butchers make products that are egg washed and it is plausible that it crossed over to her sausages either through gloves, benches etc The other thing to consider is your cooking utensils.
Hope you find an answer soon!
I am 31 years old and allergic to eggs, but have no other food allergies (nuts are fine). You will get used to having to check ingredients on packaging all the time, as some unlikely foods contain egg (beware of some cheeses such as swiss & some Parmesans). Most of your standard dried supermarket pasta (Durham Wheat) is egg free, fresh pasta is a no go zone (I never order pasta when dining out). Also when he gets older you'll have to be mindful of the way food is cooked when eating out, for example, I get a reaction if I eat a McDonalds Cheeseburger if it's served shortly after the breakfast menu ends, must be traces of egg around. Pizza used to seem pretty safe for me, but some gourmet pizza's have egg in the base.
I hope your son grows out of the allergy as he gets older. Unfortunately my sensitivity got worse the older I got, I assume because my exposure became less frequent. And regarding the sausage, I have had reactions to foods on rare occasions when I HAVE checked all the ingredients prior to eating it, which sucks (must have been some trace amount in the product).
